Chapter 3

Evan found me in the alliance hall three days before the banquet.

I was reviewing the seating arrangements—five hundred wolves, allied Alphas, pack elders, all positioned according to rank and diplomatic necessity—when he walked in. His scent hit me first. Pine and leather, still threaded with Lilian's musk. My wolf barely stirred. The bond that used to flare at his proximity felt distant now, like something happening in another room.

"Fiona," he said. His voice carried the Alpha authority that had commanded this pack for a decade. "We need to talk about the banquet."

I set down my tablet and looked at him. Really looked. The man I had recognized at sixteen. The wolf I had built an empire beside. He looked tired. There were shadows under his eyes that had not been there a month ago.

"What about it?" I asked. My tone was perfectly neutral.

He shifted his weight. Uncomfortable. "Lilian thinks—" He stopped. Started again. "She wants to attend. With me. Publicly."

I waited.

"I told her it's a pack-unity event," he continued. "That she'll attend in her Beta-assistant capacity. But she's..." He trailed off, searching for words that would not make him sound like exactly what he was.

"Persistent?" I offered.

His jaw tightened. "Yes."

I picked up my tablet again. Adjusted the seating chart. Moved Lilian's name to the administrative table, far from the Alpha's dais. "Then she attends in her capacity. Problem solved."

Evan stared at me. I could feel him trying to read my expression, searching for the crack he expected to find. Anger. Hurt. Some visible proof that his betrayal had landed.

I gave him nothing.

"Fiona," he said quietly. "Are we—are we going to talk about this?"

I met his eyes. "About what?"

The silence stretched. He looked away first.

"The seating arrangements are final," I said. "Unless you have other concerns?"

He shook his head slowly. Turned to leave. Stopped at the door. "You've been different lately."

"Have I?" I kept my voice mild.

"Quieter," he said. "More... controlled."

I smiled. It did not reach my eyes. "I'm a Luna, Evan. Control is part of the job."

He left without another word.

I returned to the seating chart and made one final adjustment. Moved my own name to the center of the dais. Right where everyone would see me when I stood to speak.

---

The Lycan Council's legal division confirmed receipt at four eighteen in the afternoon.

I was alone in my quarters when the encrypted message arrived. The preliminary pack-separation documentation had been filed, logged, and assigned a case number. The formal delivery to Evan's office was scheduled for the morning after my departure—timed precisely so he would receive it after I was already across Silvercrest's border, already beyond his authority to stop.

The document was flawless. I had spent two weeks building it with the same precision I had once used to negotiate territorial treaties. Bond violation grounds. Luna territorial detachment rights. Legal precedent from three similar cases in the last decade. Every clause airtight. Every argument uncontestable under pack law.

I read the confirmation twice. Then I deleted the message and cleared the encryption logs.

My wolf stirred. Not in pain. In something that felt almost like anticipation.

I walked to the window and looked out over the pack house grounds. The training fields were empty. The warrior barracks quiet. Everything looked exactly as it always had.

But beneath the surface, the architecture was already shifting. Supply caches positioned. Vehicles staged. Warriors briefed. The Moonveil Healer waiting.

Two more days.

I pressed my hand to the scar on my ribs and felt the ridge of tissue beneath my palm. The night I lost the pregnancy. The night my wolf began its slow deterioration. The night I learned that sacrifice without reciprocity is just another word for loss.

I had bled for this pack. I had bled for him.

I was done bleeding.

---

Lilian came to my office the next morning.

I was reviewing the final banquet logistics when she knocked. Two sharp raps. I did not look up.

"Come in."

She entered with the smooth confidence of someone who believed she was winning. Her hand rested on her belly—barely visible curve, but she made sure I saw it.

"Luna," she said. Her voice was pleasant. Professional. "I wanted to confirm the anniversary banquet protocol. My role as Beta-assistant."

"It's on the schedule," I said. Still not looking up. "Administrative table. Eastern section."

She moved closer. I could smell Evan on her. Fresh. Recent.

"I also wanted to ask," she continued, "about the Luna's private correspondence channels. I noticed some unusual encryption when I was running routine security checks. Is everything—"

"Everything is fine," I said. I set down my tablet and met her eyes. "Those channels are for alliance negotiations. Confidential. Above your clearance level."

Her smile did not waver. "Of course. I just wanted to make sure there were no security anomalies."

"There are none," I said. "Will that be all?"

She hesitated. I watched her calculate. Watched her try to decide if pushing further would give her information or just reveal how much she did not know.

"That's all," she said finally. "Thank you, Luna."

She left. I waited until her footsteps faded down the corridor. Then I pulled out my phone and sent a single message to Declan.

*She's watching. Accelerate the timeline if needed.*

His response came within seconds. *Understood. We're ready when you are.*

I deleted both messages. Returned to the banquet logistics.

The seating chart was perfect. The speeches prepared. The anniversary toast scheduled for exactly nine thirty, when the entire pack would be gathered, when every allied Alpha would be watching.

When I would stand before five hundred wolves and speak the words that would end everything.

I touched the scar on my ribs one last time.

Two more days.
