Chapter 2

The phone buzzed at 3:02 a.m. I know because I counted the numbers on the clock before I let myself look at the screen.

A photo. The guest suite again, different angle, her shoulder bare against gray tufted fabric. Under it: *He only stays because he owes you. Imagine being a debt someone pays for thirteen years.*

I lay there and let my heart do the thing it does, that hard stutter against my ribs. Then another buzz. Another photo. Then words again, this time slower, like she was savoring the typing. *Does it feel different, knowing? Or were you always just furniture that could hear.*

My hand went for the phone and it wouldn't hold still. I have learned, over twenty-three years, exactly how my hands betray me — the tremor climbing from wrist to fingers, the way anger makes it worse instead of better, the opposite of what anyone would guess. I tried to type *stop.* It came out *stpo.* I backspaced. It came out *sotp.* I gave up on words and just held the delete key down until the screen was blank, and by then there were four more messages waiting, patient as water finding a crack.

At some point I stopped trying to answer at all and just watched my own name light up the screen, over and over, in a room nobody else could hear.

In the morning she had screenshots of every garbled attempt laid out on the kitchen island like evidence at a trial. *sotp. stpo. wat. wat u wnat.*

"I got these at three in the morning," she told Everett, her voice pitched soft and worried, a voice built for an audience. "I didn't want to say anything. But I think she's not doing well."

I had a sentence ready. I'd built it walking down the hall, every word set in place like stones across a river. *She is sending me those. Not the other way.* I opened my mouth at the table and got as far as "She—" before my jaw locked sideways and the rest came out as breath.

"She's just tired, Nat," Everett said, not to me, over me, the way you'd talk about weather. "The birthday was hard on her."

I tried again. "She. Send—"

"I know, baby." He put his hand flat on the table between us, like closing a door. "You don't have to explain. Nobody's upset."

He pulled me into the hallway after, out of her earshot, which I think he believed made it kind. "Her schedule is brutal enough without having to manage your nerves on top of it," he said. "Can you just — try to keep things calm for her? For me?"

I stared at him. Thirteen years and I still couldn't tell if he heard himself.

That night my evening dose came in a different cup. Bigger pill, chalky taste I didn't recognize. "Nat thought we should bump it up a little," he said, standing over me while I swallowed, the way you'd watch a child take medicine you didn't trust them to want. "You've seemed agitated." He didn't call my neurologist. I know because I watched his phone that whole week, the way I watch everything, and her name never once appeared in his recent calls.

So I wrote it down instead. Every date. Every timestamp screenshotted off my own phone with my own slow thumb. The words she'd used. The pill that showed up without a doctor's name attached to it. It took me most of an afternoon, my right hand cramping around the pen every four or five words, but I got it all onto two pages, and my handwriting, though it wobbles, is legible if you're patient. Nobody in this house is patient. I decided I didn't care.

I left it folded on Everett's side of the bed, under his reading glasses, where he'd find it before dinner.

It was gone by four o'clock.

I found it again at five, refolded so precisely the crease looked ironed, sitting square in the center of my pillow like a place setting. Someone had added a line at the bottom in handwriting so much steadier than mine it felt like an insult all its own.

*No one will believe you. Not even your father.*

I sat on the edge of the bed with the pages in my lap until the room went from gold to gray to nothing. I didn't cry. I want to say that like it means something, but it doesn't — my body doesn't always let me cry when it should, another betrayal on the long list. I just sat there, counting the folds in the paper, four of them, and thought about my father's text still sitting unanswered in my tablet. *I'll send the ticket. Just say when.*

I didn't write anything down again after that. Not for a long time. It felt like handing her the knife twice.
