Chapter 4

He came the next morning.

I heard the knock before the nurse did. Soft. Hesitant. The kind of knock that already knows it isn't welcome.

Dariel stood in the doorway in a gray jacket, his hair slightly off, like he'd driven here without thinking about it. He had flowers. Pale yellow tulips in paper wrapping, the kind you grab from a corner bodega because you need something to hold.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey." I kept my voice easy. Neutral.

He came in and set the tulips on the side table and then didn't know what to do with his hands. He looked at my shoulder, at the bandage above my eyebrow, at the IV line they'd left in as a precaution. His jaw worked.

"I should have—" He stopped. Started again. "When I saw your car, I should have—"

"You had someone hurt in your vehicle," I said. "It made sense to go to her first."

He looked at me then. Really looked. I think he was hoping to find something in my face that would make this easier for him. Anger, maybe. Tears. Something he could respond to.

I gave him nothing.

"Hadley." His voice broke a little on my name. "I know what I did. I know how it looked. I just need you to know that I—that you were never—" He ran a hand through his hair. There it was. "I never wanted to hurt you."

I watched him for a moment. This man my family had taken in. This man I had defended, fed, loved, waited for. He was standing in a hospital room with gas station tulips, asking me to make him feel better about what he'd done.

"I know you didn't," I said. "Thank you for coming, Dariel."

The finality in it landed. I watched him feel it.

He stood there another moment, his mouth slightly open, like he had more to say and couldn't locate it. Then he nodded once, stiffly, and walked out.

I didn't watch him go. I looked at the tulips instead. They were already starting to lean.

The hallway outside was quiet for a long time after that.

---

Three days after discharge, I was in the front sitting room when I heard the cars.

Not one car. Several. I looked through the window and counted. Three black SUVs, idling at the curb. My mother appeared at my shoulder, and her breath caught the same way it had that first night, standing in the foyer watching Chana step out of Dariel's car.

This was different.

Kade came up the front steps alone. Dark coat, no tie. He carried a small leather portfolio under one arm and nothing else. No flowers. No performance.

My father opened the door before he could knock.

Dariel was in the hallway. He'd come again, the third time this week, some excuse about returning a book he'd borrowed years ago. He was standing near the staircase when Kade walked in, and the two men looked at each other for exactly one second.

Kade looked away first. Not from discomfort. From indifference.

He crossed the room and stopped in front of me.

My parents were there. Dariel was there. The housekeeper had paused in the doorway to the kitchen. None of it seemed to register with Kade as a complication.

He opened the portfolio and set it on the side table. A legal document, dense with text, and beside it, a ring box.

He didn't open the box yet.

"I had this drafted fourteen months ago," he said, his voice quiet and even. "The terms give you full, unconditional control over a significant portion of my assets. Not as a gesture. Not as a condition." He paused. "Everything I have built was always meant to be yours."

My mother made a small sound.

Kade opened the ring box then. The stone caught the morning light coming through the front windows and scattered it across the ceiling.

I looked at it. Then I looked at him.

His eyes were steady. Patient. The way they had been in the restaurant, in the hospital room, in every room he had ever occupied near me—like a man who had already made his peace with waiting and was simply glad the waiting was over.

I picked up the ring and held it for a moment.

Then I looked at Dariel.

He was very still. His face had gone the color of old paper. His hand was at his side, not in his hair, just hanging there, like he'd forgotten what to do with it.

I looked back at Kade.

I reached up, took his face in both hands, and kissed him. Slow. Deliberate. The kind of kiss that isn't about the other person in the room—but that he would feel anyway.

Behind me, a door slammed.

Hard enough to rattle the frame. Hard enough that I heard something small fall off the hallway shelf.

Kade's hand came up and rested at the back of my head, steady and warm.

I didn't turn around.
