After My Alpha Sacrificed Me for His Mistress Chapter 1

The beam came down at 3:47 in the afternoon, and I heard my own scream before I felt the fire.

I was still at the altar when it happened. My hand was lifted, ready for Archer's — the incomplete mark on my neck already pulsing hot, the way it had at the last two ceremonies before everything went wrong. Through the mind-link I felt his attention twitch away from me. A pull, like a compass needle jerking toward true north. And true north was Elliana Shaw, standing at the edge of the ritual clearing, one hand pressed to her temple.

Her scream cut the air first.

The pavilion doors slammed shut a half-second after. From the outside. I heard the bolt drop.

Then the rogue howl broke through the tree line at the exact same moment, and the timing of it — the precision — hit me like a second blow before the fire did. Nothing that clean was chance.

The pavilion caught fast. Silver-laced smoke, the ceremonial kind meant to seal a bond, coiled black instead of silver. A support beam cracked overhead. I threw my arm up. It came down anyway.

Heat crushed my forearm to the floor. My collarbone hissed where a scatter of embers landed and stayed. The smell of my own skin cooking is a smell I will carry for the rest of my life.

I screamed into the mind-link. *Archer.*

Static. Then his voice, threaded through the noise — not to me. To someone else. To Silas.

"Get the healer to Elliana. Now."

"Alpha, Bria is —"

"Elliana first." A pause. Low, urgent, meant only for his Beta. "She barred the doors, Silas. To keep Bria from running. I knew. I knew and I let her."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not slowly. All at once. Like a door closing in an empty room. Like a hand lifting off a shoulder that had never really been held. My wolf — the one I had waited my whole life to hear — folded inward somewhere behind my ribs and made no sound at all.

I stopped screaming. There was no point.

—

Silas's patrol pulled me out. Not Archer. I remember the shape of Silas's face above mine, tight and unreadable, and I remember thinking, *he heard it too.*

The infirmary smelled like antiseptic and burned cloth. They cut the ceremony gown off me in strips. The healer worked in silence, her hands quick over the silver-laced burns down my left forearm and across my collarbone. I did not flinch. I lay flat and pressed one finger to the mark on my neck and waited for it to answer.

It did not answer.

I asked for Barnaby. An Omega I did not know the name of — a small woman with careful eyes — brought him in and set him on the cot beside me. He pushed his head under my hand. His fur smelled like grass and sun. I held him and did not cry, because crying required something the fire had already burned out of me.

Beyond the door, Archer's voice.

"Her tremors — are they responding?"

"The dosage is holding, Alpha."

"And the frequency? Overnight?"

"Slightly elevated. We'll monitor."

A pause. Then, almost as an afterthought: "And the Williamson girl. Settled enough not to cause further disruption?"

My hand stopped moving on Barnaby's back.

The Williamson girl.

I pressed my palm flat to the mark on my neck. The skin there felt like someone else's skin. Cold. Numb. A patch of dead territory on my own body.

I did not answer. I did not need to.

—

Three days later I walked into the hallway on my own feet, bandages still on, and I found him by the tall window that faced the moonflower garden — the garden my grandmother had planted a lifetime ago, the one he had somehow always kept alive without ever once saying my name over it.

"You told Silas she barred the doors," I said. My voice was quiet. "You said you knew. You said, *I knew, Silas, I knew.* And you sent the healer to her first."

Archer's jaw locked.

"Bria."

"Word for word. That is what you said."

"Stop." His shoulders squared. The Alpha tone rolled down into his voice like a stone settling in a riverbed. "Stop making this harder. Elliana's condition is fragile. You don't understand the complexity —"

I waited.

I waited for the pull under my skin. For the drop of the head, the softening of the knees, the involuntary yielding that his tone had always drawn out of me since the first time we stood in the same room.

Nothing came.

The mark on my neck was a severed wire. His authority had nowhere to land.

I looked at him. Really looked. His mouth was tight, his eyes still holding some version of the argument he thought he was going to win. I held his gaze for one long silent count, and I watched the moment he understood that I felt nothing.

Then I turned around.

I took Barnaby's leash off the hook by the door. I clipped it on. I walked out of the Silverfang pack house, down the drive, past the wards, and across the territory line without looking back.

Behind me, at the window facing the moonflower garden, I heard him breathe in once, hard.

He did not follow.

With Lily's body still warm on the bed, Jaimen looked at me with pure disgust and severed our mate bond. "I reject you. Get this trash out of my territory." I was dragged out to the borderlands and beaten to death in the mud, clutching a cheap locket, while he celebrated saving his "heir." He didn't know the truth. The results showed zero match to the Alpha line, but a perfect match to a filthy Rogue. That night, the Alpha went mad. And I watched from the afterlife as he slaughtered everyone involved, begging a ghost for forgiveness that would never come.
