Chapter 2

The older man's hand was still on my back when the crowd shifted. People stepped aside without being asked. A path opened through the center of the room like water parting.

Axel Jacobs walked toward me.

He moved the way powerful men always moved—slow, certain, like the world would wait. His champagne flute caught the light. The liquid inside was pale gold. Expensive. Everything here was expensive.

The men around me went quiet. Marshall's hand dropped from my elbow. The older man's palm slid off my spine. They all took a step back.

Axel stopped three feet away. Close enough that I could see the exact shade of his eyes—the same gray-blue I used to trace with my fingertips in the dark. Close enough that I could smell his cologne, different now, sharper, nothing like the boy who used to wear drugstore aftershave and laugh about it.

He looked at me the way you look at furniture. Assessing. Measuring. Deciding if it's worth the space it takes up.

"Natalie West," he said. His voice was flat. "I didn't think Marshall could get you here."

I didn't answer. I had learned that silence was safer than speech.

He tilted his head slightly, studying me. His gaze traveled down the dress—the sequins, the bare skin, the obvious purpose of it all—and then back up to my face. Something flickered in his expression. Not recognition. Not warmth. Something colder.

"You look different," he said. "Smaller."

Behind him, someone laughed. A woman's voice, high and delighted. I didn't look to see who.

Axel raised his champagne flute to his lips and took a slow sip. Then he lowered it. Turned it in his hand. The light caught the crystal and threw tiny rainbows across the marble floor.

"Do you remember," he said quietly, "what you used to tell me? That you'd never kneel for anyone."

My fingernails pressed into my palm.

He smiled. It didn't reach his eyes. "I always wondered if you meant it."

Then he opened his hand.

The champagne flute fell. It hit the marble with a sound like a gunshot—sharp, bright, final. Crystal exploded across the floor in a spray of glittering shards. Champagne splattered across my shoes, across the hem of the dress, across the polished stone.

The room went very still.

Axel looked down at the broken glass. Then at me. "Clean it up."

I stared at him. My heart was beating too fast. I could feel it in my throat, in my wrists, behind my eyes.

"Kneel," he said, and his voice was soft now, almost gentle. "Polish my shoes. Do it properly, and I'll consider it payment for tonight."

Someone behind me inhaled sharply. A man's voice murmured something I couldn't make out. Marshall said nothing.

I looked at the glass. The shards were everywhere—some as large as my thumb, others ground to powder. The champagne was still pooling, spreading slowly across the marble.

Axel stepped closer. His shoe—black leather, perfectly polished—came to rest at the edge of the broken glass. "Or don't," he said. "Walk out. I'll make a phone call. One call, Natalie. Your mother's hospital processes payments through Jacobs-affiliated channels. Did Marshall mention that?"

My breath caught.

"I can have her funding pulled in under an hour." He checked his watch, a casual gesture, like he was timing something unimportant. "Actually, less than that. Forty minutes, maybe. They're very efficient."

I looked up at him. Really looked. Searched his face for anything I recognized—any trace of the boy who used to fold pink paper into my coat pockets, who used to correct his own grammar because he knew it mattered to me, who used to say my name like it was the only word he needed.

There was nothing. Just ice and contempt and the flat, empty certainty of a man who had already won.

Something inside me made a sound I didn't let reach my throat.

I lowered myself slowly. My knees touched the marble. Then the glass.

The pain was immediate and sharp—dozens of tiny blades biting through skin. I felt warmth spreading beneath my knees. Blood, mixing with champagne, pooling on white stone.

The room was so quiet I could hear my own breathing.

I reached forward. My hand closed around a larger shard. I used it to push the smaller pieces aside, clearing a space around Axel's shoe. The glass cut into my palm. I didn't stop.

Someone laughed. A man's voice, drunk and delighted. "Jesus Christ. She's actually doing it."

Another voice joined in. Then another. The laughter spread like fire.

I pressed the fabric of my dress against the leather of Axel's shoe and rubbed in small, careful circles. The sequins scraped. Blood smeared across black leather. I kept going.

Axel looked down at me. I didn't look up.

Across the room, a phone began to ring.
