Chapter 1

Marshall Kelley's office smelled like stale coffee and desperation. I stood in the doorway and watched him shuffle papers on his desk, the same performance he always gave when he wanted me to feel like I was interrupting something important. The truth was simpler: Marshall had never been important enough to be interrupted.

"Natalie. Come in. Sit." He didn't look up.

I stayed standing. I had learned years ago that sitting in Marshall's office meant staying longer than I wanted to.

He sighed, the sound of a man whose patience was a gift he was choosing to bestow. Then he pulled a garment bag from behind his desk and laid it across the chair I hadn't taken. The plastic crinkled. Through the clear panel, I could see sequins. A lot of sequins. Not much else.

"You're booked tonight," he said. "High-profile event. Manhattan. Very exclusive."

I looked at the dress. Then at him. "What kind of event."

"Networking." He smiled. The word sat in the air between us like something rotting. "Pre-wedding gala. Penthouse venue. You'll wear this, you'll smile, you'll let the right people see you. Easy night."

I reached for the garment bag and unzipped it halfway. The dress was barely there—a scrap of black sequined fabric that would cover approximately nothing. I had worn worse. That was the problem. I had worn worse, and Marshall knew it, and we were both aware that I would wear this too.

"Whose wedding," I said.

Marshall's smile widened. "Axel Jacobs. You might remember the name."

My hand stilled on the zipper. I did not let my face move. I had practiced this for five years—the art of not reacting, of keeping everything smooth and blank and unreadable. But Marshall was watching me the way a man watches an insect under glass, looking for the twitch.

"I'm not going," I said.

He leaned back in his chair. "Your mother's treatment facility processes payments through Jacobs-affiliated financial channels. Did you know that? I didn't either, until this morning. Funny how these things connect."

I looked at him. He looked back. We both knew what he was saying. We both knew I had already lost.

I took the garment bag. "What time."

"Car picks you up at seven. Don't be late." He turned back to his papers, already bored. "And Natalie? Smile tonight. You used to be good at that."

I walked out without answering.

The elevator to the penthouse was mirrored on all sides. I stood in the center and watched five versions of myself rise through the building. The dress clung and shimmered and left almost nothing to the imagination. I had pulled my hair back. I had done my makeup. I looked expensive and available, which was the point.

I pressed my fingernails into my palm—not hard enough to mark, just enough to feel.

The elevator doors opened at exactly seven fifty-five. I was always early. It was a habit from another life, when punctuality was about respect. Now it was about survival. Five minutes to assess the room before anyone assessed me.

I stepped into a marble foyer flooded with golden light. Through the glass wall ahead, I could see the main room: a sea of beautiful people holding champagne flutes, their laughter high and careless. I recognized several faces. Men who had once attended my father's dinner parties. Men who had shaken his hand and called him Warren and smiled.

They didn't recognize me. Or they pretended not to. It was hard to tell the difference anymore.

I adjusted my expression into the smooth, empty composure I had worn for five years. Then I walked through the glass doors into the gala.

Marshall found me within thirty seconds. He always did. He put a hand on my elbow and steered me toward a cluster of men in tailored suits, all of them holding drinks, all of them turning to look as we approached.

"Gentlemen," Marshall said, his voice warm and easy, "I'd like you to meet Natalie West."

The name landed. I watched it register. One of them—sandy-haired, mid-thirties, already drunk—grinned. "West? As in the West family?"

"The very same," Marshall said.

The man's grin widened. "Didn't think princesses did this kind of networking."

The others laughed. I stood very still.

Another man, older, leaned in close enough that I could smell his cologne. His hand slid down my back, slow and deliberate, stopping just above the base of my spine. "How much for an hour?" he murmured.

I didn't answer. I had learned that answering made it worse.

Across the room, I saw him.

Axel Jacobs stood near the far windows, a drink in one hand, his posture loose and imperial. He was older now. Sharper. His suit fit the way only custom tailoring fit, and his expression was cold and faintly amused, like a man watching a play he had already seen.

He was looking directly at me.

Someone nearby said something I didn't catch. The men around me laughed again. I felt the older man's hand still resting on my back.

Axel raised his glass in a small, mocking salute.

I looked away first.
