Raylan's grip on my wrist tightened as he steered me away from the main crowd. Not far enough to be private, but isolated enough that the guests who watched us would see a quiet conversation rather than a confrontation. The alcove he chose overlooked the ballroom through a decorative glass partition—we were still visible, still on display, but the acoustics gave him the illusion of control.

He released my wrist and stepped back, his social mask sliding away like a curtain dropping after a performance. What remained was colder. Sharper.

"Let's talk honestly," he said, his voice carrying the reasonable tone of a man explaining simple mathematics. "You cost me a promotion at the firm, Ella. My supervisor told me directly—I was too distracted, too emotionally unavailable. Your constant need for reassurance, your insecurity, your inability to understand that I had ambitions beyond our little relationship—it was a liability I couldn't afford."

I stared at him. The words were so practiced, so fluent, that I knew he had rehearsed them. Possibly for weeks.

"That's not what happened," I said quietly. "I supported you. I paid for—"

"You chose to do those things," he interrupted, speaking over me with the ease of someone who had never truly listened in the first place. "I never asked you to pawn anything. I never demanded your help. You made those choices because you wanted to feel needed. That's not my responsibility."

The mention of the bracelet—delivered so casually, so dismissively—hit me like a physical blow. My fingers pressed against the bare skin of my left wrist, searching for the weight that was no longer there.

"The bracelet was my grandmother's," I said, my voice barely audible. "It was the only thing I had left of her."

Raylan laughed. Not cruelly, but with genuine amusement, as though I had just said something charmingly naive. "And you chose to get rid of it. That's on you, Ella. I didn't force you. You wanted to play the martyr, and now you're upset that martyrdom isn't as rewarding as you thought it would be."

I went still. Completely, utterly still. The noise of the ballroom faded into a distant hum, and all I could hear was the sound of my own breathing and the faint ringing in my ears.

Raylan adjusted his cufflinks—a small, nervous gesture disguised as composure—and continued. "The seventy thousand for the banquet is a fraction of what you actually owe me. Three years of my life, Ella. Three years I could have spent building my career, making the right connections, positioning myself for success. Instead, I was stuck managing your emotional needs and your constant insecurity. So yes, you're going to cover the bill. Consider it compensation for wasted time."

I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could speak, the sound of heels clicking against marble echoed through the alcove. I turned.

Mrs. Collins swept into the space like a queen entering her throne room. Her dress was expensive—aggressively so—covered in embroidery and dripping with jewelry that caught the light with every movement. She had dressed for this night as though it were her own coronation, the social debut she had been planning for years.

Her eyes landed on me, and her expression shifted into something that resembled satisfaction. Not anger. Not even contempt. Satisfaction.

"So this is her," she said slowly, her voice carrying the deliberate cadence of a woman performing a lesson. "The girl who thought she could hold my son back."

She moved closer, and I caught the scent of her perfume—heavy, cloying, expensive. In her hands, she carried a small porcelain bowl filled with something dark and cold. Fish soup, I realized. Leftover from the banquet. But as she set it on the narrow ledge beside me, I saw the cigarette butts floating on the surface, the thick globules of phlegm clinging to the edges.

She had prepared this.

"If you want us to believe you're sincere about making amends," Mrs. Collins said, her tone unhurried and relishing every syllable, "then you'll drink this. All of it. Right now."

I stared at the bowl. At the contaminated soup. At the woman who had brought it here like an offering.

Behind her, I could see Amoura's phone still recording, the red light blinking steadily. The guests beyond the glass partition had stopped pretending not to watch. They were an audience now, waiting to see if I would break.

Mrs. Collins smiled thinly. "Go on, dear. Show us how sorry you are."

My fingers curled against my palm. The bare skin of my wrist felt impossibly light.

And for the first time since I had walked into this ballroom, I felt something other than grief.

I felt clarity.
