Chapter 2

By the second morning after the vow, I could feel it.

Not through the bond — that was gone, cold and sealed like scar tissue over a wound. I felt it the way a Healer feels a patient deteriorating from across the room. A shift in the air. A quality of presence beginning to thin.

Cayson's wolf was stumbling.

I was at my workbench when the training drill started outside. I could hear it through the den's narrow window — the Deltas assembling on the eastern field, the familiar bark of his command voice carrying across the yard. Except it wasn't quite right. There was a catch in it, a roughness that didn't belong there, like a note played on a string that's starting to fray.

I set down my measuring spoon and listened.

Silence. Then the early dismissal order. Then boots on gravel, too soon, the session cutting off a full hour before schedule.

I picked the spoon back up.

The runner arrived twenty minutes later — a young Delta, barely seventeen, who had the decency to look uncomfortable about his errand. He held out a folded note with both hands.

"The Alpha requests his morning tonic, Luna — " He caught himself. "Miss Wells."

I read the note. Cayson's handwriting, controlled and even, asking for the stabilizing compound I'd been brewing for his wolf for the better part of a decade. The same one I'd removed from his supply two nights ago without a word of explanation.

I tore a sheet from my prescription pad, wrote four words in Healer's shorthand, folded it, and handed it back.

"Thank you," I said.

The boy left. I returned to my samples.

The note said: *No active prescription on file for this patient.*

---

The eviction was simpler than I expected.

I found out about the lodge before breakfast — one of the kitchen Omegas mentioned it in passing, not even gossiping, just noting that the eastern woodland path was blocked by luggage carts. I set down my tea and went to the pack archive.

The bloodline deed was exactly where I knew it would be, filed under my mother's name in the oldest section of the charter records. Maren Wells, gifted to Ironcrest Pack under the condition that occupancy of the eastern woodland lodge be restricted to the Luna's household in perpetuity. My mother's signature at the bottom, and beside it the pack seal, and beside that the date — twenty-three years ago, before I was even marked.

I read it twice. Not because I needed to. Because I wanted to be precise.

I sent three Deltas with the documentation and a single verbal instruction: follow the deed's terms to the letter.

I was back at my workbench by the time Iyla's belongings were being carried out.

Cayson reached the archive room around midday, based on the sound of it — raised voice, then a longer silence that told me he'd actually read the terms, then footsteps going nowhere in particular. I heard him twice in the corridor outside the den. He didn't knock.

The lodge stood empty by afternoon. The pack's whispers had a new edge to them, something sharper than before, the kind that happens when people start revising what they thought they understood.

---

Iyla found me in the corridor just before the evening rounds.

She had positioned herself well — directly in the center of the hallway, one hand resting on the curve of her belly, the other braced lightly on the wall. Blocking without appearing to block. It was a calculated posture, and she'd practiced it.

"You know he rejected you," she said, her voice warm and almost gentle. "In front of everyone. That means you're not Luna anymore. You're not anything here." She tilted her head. "You should vacate the Healer's den the same way you vacated his life. It's not yours."

She let that land. Then she lowered her voice, and the sweetness in it thinned just enough to show the blade underneath.

"He needs an heir. He's always needed one. And you —" Her eyes dropped briefly, deliberately. "You couldn't give him that. I can."

She smiled. Waited.

I looked at her for a moment. Not at her face — at her. The way I look at a wound to determine what's actually inside it.

Then I stepped around her and opened the Healer's den door.

"Good evening, Iyla," I said.

I closed the door. Softly. The click of the latch was the quietest sound in the building.

I crossed to my desk, unlocked the case beside my private ledger, and opened it to the current page. I wrote the date. The time. Then a single entry: *Iyla Tucker — apprenticeship credentials, cross-reference guild pressure correspondence, file ref. 7-C, dated two years prior.*

I capped the pen and set it down.

She thought I was erasing myself. She didn't understand that I had been building a case for two years, and that tonight she had just added herself to it.
