Chapter 1

The scent hit me before I even set my bag down—magnolia, sweet and cloying, threaded through Benjamin's pillow like it had been stitched into the fabric. I froze in the doorway of our bedroom, seven days of alliance meetings still clinging to my clothes, five months of pregnancy pressing warm against my ribs. My wolf went rigid inside me, every hackle raised. That scent didn't belong on his sheets. It didn't belong on his collar, either, when I picked up the shirt draped over the chair and pressed it to my face without meaning to. Magnolia, layered deep, in the places where only my scent—cedar and honey—should have lived. My hands went cold. I knew that smell. I'd carried it out of a rogue camp myself, wrapped it in a blanket, fed it soup until it stopped shaking. Alondra.

I found Benjamin in his study an hour later, still holding the shirt. "Explain this," I said, and set the fabric on his desk like evidence.

He didn't even look at it. "Explain what, Serena? A shirt?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about." My voice didn't shake. I wouldn't let it. "Alondra's scent is in our bed."

His jaw tightened, and then the Alpha tone rolled out of him, low and crushing, pressing down on my chest like a physical hand. "You're being paranoid. You've been gone a week, you're exhausted, and you're imagining things that aren't there. Know your place, Serena, before you embarrass yourself in front of the pack." The command settled into my bones whether I wanted it to or not—that was the cruelty of an Alpha's voice on his own Luna. My wolf snarled and threw herself against the wall of his authority, and for one humiliating second I said nothing at all. Then I turned and walked out, shaking, the scent still burning behind my eyes like a brand no command could erase.

Three nights later, the pack gathered for the Banquet. Torches lit the yard, and I stood at Benjamin's side in the dress I'd chosen to announce our pup in. I never got the chance.

Benjamin rose. The pack quieted. And then, in a voice loud enough to carry to every wolf present, he spoke the words that split my life in two.

"I, Benjamin Davis, Alpha of the Ironmaw Pack, reject you, Serena Bishop, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold first, then hollow, like a door slamming shut on an empty room. My wolf collapsed inside me without a sound—not a whimper, not a howl, just silence where a living thing had been a heartbeat before. Behind him, Alondra stepped forward in a Luna's white dress, smirking like she'd already won a war I hadn't known we were fighting.

I didn't cry. I didn't beg. I looked Benjamin dead in the eye and let myself memorize exactly what his cruelty looked like in torchlight. Then I turned, called Waffles to heel, and walked out of the pack house that had been my home for seven years.

Reese answered my call before I finished dialing. *"He did WHAT? That absolute son of a—Serena, I swear to the Goddess, I will drag him into the woods myself and—"* His fury poured through the mind-link, foul-mouthed and merciless, and I let it wash over me like something close to comfort. He arranged safe passage within hours and arrived before dawn, kicking Benjamin's golf trophies out of his path as he helped me pack.

Before I left, I tried to shift. Nothing answered—my wolf stayed dark and silent—but my claws still extended, sharp and trembling. I walked to the massive Mate Ceremony portrait on the wall, the one of Benjamin and me seven years younger, and I tore it apart. Canvas shredded. Glass shattered across the floor. When I was done, nothing recognizable remained. It wasn't grief. It was severance.

I crossed the Ironmaw border before sunrise, Waffles pressed against my leg, a folder of alliance documents in my arms, and a silence inside me where a wolf used to live.

The Silvercrest administrative center smelled of pine and steel, nothing like home. The Beta who received me—broad-shouldered, sharp-eyed—looked twice at my belly, twice at the absence of any mate-scent clinging to my skin, and said nothing about either.

"You're early, Ms. Bishop."

"I'd like my assignment files before I'm shown to quarters," I said.

He studied me a moment longer, then slid a folder across the desk. "The Prince asked to review every liaison hire personally. He'll want to meet you before the week is out."
