Chapter 3

The convoy moved through the dark without stopping.

I sat with my back against the armored door and watched the trees blur past the tinted window. Black pines. Empty road. The occasional flash of a guard vehicle's headlights in the side mirror. Twelve royal wolves surrounding us, and not one of them had said a word to me since we left Ironridge.

Dominic sat across from me. He hadn't spoken either. He'd simply placed a blanket over my lap somewhere around the first hour, and when one of his guards tried to brief him on something, he'd raised one hand and the guard had gone silent and retreated to the front of the vehicle. That was it. No questions. No explanations. Just the quiet, and the road, and the steady presence of a man I didn't know who shared my blood.

I kept my hand pressed to my neck.

The mark was gone. Not healed—gone. Where Arthur's incomplete bond had sat for three years, there was nothing. Not cold anymore. Not hollow. Just smooth skin, as if it had never existed at all. I pressed harder, like I was checking a wound, and felt nothing.

I stared out the window.

Sometime after midnight, the convoy pulled into a waystation. Dominic said something quiet to a guard. I was shown to a small room—clean, plain, a narrow bed and a lamp and a window that looked out onto gravel and dark sky. Someone brought food. I ate without tasting it.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed, and the silence settled around me, and that was when she spoke.

The voice was low. Fierce. Unmistakably mine, and yet not mine at all.

*Hello, Lilian.*

I went completely still.

*My name is Selene.*

I had heard about this. Every wolf talked about the first time. The moment of recognition, the name, the sense of something vast and living inside you finally making itself known. I had spent seventeen years believing it would never happen to me.

"Selene," I said aloud. My voice came out barely above a whisper.

A warmth answered. Not words—just warmth, and something that felt like recognition, like the particular feeling of finding a room in your own house you didn't know was there.

Then the warmth sharpened into something else.

*Three years,* she said. *He knew. He knew what they were doing to us and he said nothing.*

The fury in her voice was so clean and absolute that it knocked the breath out of me.

"You've been here the whole time?" I asked.

*The whole time.*

"Since—" I stopped. Started again. "Since I was an infant?"

*They buried me. But I was always here. Every time you were cold and they didn't care. Every time he looked past you. Every time that woman laughed.* A pause. *I was here.*

I pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes. My chest was doing something complicated—grief and rage and something else I couldn't name, something that felt almost like relief. Like the answer to a question I'd been asking my whole life had finally arrived, and it was devastating, and I was grateful for it anyway.

"Why tonight?" I asked. "Why not before?"

*Because tonight you had nothing left to lose.* Her voice was quieter now. *The bond breaking—the pain of it—it was enough to crack what they built around me. I have been waiting for a door. That was a door.*

I sat with that for a long time.

Outside, I could hear the guards rotating shifts. Boots on gravel. Low voices. The ordinary sounds of people doing their jobs in the dark, completely unaware that inside this small room, something that had been stolen seventeen years ago was slowly finding its shape again.

*Sleep,* Selene said eventually. *We have time now.*

I lay back on the narrow bed and stared at the ceiling and did not sleep for a very long time.

In the morning, Dominic was already at the table when I came out. Coffee, bread, something warm in a covered dish. He stood when I entered—a formality that caught me off guard—and waited until I sat before he sat.

We ate in silence for a few minutes. It wasn't uncomfortable, exactly. It was careful. Two people measuring the distance between them and neither one certain how to cross it.

Then he reached into his coat and placed something on the table between us.

A small portrait. Oil paint on wood, worn smooth at the edges from handling. An infant with silver-cast hair and dark eyes, sleeping.

I looked at it without touching it.

"It has been on my writing desk," Dominic said, "every day since you were taken."

His voice was even. He wasn't asking me to feel anything about it. He was just telling me it existed. That was all.

I stared at the portrait. The infant's face was round and unformed, the way all infants are, but the hair—the particular silver cast of it—

"How did you know to come last night?" I asked.

"Bloodline resonance." He folded his hands on the table. "A Lycan King can feel the awakening of his own blood. Distance doesn't matter." He paused. "I felt you before I knew where you were. I have been moving toward you for seventeen years, Lilian. Last night was simply the first time the distance closed."

Something cracked inside my chest. Not breaking—more like a door giving way under pressure that had been building for longer than I could account for.

I reached out and picked up the portrait. Carefully. The wood was warm from his coat. I held it with both hands and looked at the infant's face and tried to understand that this was me, that someone had kept this, that for seventeen years while I was learning to make myself small enough to survive, this had been sitting on a desk somewhere.

I didn't weep. I wasn't ready to weep.

But I held the portrait for a long time, and Dominic didn't ask for it back, and outside the window the morning was grey and cold and the road ahead was very long.
