After My Alpha Rejected Me, I Awakened as Lycan Chapter 1

The mark went cold at 8:47, half a second before Elijah even opened his mouth.

I felt it happen through the bond — a door closing somewhere inside my own chest, quiet and final, before a single word left him. I had spent the whole day on my knees scrubbing the banquet hall's stone floor at Vivienne's command, plating venison, stringing pine boughs, while Cali lounged in the guest wing in the ivory gown Vivienne herself had chosen. Now I stood at the edge of the hall in my plain gray dress, and the cold spreading from my collarbone told me everything before Elijah's Alpha tone rolled out over three hundred bowed heads.

"I, Elijah Ellis, Alpha of the Ironclaw Pack," he said, and the words hit the rafters, hit every corner of the hall, hit me last of all, "reject you, Elle Ward, as my mate and Luna."

The bond didn't break. It tore. Silver wire dragged through my ribs, my knees, the base of my throat, and my body folded before I told it to. Stone floor. Cold air. Somewhere above me, fabric rustled — Cali stepping out from behind a pillar, sliding her hand into the crook of Elijah's arm like she'd rehearsed the exact angle of her smile. At the head table, Vivienne watched with the settled satisfaction of a woman collecting a debt three years overdue.

Cali lifted a goblet. I saw the wine's color before I understood what it was — a wrongness in the smell, bitter root beneath the grape — and then it arced through the air and soaked the front of my dress, my only decent garment, dark and spreading like a wound. Nobody in that hall made a sound.

"Get her out," Elijah said, alpha tone snapping down over the room like a lid, and two Deltas moved toward me.

I pushed up onto my knees before their hands reached me. My whole body was screaming, but I made my spine straight, made my chin lift, and I found Elijah's eyes across that ocean of silent wolves.

"I accept your rejection," I said. My voice came out cracked, like glass dragged over glass, but it carried.

The bond went dark completely then — no ache, no phantom thread, just absence. And underneath that absence, low in my bones where nothing had ever lived before, something turned over. Not a whimper. A growl, ancient and furious, felt by no one but me. I let the Deltas walk me out. I did not cry. I did not look back.

They put me in the cold storage room for the night, among hanging meat and frost-rimed shelves. Vivienne came at dawn, heels sharp on the concrete, holding a folder and a pen like a queen delivering an execution order.

"You'll sign the Accord dissolution," she said, setting it on the crate beside me without ceremony. "Relinquish all claims. Be gone by sundown." Her mouth curved, the closest thing to warmth she'd ever shown me. "It's better this way, Elle. You were never built for this life."

I read every clause. My hands still trembled from the severance, but I made myself go slow, line by line, while she stood over me with visible impatience.

Then I signed.

Her smirk deepened — she thought it was surrender. She had no idea what she'd just handed back to me. I folded my copy small and tucked it into the lining of my coat, against my ribs, where the growl still lived.

Before the gates, I took the long way, down through the lower corridor I had scrubbed every week for three years. The loose stone was exactly where I'd left it. I pried it up.

The vial I'd planted — the fabricated serum, my quiet test of their loyalty — was gone. In its place, a folded note in Vivienne's tight handwriting: dosage measurements, injection intervals, a timeline. They hadn't hesitated. They hadn't even questioned it.

I slid the note in beside the Accord, against my ribs, against the growl.

The gates of the Ironclaw pack house stood open, frost silvering the iron bars. I walked through them with nothing but a stained dress and a coat lining that held two pieces of paper — enough, I thought, to bring the whole house down. Behind me, through the walls, I heard Elijah's voice rise in another room, giving some order to the Deltas about tonight's coronation gifts for Cali. I didn't slow down. I didn't turn around.
