Chapter 3

Gabriel's check-ins used to take four minutes. I know because I counted, the first week, the way you count anything unfamiliar to see if it's safe. He'd knock, ask if the security detail had rotated on schedule, ask if I'd eaten, and leave before the door finished closing behind him.

By the second week, four minutes had become forty.

Tonight it's takeout — cartons of lo mein and orange chicken spread across my kitchen counter because neither of us wanted to sit at the small dining table like this was a meeting. He's not wearing his jacket. I've never seen him without it, and the sight of his rolled-up sleeves feels more intimate than it should.

"You're staring," he says, not looking up from the carton.

"You look different without the armor."

Something flickers at the corner of his mouth. Not quite a smile. "It's a blazer, Sloane. Not armor."

"Sure."

We eat in a silence that doesn't feel empty. Outside, the park lights have come on, gold smudges through the window glass. I ask him, because I want to know and because the quiet feels like it's asking me to fill it, "Why this kind of law? Survivor advocacy. You could do anything. You'd be good at anything."

He sets his fork down. Doesn't answer right away, and I recognize the pause — I've made that pause myself, a hundred times, deciding how much truth a person has earned.

"I had a sister," he says. "Younger. Rosalind. Everyone called her Ros."

Past tense. I don't say anything. I just wait, the way Diana waits with me.

"She was seeing someone in her twenties. He didn't hit her — not at first, not that I ever saw. He just... narrowed her. Slowly. Which friends she kept. What she wore. How she talked about herself." His jaw works. "I was drowning in my first cases back then. Eighty-hour weeks. She'd call, and I'd tell her I loved her, gotta run, and mean both halves of that sentence."

"Gabriel—"

"I thought it was just a bad relationship," he says, over me, gently but firmly, like he needs to finish now that he's started. "I thought she'd leave when she was ready. I didn't ask the right questions. I didn't ask any questions, really. And then one October morning my mother called me at six a.m., and I knew before she said a word."

The room goes very still. I don't reach for him. I've learned enough, these past weeks, to know that some grief doesn't want to be touched — it wants to be witnessed.

"I've spent twelve years asking myself what I would have seen if I'd been looking," he says. "So now I look. That's all this job is. Looking, when it's easier not to."

I think about all the times Miles told me his story — the foundation, the speeches, the way he always circled back to his own compassion like a man checking his reflection. Gabriel hasn't asked me to feel anything for him. He hasn't dressed his sister's death up as a lesson for me to learn. He just handed me something true and let it sit there, unclaimed.

"Thank you," I say, "for not making that a metaphor about me."

He looks at me then, really looks, and something passes between us that neither of us names.

His phone buzzes against the counter before either of us can decide what to do with the silence that follows. He glances at the screen, and I watch his whole posture change — the ease draining out of his shoulders, replaced by something coiled and careful.

"Nathan," he says, already standing. "He's been monitoring Miles's known contacts since the restraining order filed. There's a number that pinged three times tonight. Prepaid, no name attached, but the tower location puts it four blocks from Jeffrey Willis's house."

The fork in my hand goes very still. "You think they're talking."

"I think Miles doesn't lose gracefully," Gabriel says. "And I think Jeffrey has more to lose than you do if this case moves forward." He crouches slightly, meeting my eyes instead of standing over me. "I need you to hear this clearly, Sloane. If they're coordinating, the most likely play is a staged confrontation. Jeffrey shows up somewhere you'll be alone. Frightens you. And then Miles arrives right on time to save you from him."

My stomach drops, but not the way it used to — not the old drop of shame and dread. This one is colder. Sharper. Almost useful.

"So I let him play the hero," I say slowly, "and it goes on record."

"If it happens," Gabriel says, "you don't fight him off. You don't argue. You let your phone run and you let him talk." His eyes hold mine, steady in a way that isn't about comfort at all. "I need his own voice to bury him. Can you do that?"

I think of the girl who used to go quiet in that house, who learned to disappear before anyone could ask her to. And I think of the woman who ripped a wire out of her ear on live television because silence had stopped being survivable.

"Yes," I say. "I can do that."

Gabriel nods once, like the answer is exactly what he expected, and reaches for his jacket.
