Chapter 2

I spent my first night in a quiet hotel room near the river. The room was simple and clean. For the first time in three years, my shoulders didn't ache. I didn't set an alarm. I woke up to soft morning light and brewed a cup of black coffee.

I knew exactly what Ryan woke up to.

He would wake up in our king-sized bed, reach over, and find cold sheets. He would walk into the kitchen, looking for the breakfast I usually made him. Instead, he would find an empty counter and a single diamond necklace lying under the lights.

He didn't take it seriously, of course.

Around noon, I checked my phone. My blocked-caller folder had nine missed calls from him. By the next evening, the count reached forty-three.

Forty-three calls in two days.

Ryan wasn't worried. He was annoyed. To him, this was just a game I was playing.

On Tuesday afternoon, my old building manager called me.

"Elaina?" he said. "A courier just brought two dozen red roses from Mr. Howell. Should I bring them up to your unit?"

"No, Leo," I said. "Send them back."

"Are you sure? They look very fresh. Very expensive."

"Send them back unopened," I told him, keeping my voice steady. "And please don't accept any more packages in my name."

An hour later, Ryan’s executive assistant called my personal line.

"Elaina, hi," she said, sounding hesitant. "Ryan asked me to book a table for two at Bistro Marcel this Friday. The corner booth you like. He said you two had a little lovers' quarrel and you'd be ready to talk by the weekend."

I almost laughed. "Cancel the reservation, Clara."

"He was very sure you'd come," she said.

"Tell him to read section four of my exit agreement," I said quietly. "Have a good day."

I hung up. Ryan truly believed I was throwing a tantrum. He thought a bouquet of roses and a plate of warm pasta would bring me crawling back to his bed.

He had no idea what was coming.

By the end of the week, the cracks began to show.

I met my former lab assistant, Sophie Nguyen, at a small café three blocks from Lumina's headquarters. She rushed through the door, out of breath, and dropped into the chair across from me. Her eyes were bright with panic.

"It's a disaster, Elaina," Sophie whispered, leaning over the table. "A total disaster."

I took a sip of my coffee. "The production line?"

"The yield rate crashed below thirty percent," Sophie said, shaking her head. "Batch four separated into gray sludge this morning. The cream won't emulsify. It looks like sour milk."

I didn't flinch. I had spent eight months perfecting that emulsion. The botanical peptides required a specific temperature curve. Every forty minutes, the pH level had to be manually balanced. It wasn't written in the official company logs. It was stored in my private notebooks—the ones sitting safely in my hotel room.

"What did Ryan do?" I asked.

"He called an emergency meeting in the lab," Sophie said. "He slammed his tablet on the steel counter and shouted at everyone. He asked why a team of ten chemists couldn't mix a simple jar of face cream."

"And what did Dr. Evans tell him?"

"Evans looked him in the eye and said, 'Because Elaina balanced the active lipids by hand. She carried the whole formula.' Ryan went dead pale. He just stared at the mixing vats like he couldn't breathe."

For three years, Ryan thought my job was easy. He thought chemistry was just following a recipe on a box. Now, the factory machines were spitting out garbage, and contractual delivery deadlines were ticking down.

Still, his pride wouldn't let him bend.

"He’s desperate to keep the investors calm," Sophie said, pulling out her phone. "Look at what happened this morning. Someone in the lab took a video."

She slid the screen toward me and pressed play.

It was a lab walkthrough for three major venture capitalists. Ryan was there, dressed in a sharp navy suit. Beside him stood Kaylani Cruz.

Kaylani wore a tight designer dress and heavy makeup under clear safety goggles. She smiled for the cameras, posing near the stainless steel tanks. She looked like a model pretending to work in a hospital.

One of the lead investors pointed toward a row of failed, murky test tubes on the rack. His face was stern. "Ryan, market rumors say your batch consistency is failing. Can Lumina actually hit next month's launch date?"

Ryan opened his mouth, but before he could spin a lie, Kaylani chimed in.

She gave a bright, airy laugh. "Oh, don't worry about that! Why can't the team just redo the formula from scratch in a few days? Skincare isn't that hard, right?"

The words hung in the air.

The technician standing beside the tank stopped working. He slowly turned his head and stared at Kaylani in complete, horrified silence.

The three investors exchanged cold looks. Nobody laughed. Nobody smiled.

The entire room turned freezing cold.

The camera zoomed in on Ryan. His charming smile froze on his lips. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. His left hand moved to his wrist, nervously twisting the heavy watch he always touched when panic set in.

He looked at Kaylani, then down at the ruined vats of serum.

For the first time in his life, Ryan realized the truth.

He had traded away the woman who built his empire for an empty face with a million followers. He had thrown away forty-seven revisions of scientific brilliance for a muse who didn't know the difference between water and oil.

He was bleeding money, his company was falling apart, and the only person who could save him had already locked the door.

I handed the phone back to Sophie.

"Keep me updated," I said softly.

I picked up my coat, stepped out into the crisp morning air, and didn't look back.
