Chapter 4

The ER doctor wanted to keep me overnight. Maybe longer. She kept saying words like *trauma* and *observation* and *psychiatric evaluation*. That last one made me laugh. It came out sharp and wrong. She stepped back.

"I'm discharging myself," I said.

She looked at the nurse. The nurse looked at my chart. My left ankle was in a temporary cast. My shoulder was back in its socket but wrapped tight. The skin on my back was dressed in gauze that already felt too tight.

"You need rest," the doctor tried again. "And pain management."

"No sedatives."

"You're going to be in a lot of pain."

"I know."

She studied my face. I don't know what she saw there. Something made her stop arguing.

"Fine," she said quietly. "But you need to sign the AMA form."

I signed it. My handwriting looked like my mother's. Neat. Deliberate. Every letter finished.

The nurse came back with discharge papers and a small bottle of ibuprofen. "Take two every six hours," she said. Then she leaned in closer. Her voice dropped. "The gala tomorrow night. The Plaza. It's going to be on E! News. Live coverage starting at eight."

I looked at her.

"I saw your report," she added. "The police one. About the fire." She pressed the bottle into my hand. "I hope you get them."

I didn't say anything. Just nodded.

She left. I sat on the edge of the hospital bed and opened my phone. The smuggled one. The recording was still there. Lucian's voice. Cold. Flat. *You were always just the engine, Elaina.*

I played it back once. Just to be sure. Every word was clear.

Then I opened my sketchbook. The pages were still damp. Wrinkled. But the ink had held. Five years of designs. Five years of dates. Every piece cross-referenced with the medication logs they'd made me sign. Proof that I'd been sedated, institutionalized, and still creating work that Margo was parading as her own.

I knew what was inside every piece. The hidden engravings. The inscriptions. The fragments of my mother's last letter that I'd carved into places no one would think to look.

Margo didn't know they were there.

Lucian didn't know.

But I did.

I pulled out the business card I'd taken from the bulletin board. Serena Voss. Attorney at Law. Pro Bono Services Available.

I dialed.

She picked up on the first ring.

"This is Serena Voss."

"My name is Elaina Ward," I said. "Someone tried to kill me tonight. And I can prove that my fiancé and my best friend have been stealing my work for five years."

Silence. Then: "Where are you?"

"Mercy General. Emergency room."

"Don't move. I'm twenty minutes away."

She hung up.

I sat there. Stared at the wall. The fluorescent lights buzzed. Somewhere down the hall, a baby was crying.

I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. The pain was sharp. Real.

I was still pressing when Serena walked in.

She was younger than I expected. Maybe forty. Dark suit. Hair pulled back. She carried a leather bag that looked expensive and a yellow legal pad that didn't.

She sat down in the plastic chair next to my bed. Didn't say hello. Just: "Tell me everything."

So I did.

I started with the night before the International Gemstone Award. The drugging. The memory loss. The psychiatric hold. I told her about Lucian's visits. The designs I made. The way he always left with my sketchbook and brought it back empty.

I told her about the wedding livestream. The ring. The showcase of Margo's "greatest works" that were all mine.

I told her about the rooftop. Lucian's confession. The recording.

I told her about the fire.

She didn't interrupt. Just wrote. Fast. Her handwriting was terrible.

When I finished, she looked up.

"The sketchbook," she said. "Can I see it?"

I handed it to her.

She opened it. Turned the pages slowly. Stopped on a sketch of the *Siren's Tear* necklace. Read the notes in the margin. The date. The medication log reference.

She looked at me. "You remember what's engraved inside each piece?"

"Every single one."

"And no one else knows?"

"Margo doesn't. Lucian doesn't. They never asked. They just took the designs and ran."

Serena closed the sketchbook. Set it on the bed between us. "The gala tomorrow night. It's being broadcast live. Every major industry executive will be there. Tiffany. Cartier. Vogue. Harper's Bazaar."

"I know."

"If you walk into that ballroom, it needs to be a controlled demolition. Not an explosion. You get one shot at this. If you go in angry, if you go in screaming, they'll write you off as the crazy ex-fiancée. But if you go in calm—" She tapped the sketchbook. "If you go in with proof they can't refute, you bury them."

I looked at her. "I've been planning this for five years. I just didn't know it yet."

She smiled. It wasn't warm. It was sharp. "Good. Then let's make sure it's perfect."

She pulled out her phone. Started making calls. I heard her say *subpoena* and *evidence* and *live television*. Heard her tell someone to meet her at her office in an hour.

When she hung up, she looked at me. "You need to rest. I'll handle the police report follow-up. I'll get the arson investigation escalated. And I'll make sure there's a camera crew outside The Plaza tomorrow night that isn't on Lucian's payroll."

"What do I do?"

"You show up," she said. "And you tell the truth."

She stood. Picked up her bag. Paused at the door.

"Elaina," she said quietly. "What they did to you—" She stopped. Started again. "You're going to win this. Not because the system is fair. But because you kept the receipts."

Then she left.

I sat alone in the too-bright room. My ankle throbbed. My shoulder ached. My back felt like it was on fire.

But my mind was clear.

I opened the sketchbook one more time. Turned to the last page. The design I'd made the night I found out my mother died. The *Broken Halo* earrings. Two circles of white gold. One whole. One fractured.

I'd engraved the date inside the fractured circle. The date my mother's heart stopped.

Margo had worn those earrings on the cover of Vogue.

Tomorrow night, I was going to crack them open in front of five hundred people.

And I was going to watch her world end.
