Chapter 5

The knock came at four in the morning—sharp, urgent, the kind that meant something had gone wrong. I pulled on a robe and opened the door to find a junior pack member, a young Delta named Colin, soaked through and breathing hard.

"Ms. Bishop. There's—there's someone collapsed outside your residence. A male. He's been out there a while. Fever, maybe hypothermia. I didn't know if I should move him without—"

"Show me."

I followed him down the steps, Waffles padding anxiously at my heels. The rain had been falling since midnight, cold and relentless, turning the ground to mud. And there, crumpled against the side of my building like discarded laundry, was Benjamin Davis.

He looked smaller than I remembered. His clothes were plastered to his body, his hair matted to his forehead. His skin had that grayish cast that came with prolonged cold exposure. He was shivering so hard his teeth clattered, but his eyes were closed, his breathing shallow.

Colin hovered beside me, waiting for instructions. "Should I call the healers? Or—"

"Take him to Healer Vasquez," I said. My voice came out flat, clinical. "Tell her he's running a fever and he's been exposed to the elements for several hours. She'll know what to do."

"You're not coming?"

"No."

Colin blinked, clearly expecting something else—some dramatic confrontation, maybe, or at least a conversation. But I had nothing to say to the man on the ground. I'd said everything that mattered the night he rejected me in front of the entire Ironmaw Pack. Anything else would just be noise.

I watched Colin and another Delta lift Benjamin between them, his head lolling against Colin's shoulder. He didn't wake. Didn't open his eyes. Just hung there like a broken thing while they carried him toward the healers' ward.

I picked up Waffles, went back inside, and closed the door.

The rain kept falling. I made tea I didn't drink and sat by the window watching the sky lighten from black to gray. My daughter turned slow circles beneath my ribs, restless, like she could feel the tension humming through my body even if I refused to name it.

I didn't go to the healers' ward. I didn't ask for updates. I went to work.

Petra found me in my office just before noon, her healer's tunic spotted with rain from the walk between buildings. She didn't sit. Just stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, studying me with that particular expression healers get when they're deciding how much truth you can handle.

"He's stable," she said. "Fever broke an hour ago. Physically, he'll recover."

"Good. When can he leave?"

Petra's mouth thinned. "He's been asking for you. Shouting, actually, until I sedated him. He tried to leave his bed twice. I had to restrain him."

"That's not my problem."

"I know." Petra stepped inside, closed the door behind her. "But I'm required to inform you when a wolf on Silvercrest soil is requesting contact with a resident. Protocol. You can refuse, obviously. I'm guessing you will."

"I will."

She nodded, unsurprised. "Do you want me to deliver a message? Something to make him stop asking?"

I thought about that. Thought about all the things I could say—angry things, cutting things, true things that would land like stones. But in the end, there was only one message that mattered.

"Tell him he may recover and leave. I have nothing to say to him."

Petra wrote it down on a scrap of paper, her handwriting precise and impersonal. "I'll deliver it myself."

She left. I went back to the border logistics report I'd been annotating, forcing my eyes to focus on the words until they stopped blurring.

Petra returned an hour later. She didn't speak right away. Just stood in my doorway again, holding the folded note in her hand.

"He read it," she said finally. "Crumpled it up. Stared at the ceiling for maybe ten minutes without moving. Then he asked if you were still on Silvercrest soil."

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him that was none of his business." Petra's voice was dry. "He didn't argue. Just—went quiet. He's still in the ward. He hasn't tried to leave again."

I set down my pen. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because he's not leaving, Serena. He's not trying to recover and go. He's just—lying there. Waiting. And I thought you should know."

Something cold settled in my stomach. "Waiting for what?"

Petra shook her head. "I don't know. But whatever it is, he thinks he's going to get it from you. And I don't think your silence is going to be enough to convince him otherwise."

She left before I could answer. I sat alone in my office as the afternoon light slanted through the window, one hand pressed against the place where my daughter kicked, steady and insistent, and tried not to think about the man lying two buildings away, staring at a ceiling in a territory that wasn't his, refusing to accept that silence was the only answer I had left to give.

Dominic appeared in my doorway just before six. He didn't knock. Didn't announce himself. Just stood there, tall and still, his dark eyes unreadable.

"Ms. Bishop."

I looked up. "Your Highness."

"I've been informed that the Ironmaw Alpha is still occupying space in our healers' ward." His voice was perfectly neutral. "Healer Vasquez reports he's medically cleared to travel but has made no attempt to leave Silvercrest soil."

I met his gaze. "I'm aware."

"Do you require intervention?"

"Not yet."

Dominic studied me for a long moment. Then he stepped inside, closed the door, and sat in the chair across from my desk without asking. "He collapsed outside your residence in a rainstorm. That's not coincidence. That's strategy."

"I know what it is."

"And you sent him to the healers anyway."

"I'm not cruel," I said quietly. "I just don't owe him anything beyond basic decency."

Dominic's mouth curved—not quite a smile, but something close. "Most wolves wouldn't have extended even that much."

"Most wolves weren't mated to him for seven years."

The words hung in the air between us. Dominic didn't look away. Didn't offer empty comfort or pointless advice. He just sat there, solid and present, until the weight in my chest eased just enough to breathe.

"If he doesn't leave within forty-eight hours," Dominic said finally, "I'll have him escorted to the border. You won't have to see him. You won't have to speak to him. He'll simply be gone."

"Thank you."

He stood, moved toward the door, then paused. "For what it's worth, Ms. Bishop—your silence is the cruelest thing you could have given him. And he earned every second of it."

He left before I could answer. I sat in the gathering dark, Waffles asleep under my desk, my daughter turning slow circles beneath my ribs, and tried not to think about the man two buildings away, lying in a narrow bed, staring at a ceiling, waiting for an answer that would never come.

The rain stopped just before midnight. I stood at my window and watched the clouds break apart, revealing a sliver of moon, cold and distant and utterly indifferent to the wolves below.

Benjamin was still in the healers' ward. Still waiting.

And somewhere deep in the place where my wolf used to live, something stirred—not her voice, not yet, but the faintest suggestion of movement, like breath against glass.

I pressed my hand to my chest and felt nothing but the steady beat of my own heart, alone in the silence, exactly as it should be.
