Chapter 4

I booked the trip on my lunch break, sitting at my desk with a cold turkey sandwich I never touched. Fourteen days. Reykjavik, departing in three weeks. My finger hovered over the confirm button for exactly as long as it took to remember why I was doing this, and then I pressed it, and the screen changed, and it was done.

The hotel took longer to choose than the flight did. I typed in the name from memory — Dane had said it so many times over the years, in that bright, promising voice he used when he was building a future he had no intention of finishing. *Floor-to-ceiling windows, Kiki. North-facing. You won't even have to leave the bed to see them.* I found it in under a minute. Same hotel. Same wing, probably, though I didn't check. I upgraded to the king suite because I could, because for once in my life I wasn't splitting the cost of anything with anyone, and there was a strange, clean satisfaction in typing my card number into a form that belonged to no one but me.

I ordered a parka next. Glacier blue, rated for negative forty. Then I opened a new tab and searched aurora forecasts, and I found a field outside Vík — flat, remote, no light pollution for miles — and I copied the coordinates into the notes app on my phone, the same way I used to copy down seating charts and vendor deposits. A task. A plan. Except this one was only for me.

I knew exactly what I was doing. I want to be clear about that, even now. It wasn't running away. It was walking, finally, toward the one thing that had always been promised to me and never delivered.

Bristol didn't mean to tell him. I believe that completely — she's many things, but careless with my life has never been one of them. It happened at a gallery opening, a work thing, and Dane was there because his family funded half the artists in the room. She told me later, her jaw tight, that he'd asked how I was doing, and she'd said, clipped and dismissive, that I was *fine, busy, finally doing that Iceland thing* — and then she'd heard herself say it and watched his face change, and it was too late to take it back.

He was outside my building by four the next afternoon.

I didn't see him arrive. I found out later he'd tried the lobby first — security stopped him at the turnstiles, told him he wasn't on the visitor list, and he didn't argue, just backed out into the rain and stood there instead, under the awning of the deli across the street, for two hours. Two hours, in November rain, in a suit that wasn't made for weather.

When I came out at six, my collar up against the wind, I saw him before I let myself see him — a shape at the edge of my vision, still and dark against the gray. I didn't slow down. I didn't turn my head. I walked the fourteen steps to the curb where my cab was already waiting, its hazards blinking through the rain like a small, patient heartbeat.

"Keira."

Just my name. Nothing after it. No plea, no apology, no five-page letter read aloud. Just my name, said the way you'd say it if you were afraid it might be the last time you got to.

I opened the door and got in.

Through the wet glass, as the cab pulled away, I let myself look back once — not for him, I told myself, but to check the light had changed. He was still standing there. Rain had flattened his hair to his forehead, and his shoulders had the particular slump of a man who'd stopped expecting a different outcome and kept showing up anyway. The taillights of my cab must have been the last thing he watched disappear that night. I didn't watch him disappear. I faced forward and didn't look again.

I didn't know, that week, what else was happening on the other side of the city. I pieced it together much later, the way you piece together a fire from the smell of smoke that lingers on your clothes long after you've left the building.

Dane had stopped answering Vivian's calls on the first ring. For the first time in over a decade, he let them go to voicemail, and when he finally responded, it wasn't with his usual immediacy — it was a text. Sundays only, he told her. Two to four. No mention of me, no mention of the wedding, no mention of a marriage that had never technically existed. He'd found her a therapist. He would pay. She would go alone.

I imagine her reading that message the way I used to read his — three times, waiting for the words to rearrange themselves into something softer. They didn't. And somewhere in that silence, in the space where his attention used to live rent-free, she opened her contacts and scrolled down to a number she'd been saving for two weeks. No name attached. Just digits, waiting.
