Chapter 2

The apartment Gabriel's team put me in didn't feel real. White walls. A view of the park I couldn't enjoy. A doorman who checked my ID even though he'd seen me walk in twenty minutes before.

I sat on the couch with my phone in my lap, and I watched Miles lie to eight million people.

He was on a different network this time. Softer lighting. A host who called him "brave" for coming on so soon after "such a difficult night." Miles wore gray instead of navy. Humbler, I guess. His eyes were wet before he even opened his mouth.

"I love her," he said. "That's the only thing I want people to understand. Sloane has been through so much. What happened last night — that wasn't her. That was trauma talking."

The host nodded like he'd said something profound.

"She's been under enormous strain," Miles went on. "Wedding planning, press attention, the anniversary of some very painful memories. I should have protected her from the spotlight. That's on me."

I made a sound. Not quite a laugh.

"He's good," Gabriel said from the doorway. I hadn't heard him come in.

"He's always been good," I said.

On the screen, the host asked if Miles was worried about me.

"Every hour," Miles said. "I just want her to come home so we can heal together."

I turned the phone face-down on the cushion. My hands weren't shaking anymore. That scared me more than the shaking had.

"There's more," Gabriel said. He held out his own phone, already open to Instagram.

Antonella's face filled the screen. No makeup, or the kind of no-makeup that takes forty minutes. She was crying, but carefully, the way you cry when you know where the camera is.

"I never wanted anyone to get hurt," she said, voice cracking on cue. "Sloane is a survivor. I consider her a sister in survival. What happened to her — nothing about that is a joke to me, and I'm heartbroken people think I'd use her pain."

The caption underneath had already gathered forty thousand likes. #StandWithAntonella. #SheWasWeaponized. My own hashtag was fighting for space, three lines below, half-drowned.

I set the phone down. "They're winning."

"They're winning tonight," Gabriel said. "That's different."

I looked up at him. He hadn't taken off his coat. He never seemed to fully arrive anywhere — always half out the door, already thinking about the next thing.

"Explain the difference to me," I said. "Because from where I'm sitting, it looks like the whole country believes I'm a fragile mess who got confused on live TV."

"Public opinion isn't evidence," Gabriel said. "It doesn't hold up under subpoena. Miles's tears do not appear in a courtroom exhibit list."

"But it matters. You know it matters."

"It matters to the narrative," he said. "It doesn't matter to the case I'm building."

He crossed the room and sat down across from me, opening a leather folder like he was about to hand me a menu instead of my own future.

"I filed for a restraining order against Miles this afternoon," he said. "You'll need to sign an affidavit. I've also subpoenaed the financial records for his foundation."

"Why the foundation?"

"Because I don't think it's a coincidence that a man who built his brand on 'rescuing' abuse survivors happens to have unrestricted access to grant money and zero outside audits." His voice stayed even, but something sharpened behind it. "I want to see every application he's filed in the last six years. I want to know if your story — anonymized or not — shows up in a funding request."

I felt something cold move through my chest. "You think he used me for money."

"I think a man like Miles doesn't do anything that doesn't serve him," Gabriel said. "I'd rather know for certain than assume."

I stared at the folder. At the tabs, color-coded, labeled in small, precise handwriting. Restraining Order. Foundation Records. Timeline — S.S. My whole life, sorted into exhibits.

"You could have just told me it's handled," I said. "Most people would."

"You're not most people's client." He slid the folder toward me, not away. "You're the only witness who actually knows what happened in that house. I'm not going to build a case around you without you in the room."

I opened the folder. Read the first page. My hands were steady now, and that steadiness felt like something I'd stolen back.

"The security detail downstairs," I said. "Is that necessary, or are you being careful?"

"Both," Gabriel said. "Miles is losing control of the narrative in real time. Men like him don't do well with that."

Outside, the city kept going — horns, a siren fading two blocks over, someone's laughter drifting up from the sidewalk. Ordinary sounds. I wasn't part of them tonight.

"He's going to come back at me," I said. Not a question.

"Yes," Gabriel said. No softening, no reassurance dressed up as comfort. Just the truth, laid flat on the table between us. "And when he does, I intend for us to already be three steps ahead of him."

I looked at the folder in my lap, at my own name typed neatly across the tab, and for the first time since I'd torn the earpiece from my ear, I let myself believe that maybe I wouldn't be the only one fighting.
