Chapter 3

I wrote back the same night.

*Legal options.*

Two words. Clinical. Exact. The same tone I used when requesting supply orders from the medical archive—no emotion, no elaboration, just the need stated plainly.

Theo's reply came within the hour, and it was longer than anything he'd sent before.

*The Lycan Council holds constitutional authority over all Alpha territories. Documented evidence of illegal wolfsbane acquisition, stockpiling, and weaponization—particularly when used as coercion against a mate or pack member—is grounds for title stripping under Lycan law. If you can prove intent and pattern, the Council has jurisdiction to act. What you're describing isn't just unethical. It's prosecutable.*

Then, at the bottom: *Do you have access to records?*

I stared at the screen. My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

*I know where they are.*

Send.

I set the phone down and pressed two fingers to my wrist. Heartbeat elevated but steady. I could do this.

Over the next three days, Theo and I built something I didn't have a name for yet. It wasn't friendship. It wasn't rescue. It was information exchanged between two people who understood that precision mattered more than sentiment.

He asked about storage protocols. I described the locked archive room, the supply clerk's rotation schedule, the fact that only Asher and Marcus had keys but I'd watched them unlock it enough times to know the mechanism was old and the tumblers stuck on the third pin.

He asked about dosing records. I sent him photographs—taken with my phone held low, angled to avoid glare, every page clear enough to read the dates and quantities. Moonpetal root, administered in micro-doses. Two years of entries. Not one notation suggesting therapeutic intent.

He asked if I was safe doing this. I didn't answer that question.

What I noticed, in the spaces between messages, was that Theo never told me what to do. He gave me information. He clarified jurisdiction, outlined procedures, confirmed what would hold up under Council scrutiny and what wouldn't. But he never said *leave now* or *wait for me* or any of the things I'd heard in my head from every imagined version of help I'd constructed over three years.

He was giving me standing, not orders.

Sera stirred for the first time in days, cautious but no longer howling.

*He's different,* she said quietly.

I know.

*You trust him?*

I trust his information. That's enough.

I moved through the pack house the way I always had—neutral expression, healer's posture, Luna's composure. I refilled medical supplies. I checked inventory logs. I nodded at Gammas in the hallways and smiled blandly at the Omegas restocking linens.

No one noticed.

Three years of being invisible had taught me exactly how to stay that way when it mattered.

The archive room was in the east wing, past the old training halls nobody used anymore. The supply clerk—a middle-aged Delta named Iris—worked mornings only, which meant afternoons the room sat locked and silent. I'd filed records there dozens of times. I knew which floorboards creaked and which shelves blocked the security camera's sightline.

I went in on a Thursday, two hours after Iris left for the day.

The lock took me four minutes. My hands didn't shake. I'd practiced the motion in my head enough times that my fingers knew what to do before my mind caught up. The third tumbler stuck exactly where I'd expected. I eased it through, felt the bolt slide, and stepped inside.

The wolfsbane records were filed under 'Medical Suppressants'—a bureaucratic euphemism that would have been funny if it weren't so perfectly Asher. I pulled the binder, set it on the clerk's desk, and started photographing.

Quantities. Dates. Supplier codes that didn't match any licensed medical distributor I recognized. Dosing authorizations signed only by Asher, never countersigned by a healer. Two years of evidence that this wasn't treatment. It was leverage, maintained with the same methodical precision he used for everything.

I took forty-three photographs. I put the binder back exactly where I'd found it, wiped down the desk surface, and left the archive room locked behind me.

No one saw me enter. No one saw me leave.

That night, I sent the files to Theo with a single line of text.

*Is this enough?*

His reply came fast.

*Yes. This is prosecutable. When you're ready, I can arrange a tribunal hearing. But Caroline—once you trigger this, it moves fast. The Council doesn't do warnings. Make sure you're ready.*

I read that message three times.

Ready.

I thought about Abigail's shallow breathing. About kneeling on my own floor. About Asher's hand on my neck and Francesca's shoes and the bond command that moved my body like I was something he owned.

I thought about the diary entry I'd found in Abigail's nightstand two days ago, folded small and written in her careful handwriting: *If my wolf ever goes silent, let me follow her. Never let a machine breathe for me.*

I pressed two fingers to my wrist.

Steady.

I typed my answer.

*I'm ready.*

Asher didn't notice. Of course he didn't.

He moved through the pack house with the same easy authority he always had, his attention on Francesca more than me, his wolf quiet in a way that should have worried him but didn't. He was too used to winning. Too used to me staying exactly where he put me.

But something shifted in him those last few days—small, unnameable, the kind of thing his wolf registered before his mind did.

He'd catch my scent in the hallway and pause, just for a second, like he was trying to place what had changed. Then he'd shake it off and keep walking.

Francesca noticed too, but differently.

She cornered me in the medical wing on Friday afternoon, her expression tight in a way that didn't match the gloating I'd seen three days ago.

"You're awfully calm," she said.

I looked up from the supply checklist I was holding. "Am I?"

"I sent you that recording. I thought—" She stopped herself, recalibrated. "Most wolves would have broken by now."

I set the clipboard down carefully. "Did you want me to break in a specific way? I can take notes."

Her jaw tightened. She stepped closer, and I smelled Asher on her again—layered, deliberate, the same scent I'd been breathing through the bond for three years.

"You should leave," she said quietly. "Before this gets worse for you."

I met her eyes. For the first time in three years, I let her see something real.

"I'm not going anywhere," I said.

It was true. I wasn't leaving.

I was dismantling everything, one photograph at a time, and then I was walking out the front door with my head up.

But she didn't need to know that yet.

Francesca left looking unsettled, and I returned to my checklist.

Sera laughed softly in the back of my mind.

*She's scared.*

Good. She should be.
