Chapter 3

Kade called me at nine that night.

I was still in the boutique's back room, sitting in a chair someone had pulled out for me, a paper cup of water in my hand that I hadn't touched. The ruined gown was already in a garment bag. Someone had been very efficient about that.

"Marcus pulled the footage," Kade said. No greeting. "All of it."

"And?"

"She tore it herself. You were on the platform. She was at the supply table, alone, for eleven seconds." A pause. "The fall was staged. There's a clear angle."

I looked at the paper cup. The water was perfectly still.

"Are you releasing it?"

"No."

That surprised me. I waited.

"She's expecting a fight," he said. "Public, loud, something she can spin. I'm not going to give her that." His voice was even. Measured. "Marcus is making calls. By tomorrow morning, the right people will know exactly what happened in that room. No press release. No statement. Just the truth, moving the way truth moves in this city."

Quiet and fast and impossible to trace back.

"She won't even know it's happening," I said.

"Not until it's already done."

I set the paper cup down on the side table. "Okay."

"Go home, Hadley."

I did.

---

The accident happened three days later.

I was on the FDR Drive, heading back from the clinic, the city moving gray and fast outside the windows. I heard the collision before I felt it—a sharp crack from somewhere ahead, then the world lurched sideways and everything became noise and pressure and the smell of something burning.

When it stopped, I was pinned.

Not badly. My door had crumpled inward, my left side jammed against it, and something had caught my shoulder—not broken, I was almost certain, but the pain was a bright, insistent thing. I could see through the cracked windshield. Three cars, maybe four, tangled together on the ramp.

I heard Dariel's voice before I saw him.

He'd been two cars behind me. I found out later he'd been driving Chana somewhere, the two of them in his car, and the collision had taken his front bumper and spun them into the barrier. Chana's side had taken most of it.

I watched him through the shattered glass.

He got out of his car. He looked around. His eyes found my vehicle for just a moment—I know they did, because I saw the exact second he registered it, registered me—and then Chana made a sound from the passenger seat, sharp and frightened, and he turned back.

He pulled her door open. He got her out. He held her against him on the shoulder of the road, his hand on the back of her head, and he didn't look at my car again.

I sat there pinned and bleeding and I watched him do it.

The paramedics reached me eleven minutes later. I know because I counted.

---

The hospital room was very white.

They'd given me something for the pain, and my shoulder was wrapped, and someone had cleaned the cut above my eyebrow that I hadn't noticed until a nurse pointed to it. I was sitting up in the bed when Kade came through the door.

He looked like a man who had driven very fast and was only now allowing himself to stop.

He crossed the room and stood beside the bed and looked at me—really looked, the way you look at something you were afraid you'd lost—and didn't say anything for a moment.

"I'm fine," I said.

"I can see that." His voice was rough at the edges.

He pulled the chair close and sat down. His left hand rested on the bed rail near mine, not quite touching. The braided bracelet was visible below his cuff.

I looked at the ceiling. White acoustic tile. A small water stain in the far corner shaped like nothing in particular.

"He saw me," I said. "Before he went to her. He saw me and he turned back."

Kade didn't say anything.

"I've been carrying something for a long time," I said. "This idea that somewhere underneath everything, he still—" I stopped. The pain medication made my thoughts slow and honest. "It snapped. Whatever was left. I felt it go."

The room was quiet. Down the hall, someone was being paged.

"I'm ready to stop looking back," I said.

Kade was still for a moment. Then his hand moved the last inch and covered mine, carefully, like something he'd been waiting a long time to do.

"Then don't," he said.

Simple. No ceremony. Just that.

I turned my hand over and let his fingers close around it, and I looked at the water stain on the ceiling until my eyes stopped burning, and outside the window the city went on being the city, indifferent and relentless and entirely unaware that something in me had finally, quietly, let go.
