Chapter 3

The stirring began three days after the rejection vow.

I was grinding wolfsbane residue into powder when I felt it — a low vibration behind my sternum, like something tapping against bone from the inside. I set down the mortar and pressed my palm flat against my chest, waiting.

It came again. Stronger this time. Not pain. Pressure.

My wolf.

I hadn't heard her voice in so long I'd stopped listening for it. The suppressants Cayson had ordered into my salves — diluted so gradually I hadn't noticed the shift — had pushed her so far down I'd almost forgotten what it felt like to share my own body. But the tonics were gone now. The suppressants were metabolizing out. And she was waking up.

*He caged us both,* she said.

Her voice sounded like my mother's. Low and even, with an edge underneath that I recognized because it matched the one in my own throat.

I sat very still and let the sensation move through me. My wolf didn't push for a shift — couldn't yet, the chemicals still working their way out of my system — but I could feel her fury clearly for the first time in a decade. It wasn't wild. It was cold. Focused. The same precision I'd been using to dismantle Cayson piece by piece, except hers had teeth.

I looked down at the wolfsbane powder in the mortar. My hands were steady.

"I know," I said aloud.

She didn't answer. She didn't need to. We understood each other now.

I returned to my samples.

---

Torren came at dusk.

I heard his boots in the corridor before he knocked — the measured, deliberate pace of a man who has rehearsed what he's about to say and knows he can't afford to hesitate once he starts. He stood in the doorway with his hands clasped behind his back, shoulders square, eyes forward. A soldier's posture. A confession's posture.

"Miss Wells," he said. "May I speak plainly?"

I set down the vial I was labeling and turned to face him. "You may."

He didn't sit. He didn't move from the threshold. He just spoke, and his voice was rough in a way I'd never heard before.

"The pack mind-link went dark at 11:47 on Thursday night. I had six warriors with extraction gear ready to deploy. We stood on that ridge for forty-three minutes with ropes in our hands and watched the elders bleed out because pack law tied us to a link that wasn't there." He paused. His jaw worked. "All six will testify to that. We need to know if you're preparing for a burial rite, because we need to know where to stand."

I looked at him. Really looked. The guilt in his face wasn't performative. It was structural. The kind that changes a man's spine.

"The rite is being arranged," I said quietly. "I would like you to stand at the front."

Something in his shoulders released. Not relief. Permission.

"Yes, Luna," he said.

I didn't correct him. He left before I could.

I turned back to my workbench and added a note to the file I was building: *Gamma testimony — ridge collapse timeline, witness corroboration, pack law violation documented.*

The case was getting heavier. Good.

---

Cayson came the next afternoon.

He framed it as pack business. A Gamma's injury requiring Healer assessment. He positioned himself in the examination room with the same practiced authority he'd always used, settling into the chair like it was a throne, waiting for the familiar dynamic to reassert itself.

I entered with my medical ledger and a clean pair of gloves.

"Which Gamma is injured?" I asked.

His composure cracked. Just a hairline fracture, but I saw it.

"It's —" He stopped. Started again. "It's me. My wolf. Something is wrong with my aura."

I set the ledger on the counter and pulled on the gloves. "Describe the symptoms."

He looked at me like I'd asked him to describe breathing. "It's… weaker. Unstable. I can't hold a shift as long. The training drills are harder than they should be."

I nodded and made a note. "How long has this been occurring?"

"Since —" He caught himself. "A few days."

"Since the rejection vow," I said. Not a question.

He didn't answer.

I examined him the way I examine any patient. I checked his pulse. His temperature. The responsiveness of his wolf through the faint shimmer of his aura. I documented everything in the medical record with the same clinical detachment I'd use for a stranger.

When I was finished, I capped my pen and handed him the ledger.

"Your wolf is experiencing withdrawal from a long-term stabilizing compound," I said. "The symptoms you're describing are consistent with the metabolic adjustment period. Recovery will require time and rest."

He stared at the page. Then at me.

"Seraphina —"

"Miss Wells," I corrected.

His jaw tightened. "I need the prescription."

"There is no active prescription on file for this patient," I said. "If you'd like to request a new one, you'll need to submit a formal application through the crown Healer's guild for review."

I walked to the door and opened it.

He stood slowly. His hands were shaking. Not much. Just enough.

"You're doing this on purpose," he said.

I met his eyes. "I'm following protocol, Alpha. The same protocol you've always insisted on."

He left without another word.

I closed the door behind him and returned to my workbench. My wolf stirred again, a low rumble of satisfaction that I felt in my ribs.

*Good,* she said.

I picked up my pen and added the medical consultation to the file. Documented. Witnessed. Precise.

The cage was opening. And I was the one holding the key.
