Chapter 3

Hailey came for me on the fifth morning.

Not in person. She sent two Gamma warriors—Cara and Jen, the same ones who'd delivered poisoned tea to Lena Marsh. They stood in the doorway of the Omega quarters, arms crossed, expressions blank.

"Pack your things," Cara said. "You're being moved."

I didn't ask where. Didn't argue. I folded the thin blanket on the cot, tucked my mother's token deeper into my sleeve, and followed them across the compound.

The new quarters sat at the eastern edge of the territory. Farther from the pack hall. Farther from the training grounds. Close enough to the boundary line that I could see the tree line through the single window.

Cara opened the door. "Omega protocol," she said flatly. "Lower ranks sleep closer to the perimeter. You'll stay here until the Alpha decides otherwise."

Jen stepped past me into the room, pulled a small device from her pocket, and pressed something on its side. A faint click. She set it on the narrow shelf by the door.

"Your mind-link access has been revoked," Jen said. "Standard procedure for Omegas without active pack duties. If you need something, you report to the Omega coordinator in person."

I looked at the device. A signal blocker. Crude but effective. It would cut me off from the pack's shared mental network entirely.

Cara smirked. "Luna's orders. She said it's for your own good. Less noise in your head while you adjust to your new role."

They left without waiting for a response.

I stood in the center of the room. Smaller than the last one. Colder. The window faced east, toward the unguarded stretch of forest where Ironveil's territory met the rogue routes.

I walked to the window. Pressed my palm against the glass.

Thirty meters. Maybe less. Close enough that I could smell the tree line if the wind shifted.

Close enough that I could smell anything crossing it.

Hailey thought she was isolating me. She thought she was cutting me off, making me smaller, easier to forget.

She'd just put me exactly where I needed to be.

I touched my mother's token through my sleeve and allowed myself the smallest flicker of satisfaction.

That night, Dominic hosted the visiting Alphas.

I wasn't invited. Omegas didn't attend formal pack dinners unless they were serving. I was assigned to the Omega table at the far end of the hall—out of sight, out of mind, close enough to the kitchen that I could refill water pitchers without disrupting the ranked wolves' conversations.

The hall was full. Alphas from three neighboring territories sat at the high table with Dominic and Hailey. Betas and Gammas filled the rows below. The air smelled like roasted meat and ambition.

Hailey presided at Dominic's right hand, draped in the Luna's ceremonial mantle. She laughed at the right moments. Touched his arm with perfect timing. Played the role like she'd been born to it.

I filled water glasses. Kept my head down. Listened.

Dominic was talking about Ironveil's defensive record. His voice carried across the hall, smooth and certain.

"We haven't had a successful rogue incursion in three years," he said. "Our border patrols operate on a rotating schedule—three shifts, staggered entry points, overlapping coverage zones. It's a system I developed during my first year as Alpha."

I set a pitcher down on the Omega table without making a sound.

That rotation schedule. I'd written it. In my second year. I'd handed it to Dominic on a folded piece of paper during a strategy session, told him it would cover the weak points in the northern perimeter. He'd nodded, filed it away, and two weeks later presented it to the Gammas as his own design.

I'd never said a word.

I glanced toward the high table. Marcus Reid, the Gamma commander, sat three seats down from Dominic. His jaw was tight. His hand rested on the table, fingers drumming once, twice, then going still.

He knew.

Maybe not all of it. Maybe not yet. But something in Dominic's voice—the cadence, the phrasing, the way he described the rotation—had triggered recognition.

I picked up the empty pitcher and walked back to the kitchen.

Behind me, Dominic's voice rose again, describing another strategy, another victory, another piece of Ironveil's legendary strength.

All mine. Every word.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and kept walking.

The scent woke me just after midnight.

Sharp. Chemical. Fresh.

Wolfsbane.

I sat up on the cot, every sense snapping into focus. The window was cracked open—I'd left it that way deliberately, testing the air currents, learning the patterns of scent that drifted in from the boundary.

This wasn't residual. This was active. Recently handled.

I moved to the window.

The tree line was dark, but my eyes adjusted quickly. Thirty meters out, two figures. One standing just inside Ironveil's boundary. One standing just outside it, half-hidden in shadow.

The one inside was Omega-ranked. Male. I recognized him from the pack hall—one of Hailey's loyalists, the kind of wolf who did what he was told without asking questions.

The one outside was rogue. I could tell by the way he moved—no pack discipline, no formal posture. And by his scent. Faint from this distance, but unmistakable. Rogue-territory marker. Eastern routes. The same signature I'd tracked for years while maintaining the ward's outer perimeter.

They exchanged something. A small parcel, wrapped in cloth. The Omega took it, tucked it under his arm, and turned back toward the compound.

Toward Hailey's private quarters.

I watched him go. Noted his gait. The way he kept to the shadows. The route he took—deliberate, practiced. He'd done this before.

The rogue courier melted back into the trees.

I stayed at the window for another ten minutes. Let the scent signature settle into my memory. Cataloged every detail.

Live supply chain. Courier scent. Delivery date.

I had it all now.

I didn't move to intercept. Didn't alert anyone. Didn't do anything that would tip Hailey off that I was watching.

I just stood there, my mother's token warm against my wrist, and waited.

The bond was gone. The mark was cold. But something else was stirring now.

Deep. Patient. Inevitable.

I returned to the cot. Lay down. Closed my eyes.

And I smiled.
