Chapter 3

The glass cut deeper with every shift of my weight. I felt the blood spreading—warm, sticky, soaking through the thin fabric at my knees. My palm was slick with it. The sequins on my dress scraped against Axel's shoe leather with a sound that made my teeth ache.

I kept my head down. Kept my breathing even. Kept my hand moving in small, careful circles.

The laughter had settled into a low buzz of conversation. Someone made a joke I didn't catch. Someone else ordered another drink. The world moved on. I was furniture now. Background noise.

Axel's shoe didn't move. He stood perfectly still above me, a statue in Italian leather.

I pressed my fingernails into my palm beneath the cover of my other hand—not hard enough to mark, just enough to feel something I could control. The pain in my knees was white-hot now. I didn't let it show on my face.

Then my phone lit up.

It was on the floor beside my bag, screen-up, vibrating against the marble. The sound cut through the low hum of conversation. People turned to look.

The call connected before I could reach for it. Speakerphone. I hadn't set it to speakerphone. I never did.

A woman's voice poured into the room, bright and giddy and immediately recognizable.

"Natalie? Oh my God, you're not going to believe what just happened."

Felicity.

I froze. My hand stilled on Axel's shoe.

Across town—I knew this because I had seen the promotional posters plastered across every bus stop in Manhattan—Felicity was filming a reality TV segment. Some vapid special about wedding preparations. Behind-the-scenes access to the future Mrs. Axel Jacobs.

She laughed into the phone, the sound high and delicious. "They just called break, and I swear, the producer actually teared up during my interview. I told them about the miscarriage, about how hard it was, and—God, Natalie, you should see the way people look at me now. Like I'm some kind of saint."

The penthouse had gone completely silent.

I stared at the phone. The screen glowed. Felicity's name sat at the top in white letters.

"Are you there?" Felicity's voice turned playful. "Come on, don't be boring. I know you're listening. You always listen."

Someone near the windows made a choked sound.

Felicity kept talking. She always kept talking. "You know what the best part is? Axel still doesn't know. Five years, and he still thinks it was his baby. He still thinks you did something to me." She laughed again, louder this time. "I mean, technically, it wasn't even his. Remember that guy from the steakhouse? The one in the grey suit who never tipped? Yeah. That was the father. Well—" She paused. The sound of liquid pouring. A glass being set down. "—not that it matters now. There was no baby to begin with after the first month. I just... kept the story going. You know how it is."

I looked up.

Axel was staring at the phone. His face had drained of all color. The champagne flute in his hand trembled.

"Oh!" Felicity's voice brightened, like she had just remembered something delightful. "And that stupid little sister of yours—Dani, right? God, she made it so easy. Running around Hollywood like a lamb begging to be slaughtered. I didn't even have to do anything. Just made sure the right people knew she was desperate. No family, no money, no protection." She sighed, content. "I heard she OD'd in some hotel room. So tragic."

A woman across the room gasped.

Felicity wasn't finished. "And your dad—what was his name? Warren? The heart attack was perfect timing, honestly. I thought Axel might ease up after that, but nope. He just kept going. Pulled every string, called in every favor. It was beautiful to watch."

Axel's champagne flute slipped from his hand.

It hit the floor. Shattered. No one moved.

"Anyway," Felicity continued, oblivious, "I just wanted to check in. Make sure you're still out there, still struggling, still—"

Axel lunged for the phone.

He dropped to his knees beside me—not graceful, not controlled, but collapsing—and grabbed the phone with both hands. "Felicity," he said, and his voice cracked on her name. "Felicity, what—"

The line went dead.

For three seconds, no one breathed.

Then every phone in the room began to buzz at once.

Someone near the bar said, "Oh my God. Oh my God, it was live."

Another voice: "The whole thing. The mic was on. It broadcast."

"Millions of people just heard—"

Axel turned to look at me.

I was still kneeling. Still bleeding. Still surrounded by broken glass.

His face was white. His hands were shaking. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

I looked at him. Really looked. Let him see everything in my eyes—every year, every loss, every single thing his certainty had cost.

Then I stood.

Blood ran down my legs. My knees screamed. I didn't care.

I picked up my bag. Stepped over the glass. Walked toward the elevator.

Behind me, Axel made a sound—low, broken, inhuman.

I didn't look back.

The elevator doors closed on his face as he screamed my name.
