After My Alpha Rejected Me for the New She-Wolf

At 9:47 PM, my entire world collapsed. In front of three hundred pack members, the warmth of my mate bond drained away. I watched in absolute shock as Emiliano, the man I loved, ascended the platform and gripped another woman's waist, sealing my public rejection. Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at 9:47, mid-toast, while three hundred wolves were still raising their glasses.

It happened in stages. First the heat drained, the way warm water leaves a tub. Then a hollow opened underneath — not a wound, just absence, like a door clicking shut on an empty room. My glass tipped in my fingers. Champagne ran across the white tablecloth in a long pale stripe.

I looked up.

Emiliano was already on the platform. He had walked there while I was watching the candles. His hand was on a woman's waist, and I knew the shape of that hand. Seven years of knowing. The woman was Amora Castillo, the new transfer with her too-careful smile and her vanilla-too-sweet scent, and that smile was pointed at me now like a knife laid flat on a plate.

The great hall went quiet by rows. The wolves nearest the platform first, then the middle tables, then the back. By the time the silence reached me, my mate's mouth was already moving.

"I, Emiliano Harrison, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Piper Warren, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit the mark and the mark went out.

My knees folded. There was no decision involved. The bond seized along the spine like a wire pulled taut and then snipped, and my body did what bodies do when something inside them is taken. I went down on the polished floor with my hand still wrapped around the stem of the empty glass.

Inside me, in the place where my wolf had slept since I was a child, something opened one eye. A soundless scream that traveled nowhere because there was nowhere for it to go. *Not yet,* I thought at her, the first words I had ever said to a stranger living under my own ribs. *Not yet.*

I did not scream out loud. I did not cry. I had three days of warning — three days since I'd caught the wolfsbane bitterness layered under Amora's vanilla — and a woman who has had three days does not cry on a floor.

I got my palms under me. I got my knees under me. I stood up.

Nobody spoke. Three hundred wolves and not a single chair scraped. Emiliano was looking at me from the platform with an expression I had never seen on him before — the small, blank surprise of a man who had rehearsed a script and forgotten there was a second actor in the scene.

I did not look at him long. I had work to do.

The nearest ward-stone was set into the wall behind the head table, the size of my thumb, the color of river slate, glowing the soft warm gold I had spent seven winters threading into it. I walked over. I pressed my fingertips to it the way I had pressed them a thousand times, in greeting, in reinforcement, in the small private ritual nobody had ever bothered to ask me about.

This time I pulled.

The stone came loose in my hand with a sound like a held breath finally let go. The light in the corner of the room dimmed by a hair. One of the candle flames near me guttered.

I moved to the next.

I walked the perimeter of the great hall the way a Healer walks a sick body, methodically, without hurry, and the wolves parted in front of me without anyone giving an order. Stone after stone. The hall got darker by degrees. The ambient warmth I had laid into the walls — the warmth pack members used to lean against on cold mornings without knowing why — leaked out behind me as I went.

At the threshold I turned around with the last stone in my palm.

Emiliano was still on the platform. Amora's hand had dropped from his arm. She had finally noticed that the room was not behaving the way she had planned for it to behave.

I opened the mind-link one last time. It was already narrowing — the channel a thread, then a hair, then almost nothing. I did not waste it.

*Feel what it's like to be unprotected.*

Seven words. Then I cut the link.

The severance hit him visibly. I watched his head jerk back an inch as if someone had slapped him from inside his own skull. Good. I set the last ward-stone down outside the door, on the stone step, where it would not protect anything ever again, and I walked across the threshold into the cold.

My satchel was already by the gate. I had packed it that afternoon.

I crossed the Silverfang border at 10:09. The treeline took me without comment.

— — —

For forty-eight hours nothing reached me but wind.

I walked through that first night and slept through the next day in a hollow under a fallen pine, drinking from a thermos and chewing dried meat I could not taste. I knew the eastern wards would go first; they were the oldest, the most layered, the ones I had rebuilt three times. I did not need to be there to know the exact hour they would fail. I had built them. I knew their breath.

What I did not know — what I would not learn until later — was that at the same hour my wards went dark, Amora was standing in my old quarters in front of a half-circle of senior warriors, trying on a Luna's voice that did not fit her mouth.

"I'll need a strategy meeting at first light," she was saying. "Border rotations. Sentry assignments."

The warriors did not move.

Dara Finch's brother — Caleb, the quiet one, the one with the scar through his eyebrow — looked at her for a long moment and then said, very politely, "Luna Amora. Where did you move the ward-stones for the northern corridor?"

Amora's mouth opened.

"What ward-stones," she said.
