Chapter 3

The safe house was twenty miles outside pack territory, tucked behind a gas station that had been out of business for years. Teagan found it through some contact she didn't name, and I didn't ask. The less I knew about the mechanics of our escape routes, the less I could accidentally broadcast through the bond.

I arrived after dark. Parked behind the building where the car wouldn't be visible from the road. My hands were steady on the wheel. I was proud of that.

Inside, the air smelled like dust and old wood. A single overhead bulb threw harsh light across a scarred table. Teagan was already there, a stack of papers spread in front of her. And Stella—

I'd met her twice before. Teagan's friend from college. Warm smile, easy laugh, the kind of person who made you feel like you'd known her longer than you had. She stood when I came in. Her face was different now. Harder. The warmth was still there, but underneath it was something I recognized because I'd been building it inside myself for weeks.

Fury with a purpose.

"Cassidy," she said quietly.

I nodded. Set my bag on the table. Sat down.

Teagan pushed a mug of water toward me. Not tea. Never tea again. I wrapped both hands around it and waited.

Stella sat across from me. She didn't apologize. Didn't offer sympathy. She just opened the silver case she'd shown Teagan at the diner and set it between us.

"Scent suppressants," she said. "Court issue. Silvercrest Lycan Court." She paused. "My father is King Aldric."

I looked at her. At the case. At Teagan, who was watching me with the careful stillness of someone waiting to see if I would break.

I didn't break.

"He doesn't know," I said. Not a question.

"Jett?" Stella's mouth tightened. "No. He thinks I'm a civilian with royal connections. Enough to be interesting. Not enough to require actual respect." She leaned forward. "He's been courting me for three months. Expensive dinners. Gifts. Long conversations about how lonely it is at the top, how he wishes he had a mate who truly understood the weight of leadership." Her voice didn't shake. "He told me two weeks ago that he'd never felt a connection like this before."

My mating mark burned cold. I pressed two fingers to it. Checked the bond. Jett was asleep—I could feel the slow, easy rhythm of it, the warmth of satisfaction. He'd signed off on a new territorial expansion proposal tonight. He was pleased with himself.

I let the bond go quiet again.

"What can you give us?" I asked.

Stella didn't hesitate. "Lycan Council jurisdiction over Alpha-level crimes. Tribunal authority that supersedes pack law. Forensic bloodline recognition on physical evidence." She tapped the table once. "And bait. He wants a Lycan alliance. He wants status. He wants a crown." Her eyes met mine. "Let's build him one."

I looked at Teagan. She slid a folded napkin across the table. I opened it. Saw the outline she'd drawn. A fictional territory. A shell operation. A trap with teeth.

"He'll need to be unmated," I said quietly. "To pursue you officially."

"Yes," Stella said.

"He'll reject me." I heard my own voice. Flat. Clinical. "Publicly. In front of the pack. He'll have to, to prove he's free to mate you."

Teagan's hand found mine under the table. Squeezed once.

I looked at the napkin again. At the shape of the thing we were building. At the space where my name would be erased so Jett could write someone else's.

"I need time," I said. "To document. To gather evidence through the bond. Every conversation. Every spike of greed when you mention territory. Every moment of arousal when he thinks about you instead of me." I met Stella's eyes. "Can you keep him interested that long?"

Her smile was cold and perfect. "I was raised in a court where every word is a move, Cassidy. I can keep him interested until the exact second we need him to break."

I nodded. Pulled the cipher journal from my bag. Set it on the table. Opened it to the page where I'd been memorizing the rejection vow.

*I, Jett Hudson, Alpha of the Ironmaw Pack, reject you, Cassidy Anderson, as my mate and Luna.*

I'd written it seventeen times. Practiced it in the mirror. Felt the shape of the words in my mouth.

"When he speaks it," I said, "I'll speak it back. But not before the Council. Not before witnesses who can't be gaslit or silenced." I looked at them both. "We do this once. We do it right. And when it's done, there's nothing left of him."

Teagan pulled a pocket knife from her jacket. Flicked it open. Held her thumb over the blade.

"Blood pact," she said. "The way Dad taught us."

Stella didn't flinch. She held out her hand.

I took the knife. Drew it across my thumb. Watched the blood well up, bright and certain.

We pressed our thumbs together over the center of the table. Three women. Three drops of blood. One purpose.

"For Bryan Anderson," Teagan whispered.

"For every woman he's lied to," Stella said.

"For the wolf he tried to kill," I finished.

Our blood mixed on the scarred wood. The bond with Jett pulsed faintly in the back of my mind—still there, still active, still the wire I would use to watch him destroy himself.

I pulled my hand back. Wrapped my thumb in a napkin.

"I go back tonight," I said. "He can't know I was gone."

Stella nodded. "I'll escalate. Dinner next week. I'll mention my father's territorial holdings. Let him start calculating."

Teagan gathered her papers. "I'll build the shell operation. Make it look real enough that his Beta won't question the fund transfers."

I stood. Picked up my bag. At the door, I turned back.

"Thank you," I said.

Stella met my eyes. "Thank me when it's done."

I drove back to Ironmaw with the bond quiet and my hands steady on the wheel. The night was dark. The road was empty. My wolf pressed once against my ribs—patient, awake, waiting.

I left the car in the usual spot. Slipped through the mudroom door I'd left unlocked. Climbed the stairs without a sound.

Jett was still asleep when I slid into bed beside him. He rolled toward me, his arm heavy across my waist, his breath warm against my neck.

"Where were you?" he mumbled.

"Bathroom," I whispered. "The baby's pressing on my bladder."

He made a satisfied sound and pulled me closer. The mating mark hummed with his contentment.

I lay there in the dark with his arm around me and my sister's blood still drying under the bandage on my thumb.

And I began to count.
