Chapter 3

The ballroom was perfect. That was the first thing I noticed from the back entrance—the chandeliers casting golden light, the white roses arranged in cascading arcs, the five hundred guests seated in their designer clothes, murmuring with anticipation. Everything exactly as I'd planned it six months ago when I still believed in fairy tales.

Dillon stood at the altar in his tuxedo, laughing with his groomsmen. The sound carried across the room—easy, confident, the laugh of a man who thought he'd gotten away with something. Marcus stood beside him, and I could see the bruises on his wrist where River had twisted his arm this morning. He'd covered them with his cufflinks. The vintage ones I'd given Dillon last Christmas.

River touched my elbow. "Livestream's active," she said quietly. "Twelve thousand viewers and climbing."

I checked my phone. The comments were scrolling fast—guests posting from their seats, strangers tuning in from around the world. Everyone waiting for the bride.

They were about to get her.

The music began. Pachelbel's Canon, just like we'd rehearsed. The doors at the far end of the ballroom opened, and a figure in white appeared—my dress, my veil, my train spreading behind her like a silk river.

Mrs. Snyder took her first step down the aisle.

From where I stood, I could see her swaying slightly. The sedative was mild—just enough to keep her compliant, disoriented. Not enough to make her collapse. She moved forward with the mechanical precision of someone following instructions they couldn't quite remember receiving.

The guests rose. Phones came out. The livestream camera zoomed in on the veiled bride.

Dillon straightened, his performance face sliding into place. He looked nervous now—the good kind of nervous, the kind grooms were supposed to feel. He said something to Marcus, who grinned and clapped him on the shoulder.

The groomsmen were watching the bride approach. I saw Marcus lean toward the man beside him, saw his lips move. Then laughter—low, meant to be private, but the venue's microphones caught everything.

"Look at that dress," one of them said. "Bet she can't wait to get out of it."

More laughter. Dillon glanced at them, his smile widening.

"Give her an hour," Marcus said, louder now, emboldened. "She'll be on her knees thanking you for marrying her."

The comments on the livestream exploded. I watched them scroll past—shock, disgust, some people laughing, others typing in all caps. The groomsmen didn't notice. They were feeding off each other now, their voices carrying across the silent room.

"She's got a nice body under all that lace," another one said. "You're a lucky man, Dillon."

Dillon laughed. "I know," he said, and the microphone caught that too.

The bride reached the altar.

Dillon turned to face her. He reached for the veil—smooth, practiced, the gesture we'd rehearsed a dozen times. His fingers closed on the delicate fabric. He lifted it.

Mrs. Snyder blinked up at him.

For three seconds, nobody moved. The room held its breath. Dillon stared at his mother's face, his hand still frozen on the veil, his expression cycling through confusion, recognition, horror.

Then the screens activated.

Every monitor in the ballroom—the ones meant to display romantic photos of the happy couple—flared to life with video. The groomsmen's voices filled the room, amplified, inescapable: *"She'll be on her knees thanking you." "Nice body under all that lace." "You're a lucky man."*

The camera angle shifted. The bride's face appeared on every screen—Mrs. Snyder, drugged and bewildered, staring out at five hundred people who had just heard her son and his friends describe her body in explicit detail.

Someone screamed. I think it was Mrs. Snyder, finally coherent enough to understand where she was. The room erupted—voices overlapping, chairs scraping, phones raised to capture everything.

I started walking.

River moved beside me, her presence a solid wall at my back. We walked down the center aisle, and the crowd parted without anyone telling them to. I kept my eyes forward. On Dillon.

He saw me. His face drained of color. His mouth opened, but nothing came out.

I stopped ten feet from the altar. The room went quiet again—a different kind of quiet, expectant and razor-edged.

I wasn't wearing white. I was wearing black—fitted, simple, expensive. I looked like I was attending a funeral.

I was.

"Hello, Dillon," I said. My voice carried across the ballroom without effort. "Surprised to see me?"

His jaw worked. "Kinslee, I can explain—"

"Can you?" I tilted my head. "Please. Explain to everyone here how you ended up marrying your mother."

Laughter rippled through the crowd—nervous, shocked, delighted. Dillon flinched.

"This is insane," he said, his voice rising. "You drugged my mother. You—"

"I did," I agreed. "The same way you drugged me into thinking you loved me for five years."

The livestream comments were a blur now. I didn't need to read them. I could feel the room shifting—five hundred people recalibrating everything they thought they knew.

Marcus stepped forward. "You can't do this," he snarled. "You're nobody. You're—"

"Nobody?" I smiled. "That's about to change."

The ballroom doors opened again.

Jeremiah Cole walked in with my stepmother Cynthia at his side.
