Chapter 5

The nurse brought me a coat. Too big. Smelled like someone else's cigarettes. I put it on anyway. The hospital gown underneath was thin. Bloodstained at the shoulder. The borrowed coat covered most of it.

Serena stood by the door with her phone pressed to her ear. I heard her say *plainclothes* and *ready to move* and *her signal*. She hung up. Looked at me.

"NYPD will be there," she said. "Inside. Outside. Waiting."

I nodded. My throat was too tight to speak.

"You don't have to do this tonight," she added. "We can wait. Build the case quietly."

"No." My voice came out steady. Stronger than I expected. "It has to be tonight. While the cameras are live. While everyone's watching."

She studied my face. Then nodded. "Okay. I'll meet you there. Side entrance. Thirty minutes."

She left.

I stood in the hallway. The fluorescent lights buzzed. A gurney rolled past. Someone was crying in the room next door.

I walked toward the exit. Each step sent pain shooting up my left leg. The temporary cast was already too tight. My shoulder throbbed. The gauze on my back pulled with every movement.

I kept walking.

Outside, the air was cold. March wind. Rain had stopped but the pavement was still wet. Reflected streetlights in every puddle.

I raised my hand. A taxi slowed. Stopped.

The driver looked at me through the window. Took in the hospital band on my wrist. The borrowed coat. My bare feet.

"You okay?" he asked.

I opened the door. Slid into the back seat. "The Plaza Hotel."

He hesitated. Then pulled into traffic.

I pressed my forehead against the window. Watched the city slide past. Buildings. Lights. People walking fast with their heads down. No one looked up. No one ever looked up.

Five years ago I'd ridden in a taxi to The Plaza for a different reason. Lucian had reserved a table at the Palm Court. Champagne. Strawberries. He'd held my hand across the table and told me I was going to change the world.

I'd believed him.

The sketchbook sat on my lap. Still damp. Pages wrinkled. I opened it to the first page. The one I'd drawn the day after they committed me.

A simple ring. White gold band. Single diamond. Clean lines.

In the margin I'd written the date. The medication dosage. My emotional state: *numb, confused, afraid*.

And at the bottom, in smaller letters: *For Mom*.

I turned the page. Another design. Another date. Another note. *For Mom*.

Every single page. Five years of work. Five years of grief poured into gold and stone and secret inscriptions that only I knew existed.

I'd written *For Mom* so many times the words didn't look like words anymore. Just shapes. A ritual. A prayer.

I closed the sketchbook. Pressed it against my chest.

The taxi turned onto Fifth Avenue. The Plaza rose ahead. Lit up like a cathedral. Flags snapping in the wind. A red carpet stretched from the curb to the entrance. Photographers lined both sides. Flashes popping. Even from here I could hear the voices. The laughter.

The driver pulled to the curb half a block away. "This good?"

I looked at the meter. Pulled crumpled bills from the coat pocket. Serena must have put them there. I handed them over. "Keep the change."

He took the money. Looked at me in the rearview mirror. "You sure you're okay?"

"No," I said. "But I'm going anyway."

I opened the door. Stepped out. The cold hit me immediately. Wind cut through the coat. My bare feet touched wet pavement.

I started walking.

Each step was deliberate. Slow. My left ankle screamed. I didn't care. Just kept moving.

Ahead, the red carpet glowed. I could see people in gowns. Tuxedos. Jewelry that caught the light. Cameras everywhere. A reporter was interviewing someone. Her voice carried: *"...Margo Stevens's most celebrated collection to date..."*

I stopped at the edge of the red carpet. A security guard stepped forward. Young. Uncomfortable in his suit. "Ma'am, this is a private event."

I looked past him. Through the glass doors. Into the lobby. I could see the ballroom entrance. Gold. Glittering. The sound of music and voices spilling out.

Somewhere inside, Lucian was standing next to Margo. Smiling for cameras. Accepting congratulations. Believing he'd won.

"Ma'am," the guard said again. Firmer now. "I need you to step back."

I looked at him. Then at the nearest camera. E! News. The red light was on. Live.

I raised my voice. Not shouting. Just clear. Loud enough.

"My name is Elaina Ward," I said. "The woman in there is wearing my life. And I can prove it."

The camera swung toward me. The reporter turned. Her eyes went wide.

The guard reached for my arm. I didn't move.

"I can prove it," I said again. Directly into the lens. "Every piece in that showcase. Every design with Margo Stevens's name on it. They're mine. And I know what's hidden inside them."

The red carpet went quiet. People stopped walking. Turned. Stared.

The reporter pushed forward. Microphone out. "Elaina Ward? The designer who—"

"The designer who was drugged and committed five years ago," I finished. "By the man in there. And the woman wearing my ring."

Behind me, I heard car doors. Footsteps. Serena's voice: "Let her through."

The guard looked past me. Saw Serena. Saw the two men in suits flanking her. Plainclothes detectives. NYPD shields clipped to their belts.

The guard stepped back.

I walked forward. Onto the red carpet. Cameras followed. Flashes exploded. Questions came from every direction.

I didn't answer. Just kept walking. One step. Then another. My bare feet left wet prints on the red fabric.

The glass doors opened. I stepped into the lobby.

The ballroom entrance was ahead. Open. Music pouring out. I could see the crowd inside. The jewelry displays. The champagne towers.

And at the center, near the stage, I saw them.

Lucian in a black tuxedo. Margo in white. Her hand on his arm. Both of them laughing.

I walked toward the ballroom. Serena and the detectives followed. The cameras followed. Everyone followed.

I stopped at the threshold. The music was loud. No one had noticed me yet.

I opened my sketchbook. Held it against my chest.

Then I stepped inside.

And everything changed.
