Chapter 2

The sublet was a small studio on East 34th Street. It had white walls, a radiator that clanked all night, and a narrow mattress. I didn’t unpack. I lived out of my two suitcases, pulling out clean clothes each morning and zipping them back up.

My planner sat on the laminate desk by the window. Blue ink for work. Green for personal errands. And a new gel pen—pure black—for the evidence and the paperwork.

On Monday morning, I walked into the Manhattan office at eight sharp.

My eyes burned from three nights without sleep, but my spine was straight. My heels made a steady, rhythmic click on the hardwood floors. I lived on black coffee and checklists. Structure was the only thing keeping the ground beneath my feet solid.

The onboarding meeting was on the forty-second floor. A glass conference room, ice-cold air conditioning, and six people around a long walnut table.

Hugo Scott sat directly across from me. He was a senior director. He had dark hair with a trace of gray at his temples, and very still, slate-gray eyes. The other new hires wore big, anxious smiles. They laughed too loud at small jokes. They puffed out their chests to look confident.

I didn’t do any of that.

When the managing partner slid the regional client portfolio toward me, I didn't say, "I'm so thrilled to be here."

I flipped open the folder and scanned the numbers.

"The churn rate on the Northeast accounts jumped four percent in Q2," I said. My voice was quiet and level. "Is that an onboarding issue, or did we lose account managers?"

A younger project manager blinked, startled by the direct question.

Hugo didn’t blink. He leaned back in his chair, his hands resting loose on the table. He looked at me across the glass. His eyes were sharp, taking in my posture, my flat tone, my complete lack of performance. I didn't pretend to know everything. I just asked what mattered.

I met his gaze for a second. He didn't offer a patronizing smile. He just gave a tiny, almost invisible nod. Then he picked up his pen and wrote something down in his notebook.

He didn't speak to me for the rest of the morning. I appreciated that. Silence felt safe.

Two weeks went by. I worked seventy hours a week. I built spreadsheets until my knuckles ached.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, I took the subway home. Cold drizzle blew under my umbrella as I pushed open the heavy brass doors of my apartment building.

The lobby smelled like wet wool and floor wax. Hector, the night doorman, stood stiffly behind his marble counter. His face was pale, his eyes darting toward the elevator bank.

Then I saw the man waiting by the radiator.

It was Tyler.

His trench coat was damp and wrinkled. His tie hung loose around his unbuttoned collar. He had dark stubble on his jaw, and his eyes were red and swollen.

The moment the lobby doors clicked shut behind me, his face crumpled.

"Lia!" he choked out.

He didn't just walk over. He stumbled forward and dropped straight to his knees on the slick marble floor.

Hector flinched and reached for his desk phone.

Tyler didn't care. He grabbed the wet hem of my wool coat with both hands. Tears poured down his cheeks, making ugly, dark tracks on his collar.

"Lia, please," he sobbed. His voice echoed off the high ceiling. "Please, you have to talk to me. I took the red-eye. I’ve been sitting on the radiator for five hours. Don't do this."

I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away. I kept my hands in my pockets and looked down at him.

My chest felt completely empty. No rage. No sorrow. Just a cold, heavy stillness.

"Get up, Tyler," I said.

"No, I’m not getting up!" He gripped my coat tighter, his knuckles white. "You have to listen to me! It was a mistake, Lia. One stupid, drunken night that meant nothing! Absolutely nothing!"

"One night?" I asked. The words barely carried three feet.

"Yes! You know how she is!" Tyler cried, his voice frantic and cracking. "Elodie manipulated me! She got me drunk in Napa, she played on my stress about the wedding, she got inside my head! She planned the whole thing! I swear to God, Lia, she took advantage of me!"

He wiped his nose on his sleeve. He smelled like sour sweat, stale whiskey, and airport coffee.

"My feelings for you are real," he pleaded, his chin trembling. "Ten years. You can't throw ten years into the trash over one drunken mistake. I’ll quit my job. We can sell the condo. We can start over anywhere you want. Just give me one chance. Please."

Hector cleared his throat from behind the desk, looking alarmed. "Miss Hayes? Do you want me to call the police?"

I looked at Hector. "No, Hector. Thank you. It’s fine."

Then I looked back down at Tyler.

This was the man I had planned to marry four days ago. The man who had kissed my cheek while Elodie rubbed my back. Now he was on his knees on a dirty lobby floor, blaming the woman he had secretly held in a hotel room in Napa.

He looked small. Cowardly. Pathetic.

Upstairs on my laminate desk, the black binder was already packed. Every timestamped photo was printed. The financial agreement for the condo down payment and wedding vendors was already typed up and waiting for a signature.

"Let go of my coat," I said quietly.

He let go instantly, trembling, looking up with a pathetic sliver of hope in his eyes. "You'll talk to me?"

"Come upstairs," I said.

Not out of pity. Not out of love.

I just wanted to finish what he had started.
