Chapter 3

The silence spread like spilled ink. Conversations died mid-sentence. Champagne flutes paused halfway to painted lips. The guests who had been pretending not to watch now abandoned all pretense, their eyes fixed on the alcove where I stood facing a bowl of contaminated soup and a woman who had prepared it like a sacrament.

Amoura's phone swept from the bowl to my face, the red recording light steady and unblinking. Her voice carried across the space, bright and theatrical. "She hasn't touched it yet — let's see if she has any respect left."

I watched the screen in her hand fill with comments. Scrolling text, anonymous cruelty, the collective judgment of strangers who knew nothing except what Amoura chose to show them. She leaned closer, reading aloud with obvious relish.

"'Make her drink it,' says user BlueRose92. 'She deserves worse,' from TruthTeller44. Oh, this one's good — 'Gold-diggers always cry when they lose.' Should I tell them you're crying, Ella? Are you?"

I wasn't. My eyes were dry. My breathing was steady. I stared at the bowl — at the cigarette butts floating like dead insects, at the film of grease catching the light, at the thick globules clinging to the porcelain rim — and felt absolutely nothing.

Mrs. Collins' smile thinned. My silence was frustrating her more than any protest would have.

"Drink it," she said again, her voice harder now. "Unless you want everyone here to know exactly what kind of person you really are."

My hand moved. Not toward the bowl. Toward the bare skin of my left wrist, pressing against the place where my grandmother's bracelet used to rest. The gesture was automatic. Unconscious. A search for comfort that had become muscle memory.

Raylan saw it. His expression shifted — not to guilt, but to impatience. He checked his watch, a quick flick of his wrist that suggested I was wasting his time. Then he reached into his jacket and produced a folded document.

He unfolded it slowly, smoothing the creases with deliberate care, and slid it across the narrow ledge beside the soup bowl. The paper was crisp. Official-looking. Covered in dense legal text and numbers that seemed to multiply as I stared at them.

"Let's settle this properly," Raylan said, his voice pleasant and reasonable. "Quietly. No more drama."

I looked down at the document. A promissory note. Five hundred thousand dollars. My name typed neatly at the bottom, followed by a signature that looked almost exactly like mine. Almost.

I had never signed this.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

Raylan's smile didn't waver. "Documentation. You borrowed money from me over the course of our relationship. Medical expenses, rent assistance, personal loans — it all adds up. This is just making it official. Press your thumbprint here" — he tapped the bottom of the page — "and we can move past all of this."

I stared at the forged signature. At the fabricated line items. At the sum that had appeared out of nowhere, conjured like a magic trick designed to trap me.

"I never borrowed anything from you," I said quietly. "I gave. You took."

"That's your interpretation." Raylan adjusted his cufflinks — that small, nervous tell he thought no one noticed. "The paperwork tells a different story. And paperwork is what matters in the real world, Ella. Not feelings. Not sentiment. Documentation."

Behind him, Amoura zoomed in on the document, narrating for her audience. "Half a million dollars! Can you believe it? She's been living off him this whole time, and now she doesn't want to pay it back. Unbelievable."

The comments flooded faster. I could see them scrolling past in my peripheral vision, a river of anonymous judgment.

Raylan leaned closer. His voice dropped, quiet enough that only I could hear it beneath Amoura's bright commentary and the distant hum of the ballroom. "If the money is a problem," he said, "there are other ways to settle this. I have a business associate — very successful, very discreet. He's expressed interest in spending an evening with you. One night, and the debt disappears. Simple."

The words landed with perfect clarity. No ambiguity. No room for misinterpretation.

I looked up at him. At the man I had loved. The man I had sacrificed for. The man I had believed in when he had nothing.

His eyes were cold. Patient. Waiting for my answer.

Something inside me — the last thread of whatever I had felt for Raylan Collins, the final fragile strand of hope that maybe, somewhere beneath the cruelty, the person I had loved still existed — snapped clean.

I felt it break. Felt the severed ends fall away into nothing.

My hand moved to my clutch. My fingers closed around the cool metal of my satellite phone.

I pulled it out slowly. Deliberately.

Raylan's eyes flicked to the device. His smile faltered for the first time.

I pressed a single number. The line connected immediately.

"Nathan," I said quietly, my voice steady and cold. "Lock down the building. No one leaves."
