Chapter 4

The footage took me four hours to assemble.

I sat at my desk in the dark, the screen the only light in the room, and scrolled through months of security feeds frame by frame. Evan's office. The east corridor outside it. The private elevator that he and Lilian had used so confidently, never imagining that the woman who built the pack's security protocols would one day be the woman watching them.

I did not feel anything as I worked. That was the strange part. I had expected, somewhere beneath the composure, to find a reservoir of grief that would surface in private. But there was nothing. Just the precise, mechanical satisfaction of editing a record that could not be argued with.

Timestamps. Date overlays. Audio where the audio was clear. I cut nothing for cruelty. I cut nothing for restraint either. The final file ran twenty-three minutes. Every minute irrefutable.

I uploaded it to three encrypted servers. Configured the delivery protocol—pack council terminals, every allied Alpha's secure channel, simultaneous release at nine fifteen the morning after the banquet. By the time anyone in this house was awake enough to understand what had happened the night before, the footage would already be on every screen that mattered.

I tested the mechanism twice. Confirmed the timing. Then I closed the file and sat in the dark for a long time, listening to my own breathing.

My wolf was quiet. She had been quiet for days now, the way an animal goes quiet when it has accepted what is coming.

I touched the scar on my ribs once. Then I went to bed.

---

The evening before the banquet, I went out onto the balcony to watch the sun set over Silvercrest one last time.

The sky was the color of old copper. From here, I could see the eastern training fields where I had drilled warriors for ten years. The treaty hall where I had negotiated with three rival packs and walked out with our borders expanded each time. The river that curved past the pack house—the one I had insisted we build near, because my wolf needed running water to feel at home.

I did not hear Evan come up behind me. I felt him. The scent that had once meant everything, now meaning nothing. His hands settled on my shoulders, warm and familiar, the way they had a thousand times before.

"Ten years tomorrow," he said quietly.

I did not move.

"I was thinking about that gathering," he continued. His voice was low, threaded with something that almost sounded like wonder. "The diner. The rogue attack. You were sixteen and you fought like you'd been doing it your whole life."

I let him hold the moment. Let the breeze move between us. Let the sun continue its long slow descent.

"We built something extraordinary, Fi."

The nickname. He had not used it in months.

I did not turn around. I kept my eyes on the river.

"Yes," I said. "We built something extraordinary."

My voice was even. Steady. The past tense sat inside the sentence like a knife folded into silk, and he did not feel it. He did not feel anything. He squeezed my shoulders gently and rested his chin against the crown of my head, and I let him, because there was nothing he could take from me tonight that I had not already given away.

After a long moment, I lifted my hand and touched the back of his. Briefly. The way you touch a door you are closing.

Then I stepped out from under him and went inside.

"I have to finish a few things before tomorrow," I said over my shoulder.

"Of course," he said. He sounded almost dazed. "Of course."

I did not look back. I walked into my study, closed the door, and continued packing the small bag I would leave with—the things I refused to abandon: my mother's pendant, the encrypted tablet, the worn leather notebook where I had kept ten years of strategy notes in my own hand.

I did not pack a single photograph. There had never been any.

---

The morning of the banquet, Declan met me in the private combat ring at first light.

The other eleven were positioned exactly where they should be—two with the convoy vehicles staged at the western boundary, three handling supply verification, six rotating through their normal duties so as not to draw attention. Declan walked me through every detail in his measured, unhurried voice.

"Vehicles fueled, comm gear tested, blackout protocols confirmed," he said. "Moonveil's Healer sent verification at four this morning. They will be ready when you arrive."

I nodded.

We stood for a moment in the empty ring. The light was thin and gray, the kind of light that does not flatter anyone.

Declan looked at me. He had served under me for nine years. He had seen every version of me this pack had produced.

"Luna," he said quietly. "Are you all right?"

I considered the question.

I thought about the scar beneath my gown. The wolf going quiet inside me. The ten years stacked behind my eyes like a city I had built and was about to leave burning.

"I will be," I said.

It was the most honest sentence I had spoken in months.

Declan nodded once. He did not ask anything else.

We walked back toward the pack house together, and the sun came up over Silvercrest for the last time I would ever see it.
