Chapter 2

The words left my mouth before I decided to say them.

"I, Lilian Voss, accept this rejection."

My voice didn't shake. I hadn't expected that. Three hundred wolves heard every syllable.

The bond snapped.

Not gradually. Not like something worn thin finally giving way. It snapped the way a bone does—one instant whole, the next instant nothing. The cold mark on my neck went from ice to void, and the void was so complete, so absolute, that my body didn't know what to do with the absence.

Then the heat came.

It started in my spine. A pressure so violent I couldn't stay standing—my knees hit the floor, and I heard gasps from the crowd, heard Paige say something sharp and triumphant from Arthur's side, but the sound was already going distant. The heat was consuming everything. It moved through my bones like fire finding dry wood, and my bones were answering it, cracking and reshaping before I could understand what was happening.

Something tore through my skin. Silver.

I looked at my hands. Fur was spreading across my knuckles, up my forearms, luminous and pale as moonlight. My fingers elongated. My spine arched backward with a crack that should have been agony and was—but beneath the agony was something else. Something enormous. Something that had been pressed down for seventeen years under the weight of wolfsbane and silence and the daily, grinding certainty that I was broken.

It was done being pressed down.

The shift took me completely.

I heard screaming. I heard chairs overturning, the crash of a candelabra, three hundred wolves scrambling backward in the same instant. I heard Arthur's voice—"What is—"—cut off mid-sentence.

Then I was standing.

I didn't know how large I was until I saw Arthur's face at eye level and he was standing two steps away. He hadn't chosen to step back. His legs had simply stopped holding him. He was on his knees, and his eyes were wide, and his wolf—the Alpha wolf that had commanded this hall for years—was making a sound I had never heard from it before. Small. Trembling. Submissive.

The aura moved through the room like a wave breaking. I felt it leave me, felt it roll outward, and I watched it reach the crowd the way you watch a stone hit still water. Row by row. Wolf by wolf. Knees hitting the floor, throats tilting back, three hundred wolves baring the vulnerable lines of their necks to something their bodies recognized even if their minds hadn't caught up.

Paige was on the ground beside Arthur. Her silk dress pooled around her. The composure she had worn like armor for three years was gone. Her hands were pressed flat against the floor, and she was shaking.

The visiting Alphas—men and women who led packs across three territories, who had walked into this hall tonight as peers—were on their knees with their chins raised. Not one of them had chosen it.

The hall was silent except for breathing. Three hundred wolves, breathing in submission.

A voice inside me spoke for the first time. Steady. Ancient. Certain.

*Selene*, I thought, and she answered without words—just a warmth, a recognition, a sense of something finally home.

The doors slammed open.

The sound cracked through the silence like a gunshot. Cold air swept in from the entrance, and then footsteps—measured, unhurried, carrying the particular weight of someone who has never needed to announce himself.

He walked through the doors with twelve wolves behind him in formation. Their combined aura hit the room like a second wave, layering over mine, and the wolves already on their knees pressed lower. But the man at the front wasn't looking at the crowd.

He was looking at me.

He stopped walking. His chest rose once, sharply, as he inhaled. Something crossed his face—something I didn't have a name for, something that cracked the formal composure wide open for just a moment before it sealed again.

When he spoke, his voice filled every corner of the hall.

"She is Lilian Voss. Princess of the Lycan bloodline. Stolen from my house seventeen years ago."

The silence after those words was different from the silence before them. This one had weight.

I looked at Arthur. I don't know why. Some reflex, some last remnant of three years. His face was the color of ash. His mouth was open. The Alpha aura he had always worn so easily was entirely absent—what was left was just a man on his knees, staring at the thing he had thrown away.

I looked away.

The Lycan King crossed the hall. He stopped in front of me and extended his hand. His eyes were dark, and they were steady, and somewhere in them was seventeen years of something he hadn't let himself feel until this moment.

I shifted back. My bones reset. The silver fur receded. I was standing in the ruins of the dress I'd worn for the ceremony, and Selene was humming low and fierce inside me, and my legs were solid beneath me.

I took his hand.

We walked out. The crowd parted without being asked. I kept my eyes forward, my chin level, my steps even.

I didn't look at Arthur once.
