Chapter 4

The training ground smelled like sweat and dirt and the particular kind of tension that came from ranked wolves trying to impress visiting Alphas. I stood at the edge of the field, a rake in my hands, waiting.

Marcus Reid stood twenty feet away, arms crossed, watching his Gamma warriors run drills. He was good at his job. Disciplined. Precise. The kind of commander who noticed when formations were off by half a step.

I'd been counting on that.

I waited until the drill rotation paused. Until Marcus turned toward the equipment shed. Then I stepped forward.

"Gamma Reid," I said quietly.

He stopped. Looked at me. Not with hostility. Just the reflexive dismissal of a ranked wolf acknowledging an Omega who'd spoken without being addressed first.

"What is it?" His tone was neutral. Efficient.

"I'm requesting reassignment," I said. "From the administrative annex to outdoor maintenance. I'd prefer to work outside."

It was plausible. Omegas requested reassignments all the time. Usually to avoid other wolves, or because indoor work didn't suit them. No one questioned it.

Marcus frowned slightly. "That's not my jurisdiction. Take it to the Omega coordinator."

"I did," I said. "She told me to clear it with you first. Since outdoor maintenance reports to the Gamma division."

A lie. But a small one. And Marcus wouldn't bother verifying it.

He sighed. "Fine. Report to the groundskeeper tomorrow morning."

I nodded. Started to turn away. Then paused.

"The eastern perimeter patrol," I said. Casual. Like an afterthought. "The rotation schedule—does it still use the staggered entry points with the overlapping coverage zones? Or did you adjust the timing after the Alpha extended the northern boundary last year?"

Marcus went still.

Not dramatically. Just a half-second pause. His eyes moved to my face.

"Why are you asking?"

"I'll be working near the eastern edge," I said. "I wanted to know the patrol patterns. So I don't get in the way."

His jaw tightened. "The rotation hasn't changed."

I nodded once. "Good to know. Thank you, Gamma."

I walked away before he could ask anything else.

Behind me, I felt his gaze follow me across the field. Not dismissive anymore. Something else.

Recognition.

The staggered entry points with overlapping coverage zones. That phrasing. That specific technical detail. Only someone who'd designed the original formation would phrase it that way. Marcus had spent two years implementing that rotation. He'd memorized it. Drilled it into his warriors.

And he'd just heard an Omega describe it in the exact cadence and terminology of the original tactical brief.

I didn't look back. Didn't push. I'd planted the seed. That was enough.

For now.

Dominic's office smelled like leather and old wood and the faint chemical undertone of wolfsbane that clung to everything in this compound now that I knew what to look for.

Two Gamma warriors flanked the door. Cara and Jen. Hailey's loyalists. They didn't speak. Just stood there, arms crossed, a silent reminder that I was here under escort.

Dominic sat behind his desk, a single document spread in front of him. He didn't look up when I entered.

"Sit," he said.

I stayed standing.

He glanced up. His eyes narrowed. "I said sit."

I sat.

He pushed the document across the desk toward me. "Your mother's territory. The renunciation form. I need your signature."

I looked at the paper. Clean. Formal. Legal.

"You said I had until the next full moon," I said quietly.

"The timeline's changed," Dominic replied. "The visiting Alphas are interested in a formal territory expansion announcement. I want this finalized before they leave. You have forty-eight hours."

I picked up the document. Read it slowly. Every line. Every clause. I was a tactician. I read everything.

Dominic watched me with the expression of a man who expected compliance. Who'd never once been told no by someone he'd already categorized as beneath him.

I set the paper back on the desk. Unsigned.

"I'll need the pack healer's confirmation that the land transfer is medically advisable for my recovery from the rejection," I said. My voice was level. Precise. "Pack law allows a rejected mate forty-eight hours to consult the healer before signing any asset transfer."

Dominic's jaw tightened. "That's an obscure provision."

"It's real," I said.

Behind me, Cara shifted her weight. Dominic's eyes flicked to her, then back to me.

He leaned back in his chair. "Fine. Forty-eight hours. Then you sign."

I stood. Walked to the door.

"Elena," he said.

I stopped. Didn't turn.

"As a wolfless Omega with no pack standing, you have no legal right to retain a bloodline land claim. Signing will simplify things for everyone."

I touched my mother's token through my sleeve. Felt its worn surface beneath my fingers.

Then I walked out.

The pack healer's clinic sat at the southern edge of the compound. Quiet. Professional. The kind of place where wolves went when they needed something documented.

The healer looked up when I entered. An older she-wolf. Gray at the temples. Eyes that had seen too much and said too little.

"Elena," she said. Not a question. She'd been expecting me.

"I need a consultation," I said. "About the rejection. And the territorial renunciation Dominic wants me to sign."

She gestured to the chair across from her desk. I sat.

She asked the standard questions. How I was feeling. Whether the bond severance had caused any physical complications. Whether I was experiencing prolonged pain or disorientation.

I answered honestly. The bond was gone. The mark was cold. But I was stable.

She made notes. Sealed them in a file.

Then I leaned forward slightly.

"If the Lycan Council requested sealed testimony from you," I said carefully, "would you be legally obligated to provide it?"

The healer's pen paused. Just for a second.

"Yes," she said slowly. "Under Lycan Council jurisdiction, a pack healer's sealed medical testimony is compelled. Not optional."

I nodded. "And that testimony would include any medical conditions you've documented for ranked wolves? Even if those wolves haven't disclosed the conditions publicly?"

"Yes."

The silence stretched.

The healer set her pen down. Looked at me directly.

"Is there something specific you're asking about, Elena?"

I touched my mother's token once. Let the worn wood ground me.

"No," I said quietly. "I just wanted to understand the process."

She held my gaze for a long moment. Then nodded.

"The consultation is complete," she said. "You have forty-eight hours before the territorial signing. Use them wisely."

I stood. Walked to the door.

Behind me, I heard her open a locked drawer. The faint rustle of sealed documents.

I didn't look back.

I didn't need to.

The testimony already existed.
