Chapter 1

The bond broke three days before I stopped fighting it.

I stood at Asher's side in the banquet hall, Luna mask perfectly in place, when Francesca walked in on his arm. Her floral scent hit me like a fist through the mate bond—layered, deliberate, soaked into his skin until my wolf couldn't tell where he ended and she began. My vision blurred. The mark on my neck pulsed hot, then cold, transmitting every molecule of her presence directly into my nervous system.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. Heartbeat steady. Breathing controlled. I was still standing.

The ranked wolves filled the hall—Betas, Gammas, Deltas in formal dress, all watching their Alpha with his preferred she-wolf while his actual Luna stood three feet away pretending not to smell what everyone could smell. I had done this before. I could do it again.

Except this time, I opened my mouth.

"Asher." My voice came out quiet, measured. "I'm asking you to consider a mutual rejection."

The hall didn't go silent. That would have required them to have been listening in the first place. But the wolves nearest us—Marcus, his Beta, and two Gammas—turned. I felt their attention like pressure on my skin.

Asher looked at me. Then he laughed.

Not a bitter laugh. Not even an angry one. Just dismissive, like I'd said something mildly amusing at an inconvenient time. He shook his head, smiled at Francesca, and turned back to me with the expression he used when correcting Omegas who'd missed a cleaning rotation.

"Caroline." His voice dropped into the register I knew too well. The Alpha tone wrapped around my spine before the words finished forming. "Sit down and smile."

My body obeyed.

I sat. My legs folded, my hands settled in my lap, my mouth curved into something that would photograph as pleasant. The bond command didn't ask. It didn't negotiate. It reached into my nervous system and moved me like a puppet on strings I couldn't see.

The hall resumed its noise. Conversations picked up. Someone laughed. Asher returned his attention to Francesca, his hand resting on the small of her back, and I sat in my chair at the head table with my Luna smile locked in place and my wolf screaming inside my skull.

Sera—my wolf—erupted.

She didn't howl. She didn't whimper. She *raged*. Her fury was so feral, so absolute, that my hands started trembling beneath the table. I flattened them against my thighs, pressed down hard, and shoved her back into the cage we'd both learned to live in.

*He used the command on his own mate,* she snarled. *In front of the pack. He made us sit like a dog.*

I know.

*Let me out. Let me—*

No.

I locked her down. It cost me. My healer's training cataloged the cost automatically: elevated heart rate, shallow breathing, fine tremor in both hands. Evidence. I was collecting evidence now, even if I didn't know yet what I'd use it for.

When I finally stood to refill Asher's goblet—because a Luna serves, because that's what I was here to do—my fingers shook just slightly as I poured. I set the pitcher down with care. No one noticed.

No one ever did.

That night, Francesca came to the Luna quarters.

She didn't knock. She walked in trailing satisfaction and Asher's scent like a flag she'd earned the right to carry. I was standing at the window, still in my banquet dress, when I heard the door.

"You looked pathetic tonight," she said.

I turned. She stood in my doorway, in my home, smiling.

"Sitting on command like that. In front of everyone." She tilted her head. "They all saw it, you know. The real Luna and the one who just… obeys."

I didn't move. Didn't speak. I had learned, over three years, that stillness unnerved people more than anger.

Francesca's smile widened. "It's only a matter of timing now. Once he's done with the formalities—"

"Get out."

She laughed. "Make me."

I couldn't. We both knew it. The bond command kept me inside Ironveil's borders, and Asher's authority kept me in this room, in this role, in this life. I had no leverage. No power. Nothing but the ability to stand very still and refuse to give her the reaction she wanted.

Then Asher walked in.

He looked at Francesca first. At me second. And I knew, in the space of that glance, exactly how this would go.

"She's being disrespectful," Francesca said, her voice softening into something that sounded almost hurt.

Asher's eyes stayed on me. He crossed the room in three strides, his hand closing around the left side of my neck—thumb pressing directly over the mating mark.

The mark burned. Not the good kind of burn. The kind that reminded me it was a brand.

"Kneel," he said quietly, "and apologize to Francesca. Right now. Or I stop all moonpetal shipments to Abigail's ward tonight."

Sera howled.

I knelt.

The floor was cold. Francesca's shoes were expensive—red-soled, polished. I looked at them instead of her face.

"I apologize," I said.

My voice didn't shake. I had practiced this too—keeping my voice steady when everything inside me was breaking.

Francesca smiled down at me. She'd rehearsed this moment. I could tell by the way she let the silence stretch, savoring it.

"Apology accepted," she said finally.

Asher released my neck. He left with Francesca, their footsteps fading down the hall, and I stayed kneeling on my own floor in my own home with the mating mark still burning under my skin.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I stood up, walked to Abigail's medical ward, and made a decision I should have made two years ago.

But first, I needed to see my sister.
