Chapter 1

The studio lights are hot enough to make my palms sweat. I stand stage-left, hands ready, watching the host's mouth shape words I'll translate into signs no one in this audience needs. It's a prime-time talk show. The kind with a live band and a glittering Manhattan skyline backdrop. The kind where people come to sell books or cry about redemption.

I'm here because the production company booked me two weeks ago. Standard gig. Good pay. I didn't ask questions.

Miles sits center-stage in a tailored navy suit, one ankle crossed over his knee. Relaxed. Confident. The man I've watched charm donors and journalists for six years. Beside him, Antonella Green perches on the edge of her seat, hands folded in her lap like a schoolgirl. She's smaller in person than on screen. Her dress is cream-colored, modest. Calculated.

The host leans forward, her expression soft with practiced empathy. "So, Miles, you've been a vocal advocate for survivors of abuse for over a decade. Tonight, you're here to talk about healing. About second chances."

"That's right," Miles says. His voice is warm. Steady. The voice that once made me feel safe. "I think we're living in a time where we rush to judgment. We forget that people are complicated. That growth is possible."

I translate automatically. My hands move through the signs without thought.

Antonella nods, her eyes glistening. "I made mistakes," she says softly. "But I'm trying to learn. To be better."

The audience murmurs approval. A few people clap.

I keep my face neutral. I'm good at that.

The host shifts in her chair. "Miles, I know this is personal for you. You've spoken before about someone close to you who survived something unimaginable."

My hands slow.

"Yes." Miles's expression turns somber. He looks down, then back up at the camera. "Someone I love very deeply. She was abused as a child. For years. By someone who should have protected her."

The studio goes quiet.

"And she chose forgiveness," he continues. "Not because it was easy. But because holding onto that pain was destroying her. She taught me that healing isn't about revenge. It's about letting go."

My chest tightens.

He's talking about me.

He's talking about me on live television, and I didn't know. I didn't agree to this.

The host's eyes shine. "That's incredibly powerful, Miles. Is she here tonight?"

Miles turns. Looks directly at me.

"She is."

The camera swings. The red light locks onto my face.

I can't breathe.

"Sloane," Miles says, his voice gentle. Coaxing. "Would you come up here? Just for a moment?"

The audience applauds. Encouraging. Expectant.

I should move. I should smile and step forward and be the good, grateful girl he needs me to be. The girl who forgave. The girl who healed on schedule.

My feet don't move.

"Sloane," Miles says again. Firmer now. "I know this is hard. But if you can forgive, so can we all. That's the message we need right now."

Antonella is crying. Pretty, delicate tears that catch the light.

The host is nodding.

The camera is still on me.

And something inside me—something that's been silent for twenty years—finally breaks.

I reach up. Tear the earpiece out. Let it dangle from the cord.

Then I step forward.

Not to the chair beside Miles. To the camera.

I look directly into the lens.

"My name is Sloane Salazar," I say. My voice is steady. Clear. "And I didn't agree to this."

The studio goes dead silent.

"Miles Turner is my fiancé. He knows I was raped by my stepfather from the time I was nine until I was seventeen. He knows because I told him in private. Because I trusted him."

Miles stands. "Sloane—"

"He's using that now," I continue, louder, "to rehabilitate the reputation of an actress who slept her way into roles and got caught. He's asking me to perform forgiveness on national television so you'll all feel better about giving her a second chance."

Antonella's face crumples.

"I don't forgive my abuser," I say. "I didn't choose healing. I survived. And I'm not going to smile and pretend that's the same thing so Miles can look compassionate and Antonella can keep her career."

The host is frozen.

Miles moves toward me. "You're upset. Let's talk about this privately—"

"We're done talking," I say.

Then I walk off the stage.

Behind me, I hear the host stammer something. The band starts playing. Someone cuts to commercial.

I make it to the corridor before my legs start shaking.

Miles catches up thirty seconds later. His hand closes around my arm, tight enough to bruise.

"What the hell was that?" His voice is low. Furious. "Do you have any idea what you just did?"

I try to pull away. He doesn't let go.

"You destroyed everything," he hisses. "My reputation. Antonella's career. Our future. You're going to go back out there and apologize. You're going to fix this."

"Let go of me."

"You owe me—"

"Mr. Turner."

The voice is calm. Cold. Male.

Miles turns.

A man in a charcoal suit stands ten feet away, flanked by a younger woman in a blazer and two security guards. He's tall, dark-haired, maybe forty. His expression is unreadable.

"My name is Gabriel Hamilton," he says. "I'm an attorney. Ms. Salazar is now under the legal protection of my firm. Remove your hand."

Miles's grip tightens for one second. Then he lets go.

Gabriel steps forward. Positions himself between us.

"Ms. Salazar," he says quietly, "would you like to leave?"

I nod.

He gestures toward the exit. The security guards move with us. I don't look back.

In the car, I sit in the back seat, staring at my hands. They're still shaking.

Gabriel sits across from me, silent.

"How did you know?" I finally ask.

"I didn't," he says. "But I know Miles Turner's reputation. And I know what men like him do when they're desperate."

I close my eyes.

"You're safe now," he says.

I want to believe him.

But I can already feel my phone buzzing in my pocket. Notifications flooding in.

By morning, the clip will be everywhere.

And Miles will come for me again.
