After My Fiancé Rejected Me, His Uncle Claimed Me Chapter 1
At 11:42 PM, exactly ten hours before my Mate Ceremony, my golden retriever Barnaby stiffened beside my bed and let out a low, vibrating growl.
His golden ears were pinned flat. His hackles rose in a sharp ridge along his spine, his snout pointed directly toward the private east corridor that led to Callen’s wing.
I set down the silk veil I had been steaming. "Barnaby, quiet," I whispered.
He didn't back down. He gave a sharp, anxious whine and pawed at the door. I trusted Barnaby’s instincts more than any wolf in the Ironveil Pack. If he was bristling like that, something was wrong.
I slipped into the hallway barefoot. The stone floor was ice against my soles. The Ironveil pack house was usually silent at midnight, but as I crept closer to Callen’s suite, the air grew heavy.
Then the scent hit me. It slammed into my nose like a physical blow.
Callen’s heavy cedar musk was thick in the air, but it wasn't alone. Tangled all over it was the sticky, artificial sweetness of lilac.
Ashlyn.
I stopped dead outside the double oak doors. The wood was solid, but it couldn't block the sound. A wet, ragged gasp drifted through the keyhole, followed by a low, guttural groan I had never heard Callen make with me.
"Callen..." Ashlyn breathed, her voice dripping with practiced sweetness. "What if she finds out before tomorrow?"
"Let her," Callen rasped, his breath heavy and broken. "Tomorrow, I’m the heir of Ironveil. I take who I want."
A sickening wrench twisted my stomach. My inner wolf didn't cower. She woke instantly, slamming her paws against my ribs and baring her fangs in the dark of my chest, snarling with pure, murderous fury.
I didn't turn the brass handle. I didn't burst inside to give them the spectacle they probably wanted. I stood in the corridor for three slow, measured seconds, breathing in the undeniable stench of my arranged mate rolling in bed with his childhood companion.
I had spent two years preparing for this. I was Lola Thornfield, daughter of Alpha Hank. My father arranged this mating to bridge our territories, securing Ironveil's borders with Thornfield’s warriors. I knew Callen was vain, but I had believed in the duty. I had believed the Moon Goddess would give us an honest bond.
Even the Lycan King himself, Demetrius Hamilton—Callen’s reclusive uncle, the legendary "Monk King" who had refused every mate for a century—had reportedly stepped back years ago to let this alliance stand. Callen had walked around like a crowned prince because of it.
He thought he was untouchable.
I turned on my heel and walked back to my room in silence. I locked the door, sat on the edge of the mattress, and stroked Barnaby’s head. I didn't cry. I didn't close my eyes. I sat awake until dawn bled gray light across the carpet.

At ten the next morning, the Great Hall was packed with hundreds of wolves.
Banners of Ironveil and Thornfield hung from the vaulted rafters. My father, Alpha Hank, sat in the front row, his broad shoulders squared and a proud, weathered smile on his face.
I walked down the aisle in my heavy white silk gown. My posture was stiff, my chin lifted high.
Callen was already waiting at the altar. He wore his formal Alpha heir tunic, black wool trimmed with gold. When he looked at me, there was no shame in his eyes. There was only a smug, insolent smirk.
The pack elder stepped forward, holding the silver ceremonial bowl. "We gather under the moon’s eyes to seal—"
"Save it," Callen interrupted loudly.
A murmur rippled across the pews. My father’s smile vanished, his dark eyes instantly sharpening.
Callen turned toward me, crossing his arms over his chest. He raised his voice so it echoed against every stone wall in the hall.
"I, Callen Hamilton, heir-apparent Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Lola Thornfield, daughter of Alpha Hank of the Thornfield Pack, as my mate."
The formal rejection hit me like a silver bullet ripped through my sternum.
A violent, biological shockwave tore through my veins. The budding mate mark on the left side of my neck went instantly freezing cold, then hollow—like an iron door slamming shut in an empty, abandoned house.
My breath caught. The agony buckled my knees, driving me down onto the hard marble floor before hundreds of watching eyes.
Gasps erupted. Pack members stood up in outrage.
In the front row, Ashlyn leaned forward against the carved railing. She was wearing a soft, lavender dress, but my heightened senses caught the truth immediately: she was practically drenched in Callen’s cedar musk, wearing his scent like a cheap trophy. Her hands were pressed over her mouth, her eyes wide with a fake, delicate look of pity.
Callen didn't even look down at me. He kept his back half-turned, flashing Ashlyn a victorious, arrogant wink.
I didn't stay on the floor.
I didn't beg. I didn't scream.
I took one breath, planted my palms against the cold marble, and shoved myself back onto my feet.
The room went dead silent as I smoothed the front of my white gown. My mark throbbed with a dull, icy ache, but my wolf was pacing with lethal clarity.
"I, Lola Thornfield, daughter of Alpha Hank, accept your rejection, Callen Hamilton," I said, my voice steady, flat, and carrying to the very back row.
Callen laughed, turning to face me. "Good. Glad we didn't have to drag it out—"
"And because the mating was the sole condition of our alliance," I interrupted, reaching into the hidden pocket of my silk skirt, "the Thornfield Territorial Accord is void."
I pulled out the folded, iron-stamped document—the border defense treaty Ironveil’s southern valley desperately needed against rogue incursions. I held it up for the entire council to see, then ripped it straight down the middle.
"You gave away your pack’s military shield for a sidepiece," I said clearly.
The silence in the hall shattered. Pack elders jumped to their feet, their faces turning pale with shock. My father let out a low rumble of approval from the front row.
Callen’s face flushed dark red with fury. He clenched his fists, veins bulging along his neck as he realized what he had just cost his pack.
"Elder!" Callen bellowed, his voice cracking with rage as he stomped down the dais steps and grabbed Ashlyn by the wrist, yanking her up toward the altar. "Bring the mating blade! I claim Ashlyn as Luna of Ironveil right now!"
