Chapter 2

I waited until the pack hall emptied after breakfast. The ranked wolves filed out first—Dominic and Hailey at the front, her hand resting on his arm like she'd always belonged there. Then the Betas, the Gammas, the Deltas. I stayed in the corner by the kitchen door, eyes down, a scrub brush in my hand.

No one looked at me. I'd become part of the furniture.

The moment the last warrior cleared the threshold, I moved.

The secondary healer quarters sat at the eastern edge of pack grounds—a converted storage building where wolves went when their injuries weren't urgent enough for the main clinic or their rank wasn't high enough to justify the space. I'd passed it a hundred times in three years. Never been inside.

The door wasn't locked. I slipped through.

The air hit me first. Damp wood, old bandages, and underneath it—faint but unmistakable—the acrid chemical bite of wolfsbane. Not fresh. Residual. Like someone had burned it weeks ago and the scent had sunk into the walls.

My mother's gift. The one thing she left me that Dominic never knew about. I could identify wolfsbane variants by scent alone, track contamination through a building, tell you which plant it came from and how it was processed. She'd taught me before she died. Before my wolf went silent and everyone decided I was useless.

I followed the scent to the back corner.

Lena Marsh lay on a narrow cot, her frame too thin, her skin still carrying the grayish tint of prolonged poisoning. She'd been a Delta warrior once. Strong. Fast. Now she looked like a strong wind would break her.

She opened her eyes when I crouched beside the cot. Blinked. Frowned.

"You're the—" She stopped. Swallowed. "The Omega. Elena."

Not my name first. My rank. That was how it worked now.

"I am," I said quietly.

She studied me. Waiting for me to explain why I was here, why I was bothering her, why an Omega would risk coming to the healer quarters without permission.

I didn't waste time. "You were poisoned."

Her breath caught. She glanced toward the door. "I was sick. The healer said—"

"Wolfsbane," I said. "Prolonged exposure. Low doses over weeks. You didn't die because whoever did it wanted you weak, not dead. Weak enough to lose your rank. Weak enough to stop being a threat."

Lena's hands twisted in the blanket. "How do you—"

"I can smell it." I gestured toward the room. "It's still here. In the air. In the wood. Tell me what happened before you got sick."

She hesitated. I could see the calculation behind her eyes—trusting a demoted Omega versus keeping silent about something that had nearly killed her.

Finally, she spoke.

"Hailey's people brought me tea. Said it was a new blend the healer recommended for stamina during training. I drank it for three weeks." Her voice dropped. "Then I started losing my balance. Couldn't shift without pain. My wolf went quiet. The healer said it was exhaustion, told me to rest. By the time I could stand again, I'd been moved to Delta reserve status."

"The tea," I said. "What did it smell like?"

"Bitter. Herbal. There was something sweet underneath, like honey, but wrong. Too sharp."

Wolfsbane masked with clover honey. A common method. The honey hid the bitterness just enough that you didn't notice until it was too late.

"Who brought it?" I asked.

"Two of Hailey's Gamma loyalists. Cara and Jen. They said they were doing it as a favor, that Hailey wanted to make sure the female warriors were staying strong." Lena's jaw tightened. "I thought she was looking out for us."

I touched my mother's token through the fabric of my sleeve. Let the worn wood ground me.

"There were others," I said. "Two more she-wolves. Same symptoms."

Lena nodded slowly. "Mira and Sage. Both got moved to reserve status. Both stopped talking about it after Hailey made Beta."

"Because she told them to."

"Or because no one would believe them." Lena's eyes met mine. "You're gathering evidence."

I didn't confirm. Didn't deny.

"If you are," she said quietly, "I'll testify. I don't care what it costs me. She almost killed me. She took my rank. She made me into this." Her hand gestured weakly at her own body. "If you're going after her, I'm in."

I stood. "Don't tell anyone we spoke. Don't change your routine. When the time comes, I'll find you."

She nodded once.

I left the way I came.

The next three days were a masterclass in invisibility.

Pre-dawn floor scrubbing in the pack hall. Hauling waste bins from the training grounds. Serving meals to ranked wolves who didn't bother learning my name. I kept my eyes down, my movements efficient, my presence forgettable.

Hailey made sure I stayed that way.

Every morning she paused in front of me—never stopping fully, just slowing her stride—and made her comments. Loud enough for the Gamma warriors flanking her to hear. Never loud enough to be called outright cruelty.

"The hall looks better now that idle she-wolves have something useful to do."

"It's good to see everyone contributing according to their ability."

"Some wolves are meant to lead. Some are meant to serve."

The Luna's mantle trailed behind her like a victory banner. She never looked directly at me. She didn't have to. The performance was for everyone else.

I scrubbed the floor. Counted the supply crates stacked against the eastern wall. Noted the faint chemical undertone clinging to three of them—cedar and wolfsbane, barely detectable unless you knew what to look for.

The evidence was already in the building. Hailey had been careless. Or confident. Probably both.

On the fourth morning, I was assigned to the administrative annex.

Cleaning duty. The kind of task Omegas did because ranked wolves couldn't be bothered and because no one thought twice about an Omega moving through spaces where sensitive pack business happened.

I was invisible. That was the point.

The supply logs sat in a locked cabinet behind the main desk. The lock was simple. I'd watched the Beta secretary open it twice while I swept the floor nearby. Three-digit combination. She didn't bother hiding it. Why would she? I was just an Omega.

I waited until she left for lunch.

The logs were organized by quarter. I pulled the last eight quarters—two years—and spread them across the desk.

Wolfsbane shipments were listed under "medicinal supplies," coded green in the margin. Standard procedure for controlled substances. I cross-referenced the dates against my memory of the ward's supply-route patterns. Three irregular shipments. Eastern border. Each arriving within two weeks of one of the she-wolves falling ill.

All three logged under Dominic's authorization code.

I committed the dates to memory. The quantities. The routing codes. Then I checked the current quarter.

The authorization code was still active. Another shipment was scheduled for next month.

I returned the logs exactly as I'd found them. Closed the cabinet. Spun the lock. Picked up my broom.

When the Beta secretary returned, I was sweeping the far corner, eyes down, posture submissive.

She didn't even glance at me.

That night, alone in the Omega quarters, I pressed my thumb against my wrist and stared at the crude wolf carved into the doorframe.

*The Alpha's dead weight.*

I had a witness. I had a scent signature. I had shipment records tied directly to Dominic's authorization.

I had everything I needed to prove Hailey poisoned those she-wolves.

And I had proof that Dominic knew.

I touched my mother's token. Felt its worn surface beneath my fingers.

The bond was gone. The mark was cold. But something else was stirring.

Deep. Ancient. Waiting.
