Chapter 3

Sophie texted me at noon with updates from Lumina.

Ryan had spent the entire morning tearing apart my old basement office.

He had broken the lock on my bottom desk drawer. He had pulled out my old lab scratchpads, thinking he could copy my steps. When he couldn't make sense of them, he called Dr. Evans and three other senior chemists into the room. He slammed the pads onto the steel counter and ordered them to decipher the notes.

None of them could.

My formulation notes were written in my personal shorthand. I used symbols, altered Greek letters, and reversed ratios that only made sense to me. Dr. Evans told him it was impossible to decode. Ryan threw the pad against the glass wall and cursed.

Then the panic really kicked in.

He sent his assistant, Clara, to our old apartment. Leo, the building manager, didn't even let her past the lobby.

"Miss Morgan vacated the lease yesterday," Leo told her. "Her keys are returned. Her closets are cleared out. The unit is completely empty."

Ryan tried my old university email address next. The message bounced back instantly: *Address deactivated.*

He called four mutual friends from our college days. He called our old chemistry professors. None of them knew where I went. The two who did know refused to give him a straight answer.

Three days ago, Ryan stood on that brightly lit stage and wiped my name from Lumina's history. He erased three years of my life in front of hundreds of people.

Now, he was scouring the city, desperate to find me.

The woman who built his company had vanished as completely as he had erased her from the stage.

At two o'clock, a sleek black town car picked me up from my hotel.

It brought me straight to the headquarters of Vantage Group. The tower stood sixty stories tall, made of dark steel and gleaming glass.

Cal Warren was waiting for me on the top floor of the research wing.

He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. No tie. His posture was upright, relaxed, and commanding. When he saw me step out of the private elevator, his dark eyes softened just a fraction.

"Elaina," he said. His voice was low and calm.

"Cal," I replied.

He didn't make small talk. He didn't ask about Ryan, and he didn't bring up the gossip surrounding Lumina's launch. He simply offered his hand, shook mine firmly, and guided me down the quiet corridor.

We stopped in front of a pair of frosted glass doors.

There was a silver nameplate mounted on the wall.

*Elaina Morgan. Chief Formulation Scientist.*

I stopped walking.

My breath caught in my throat. I stood there and stared at the engraved letters.

For three years at Lumina, I had worked in a windowless room in the basement. There was never a plaque on the wall. My name was never printed on a door, on the company website, or on a single jar of cream. Ryan always told me it was safer to keep me off the radar. He said titles didn't matter when two people loved each other.

It had been a convenient lie to keep me invisible.

"Something wrong?" Cal asked quietly.

He didn't crowd me. He stood half a step behind, giving me all the space I needed.

"No," I whispered. My fingers curled tight against my palm. "Nothing is wrong."

I lifted my chin and pushed the door open.

The lab was breathtaking.

Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Stainless steel counters gleamed under warm white lights. Brand-new centrifuge machines, digital spectrometers, and sterile mixing vats sat waiting in perfect order.

A team of six senior technicians stood near the back in crisp white lab coats. When they saw me, they straightened up and nodded with genuine respect.

Cal walked to the center of the room. He didn't brag about the equipment. He didn't lecture me about quarterly profits or company expectations.

He turned around and looked at me. "This space is entirely yours, Elaina. The team reports only to you. You set the hours, you choose the projects, and you own the work."

I met his gaze. "What do you expect from me first?"

Cal offered a faint, quiet smile. "Whatever you want to make. Tell me what you need, and my office will provide it. That's all."

He gave me a brief nod, turned around, and walked out, closing the door softly behind him.

He didn't hover. He didn't try to control me. He just gave me the tools and trusted me to use them.

By seven in the evening, the technicians had packed up and gone home. The lab was peaceful and quiet.

Outside the glass, the sky faded into a deep shade of purple. The city lights began to flicker across the river.

I poured myself a cup of black coffee, steaming hot. I sat down at my wide mahogany desk.

I reached into my bag and pulled out my worn black formula notebook.

For three years, I had written in secret. I had tested forty-seven revisions of a miracle formula in the dark, watching another woman take credit for every drop.

I opened the notebook to a blank, clean page. I clicked my pen.

Under the bright lights, with no one looking over my shoulder, I wrote down the first line of Revision 48.
