After My Alpha Used the Bond Command on Me

Chapter 2

I sat by Abigail's bed for twenty minutes that night. Her chest rose and fell in that same shallow, unhurried rhythm it had kept for two years—technically alive, technically breathing, technically nothing at all. I held her hand and told her about the bonfire preparations, the way I always did, filling the silence with small useless words because the alternative was silence itself.

My phone buzzed against my thigh when I finally stood to leave.

A message from an unknown number. An audio file, no caption. I almost didn't open it. Some healer's instinct—call it dread—told me to wait until I was alone in the Luna quarters before I pressed play.

Asher's voice. Talking to Marcus. Casual, unhurried, the register he used when he thought no one worth impressing was listening.

*"Her wolf's been gone for months, Marcus. The root isn't healing anything. It's just enough to keep the body from finishing what the wolfsbane started. As long as Caroline believes there's something left to save, she does exactly what I tell her."*

I listened to it three times. Then I sat down on the edge of the bed and did not cry.

I had spent three years absorbing pain the way a healer absorbs blood on gauze—necessary, expected, disposable once it dried. But this was different. This wasn't pain. This was proof that every hour I'd spent hoping had been hours he'd spent laughing.

I pressed two fingers to my wrist. Heartbeat elevated but not racing. Breathing shallow but controlled. Good. I could still think.

So I thought.

I made a list in my head, the way I'd been trained to make lists—symptoms, dosages, timelines, nothing wasted. Except this list wasn't medical. It was a ledger of everything Asher held over me.

The moonpetal supply—his, locked, dosed by his order alone.

The bond command—biological, permanent, unbreakable by anything short of the bond itself dying.

The mark—a brand that let him reach into my body from across a room.

The pack hierarchy—every ranked wolf conditioned for three years to see me kneel and think nothing of it.

Four levers. Four chains. I counted them the way I might count wounds on a patient, clinically, without flinching, because flinching wouldn't close them.

Then I counted what I had.

Three years of walking every hallway in this pack house, cataloguing which doors locked and which didn't, which rooms Asher entered with confidence and which he avoided. A healer's memory for inventory—I could recite the medical stores down to the ounce, including the wolfsbane records buried in the archive room nobody but the supply clerk and I ever visited. And somewhere in Ironveil's old diplomatic files, a communication protocol so outdated that Asher had probably forgotten it existed, if he'd ever known at all.

I would never ask him for anything again. Asking had cost me two years and my sister's dignity. What I needed now wasn't inside these borders.

I needed someone with authority higher than his.

The protocol was still in the archive room, exactly where I'd found it during a filing task two years ago—an old inter-pack diplomatic channel, half-forgotten, meant for emergencies between allied territories and the Lycan royal houses. I'd memorized it out of habit, the way I memorized everything, never imagining I'd use it against my own Alpha.

I wrote the message with a healer's restraint. No mention of the mark. No mention of kneeling, of Francesca's shoes, of Asher's hand at my throat. Just the facts a trained healer would need.

*Female, twenty-four, wolfsbane exposure two years prior. Sustained moonpetal root administration since. Requesting consultation on irreversibility markers and appropriate dosage protocols for long-term suppression cases.*

I signed it only with initials. I sent it into the dark and did not expect an answer before morning.

I got one within three hours.

*Prince Theo Silvercrest. Confirmed receipt.*

My hands went still over the phone. I remembered him—barely, the way you remember weather from a particular year rather than a particular day. A Come of Age Ceremony, years ago, a young wolf shifting badly in front of a crowd that only knew how to shout at him. I'd talked the boy down while everyone else postured. I hadn't looked up to see who was watching.

Apparently, someone had.

His reply was longer, and it did not waste a single word.

*Wolf-death from prolonged wolfsbane exposure without treatment within the first seventy-two hours is irreversible. Moonpetal root does not restore wolf function—it slows tissue decay by suppressing the body's rejection of a wolfless state. What you're describing isn't maintenance. It's suspension. There is no version of this where two years of dosing produces recovery.*

Then, four words that landed harder than the diagnosis itself.

*What do you need?*

I stared at the screen for a long time. No one had asked me that in three years.

I pressed two fingers to my wrist again. Steady. Still steady.

I began typing my answer.
