Chapter 3

The screaming started at seven in the morning, while I was still in bed.

I heard Natalia's voice go high and thin down the hall, then Marta's slippers slapping fast against the marble. By the time I got my walker under me and made it to the kitchen doorway, Natalia was sitting on a stool with her wrist pressed to her mouth, and her forearm was blooming with red welts, and Biscuit was pressed flat against the pantry door like he'd done something wrong.

"I can't breathe right," she gasped, and someone put an inhaler in her hand, and she used it like she'd practiced. Maybe she had.

"It's the dog," she said, between pulls. "I didn't want to say anything, I didn't want to make it a whole thing, but it's gotten so much worse this week." Her eyes found mine over the rim of the inhaler. Wet. Perfectly wet. "I'm so sorry, Cami."

I have watched this woman fake tenderness for two years. I know the difference between her real face and her work face. This was work.

I went for my phone, thumb clumsy with sleep and fury, and by the time I'd typed *she is lying* three times and deleted it three times, Everett was already on the phone with someone, already saying the words *boarding facility* and *best for everyone* and *just until we figure this out.*

"Everett." I got that much out clean. He turned.

"I know," he said, before I'd said anything else. "I know he's your dog. But look at her arm, Camille. We can't risk her having a reaction in this house."

"He's — mine." Two words, cracked down the middle, and I hated how they sounded, small and pleading, when what I meant was a sentence with teeth in it.

"It's temporary," he said, already turning back to his call.

I didn't see the paperwork. I never see the paperwork. Everett signs things at the kitchen island with his coffee going cold, and I find out what he decided by watching what happens next.

What happened next was a man in a gray polo shirt clipping a leash I didn't recognize onto Biscuit's collar on a Tuesday morning, while I stood at the living room window in my robe and watched the car pull away from the curb eleven floors down. Biscuit didn't fight the leash. He's twelve. He doesn't fight anything anymore. But he turned his head and looked up at the building before he got in the car, like he was counting the windows the way I count everything, trying to find mine.

The penthouse went quiet after that. Not restful quiet — the other kind. The kind with weight to it, like a held breath that doesn't know when to let go. I sat in the living room for a long time, listening to nothing, and there was no warm body leaning against my leg, no soft huff of breath by my chair, and I understood for the first time how much of the last five years I had survived only because of a dog who waited for me without needing to be asked twice.

That afternoon, I went looking for the boarding facility's address. I wanted to write it down, memorize it, find a way to visit even if I had to ask Marta's grandson to drive me. Everett's study door was unlocked, which never happens, and I told myself that was luck.

It wasn't luck. It was carelessness, and carelessness left a filing cabinet open two inches, and inside that cabinet was thirteen years of my life filed under other people's handwriting.

A folder marked ZURICH — INSTITUTE FOR NEURO-REHABILITATION. Inside, a letter from five years ago, a program director's careful, hopeful language about gait training and voice-output devices, and across the bottom, in Everett's slanted hand: *declined — patient not ready.*

I never saw that letter. Nobody ever asked me if I was ready.

Under it, a scholarship acceptance. My name at the top. Assistive Technology and Design, a two-year program, full funding. I had applied for that in secret, working on the essay for months on a tablet Natalia didn't know I still had access to, telling no one, hoping. The reply had already been opened. Already answered. Not in my writing. *Ms. Rivera regrets that her current care needs prevent her from accepting this opportunity at this time.*

My hands were shaking so hard by then that the pages slid off my lap twice before I gave up trying to hold them still.

Three more folders. Three therapists — the one who taught me to count my breathing, the one who worked on my transfers, one I didn't even remember, a hand specialist from years back. Every clinical note ended the same way, different names, same sentence, underlined twice in someone's ballpoint: *candidate for semi-independent living.* Every folder ended in a termination letter signed by Everett.

I sat on the floor of that study for two hours. The light moved across the carpet and I didn't move with it.

Thirteen years, I thought. Thirteen years of being told I wasn't ready, by the one person deciding what ready would ever look like.
