Chapter 1

The night before our rehearsal dinner, I sat on the living room floor of our Seattle apartment. Seating charts covered the coffee table. I had my planner open. Personal tasks were marked in green, work in blue, and wedding costs in red. Tyler was out with his groomsmen, or so he told me. Elodie had texted earlier to say she was getting an early night to look fresh for tomorrow.

I stretched my neck and unlocked my phone.

Instagram was open. Right at the top of my feed, a pop-up suggested a new account. The handle caught my eye immediately: *@whispers_and_whiskey*.

That was Tyler’s private joke. Whenever we ordered takeout on Friday nights, he would kiss my temple and say, *“Whispers and whiskey, babe. That’s all we need.”*

I stared at the screen. The profile was private, but the tiny circular avatar made the room spin. It showed two hands tangled on a wooden table. On the woman’s wrist was a silver chain with a teardrop tourmaline charm.

I knew that bracelet. I had helped Elodie pick it out in Portland three summers ago.

Beneath the handle, the bio had one single line: *Our secret Napa sunset.*

My breath stopped in my throat. My ribs felt like steel bands tightening around my chest.

Tyler had gone to Napa in May. He told me it was a mandatory corporate retreat. That was the same week I had food poisoning, the same week I finalized the florist contract by myself between dry heaves over the toilet. Elodie had brought me soup that week. She had rubbed my back on this very floor and told me Tyler was working so hard for our future.

I didn't scream. I didn't drop the phone.

A strange, freezing calm washed over me.

I stood up, took my phone, and walked into the master bathroom. I locked the door and sat down on the cold white tile. My hands didn't shake.

I opened Tyler’s shared Google calendar on my phone. Then I went through the account's recent posts visible in the preview grid, checking the dates against his schedule.

May twelfth. Napa.

June third. The weekend Tyler supposedly visited his brother in Spokane.

August nineteenth. My bridal shower. Elodie had posted a picture of Tyler’s silhouette by a hotel pool that exact same morning.

Eight months. It had been going on for at least eight months.

I took screenshots. Every picture. Every caption. Every timestamp. I saved them to a hidden folder on my phone, then backed them up to my secure cloud drive. I was not a woman in love anymore. I was a prosecutor building an open-and-shut case.

The clock on the wall read 2:03 AM.

I pulled up Tyler’s contact. I tapped the screen and initiated a three-way call, adding Elodie.

The phone rang twice. Tyler picked up first, his voice heavy with sleep. “Lia? Babe, what’s wrong? Is it about the caterer?”

A second later, Elodie clicked on the line. “Lia? Why are you calling so late? Are you okay?”

Hearing their voices together made my stomach turn, but my voice stayed level. It was terrifyingly flat.

“May twelfth,” I said into the speaker.

Tyler hesitated. “What?”

“‘Our secret Napa sunset,’” I read from my notes. “‘Tasting Cabernet while the rest of the world sleeps oblivious.’”

Silence fell over the line. Heavy, suffocating silence.

“Lia,” Elodie whispered. Her voice cracked. “Lia, listen to me—”

“June third,” I continued, cutting her off cleanly. “‘His hands know me better than anyone else ever could. Whispers and whiskey in room 402.’”

“Aurelia, please,” Tyler gasped. I could hear rustling sheets. “Stop. Where are you? Let me come home. We can talk about this—”

“The wedding is canceled,” I said.

“Lia, don’t do this!” Elodie cried out. “Think about twenty years! We’re sisters! It didn’t mean anything, it was a mistake—”

“You deserve each other,” I said.

It wasn't an insult. It was a verdict.

I hung up and blocked both of their numbers.

I stood up from the bathroom floor. The apartment was dead quiet.

I sat at the kitchen counter and opened my laptop. I drafted a polite, sterile cancellation notice to our wedding guest list. I hit send.

Next came the vendors. The venue, the photographer, the band, the caterer. I had paid all the deposits from my personal account anyway. I sent formal termination notices to each one, stating clearly that the event would not take place.

At 3:45 AM, I emailed Human Resources at my firm. My vice president had offered me a transfer to the Manhattan office two months ago, but I had turned it down to stay in Seattle for Tyler.

*Dear Karen,* I wrote. *I am writing to accept the New York transfer effective immediately. I can be in the office on Monday morning.*

Then I opened the airline app. One-way ticket to JFK. Departure at 7:15 AM.

I pulled two large suitcases from the hall closet. I packed my work suits, my hard drives, my favorite sweaters, and my physical planner. I took the jewelry my grandmother had left me. I left the engagement ring sitting on the kitchen island, right next to the floral mock-up.

The white wedding dress hung from the bedroom closet door like an empty ghost. I didn't even glance at it.

By 5:30 AM, the cab was downstairs. Gray morning light was just beginning to spill over the Seattle skyline. I rolled my suitcases out the door, pulled it shut behind me, and turned the key.

I didn't cry. Not once.
