Chapter 4

Teagan called me three nights after the blood pact. Not through my phone—through the burner she'd left in the mudroom, wrapped in a dish towel behind the cleaning supplies where Margaret would never think to look.

"It's done," she said. No greeting. No preamble. "The shell operation is live. Charter documentation filed with the regional pack registry. Financial routing structure in place. It looks real because I made it real enough to pass audit."

I was in the bathroom with the tap running, the only place in the pack house where I could speak without the bond picking up the shape of my voice. My hand pressed flat against the tile wall.

"How long did it take you?"

"Three days. No sleep." Her voice was thin, stretched. "Cass, I cross-referenced Lycan Council jurisprudence for territorial charter structures. I sketched maps on seventeen napkins. I know more about fraudulent pack accounting than anyone who isn't actively embezzling should know." A pause. "It's going to work."

I closed my eyes. Felt the bond hum faintly in the background—Jett was downstairs in his office, reviewing something that pleased him. Satisfaction rolled through the link like warm honey.

"The murder case?" I asked quietly.

"Slower. But I found the financial records. Pack funds transferred to three wolves two weeks before Dad died. All three were at the raid." Her breath hitched. "Margaret signed the transfer authorization herself. Her signature's on file."

My wolf slammed against my ribs. Once. Hard. I pressed two fingers to my mating mark and forced everything flat.

"Good," I said. "Keep building it. We need it airtight before the tribunal."

"I know." Teagan's voice dropped. "Stella's meeting him tonight. Dinner. She's going to escalate."

I didn't answer. Couldn't. The bond pulsed—Jett was coming upstairs.

"I have to go," I whispered.

I flushed the toilet. Ran the tap again. Slid the burner back into the dish towel and buried it behind the bleach bottles. By the time I opened the bathroom door, my face was calm. My hands were steady.

Jett was waiting in the hallway.

"You okay?" he asked. Concerned. Warm. The face he used when other people were watching.

"Fine," I said. "Just the baby."

He kissed my forehead. His hand found my belly, spread flat and possessive. Through the bond, I felt his pride. His satisfaction. His absolute certainty that I was his.

I smiled at him.

And inside, I counted.

---

Stella told me later how the dinner went. She'd chosen the restaurant carefully—upscale, private, the kind of place where Alphas took mates they wanted to impress. She wore something simple. Let her Lycan scent suppressants do their work. Modulated her body language to be just deferential enough.

Jett arrived ten minutes early.

He ordered wine. Held her chair. Smiled the smile that had once made me believe the mate bond was proof of love.

Stella let him talk. About Ironmaw's expansion. About the challenges of modern Alpha leadership. About how rare it was to meet someone who truly understood the weight of power.

Halfway through the meal, she let her hand tremble around her wine glass.

"Are you alright?" Jett asked. Leaning forward. Concerned.

Stella set the glass down carefully. Looked at him with something that might have been vulnerability if you didn't know it was a scalpel.

"I haven't been honest with you," she said quietly.

Jett went very still. She felt it—the shift in his attention, the predator focus clicking into place.

"My family," Stella continued. "The connections I mentioned. They're not just connections." She paused. Let the silence build. "My father is Aldric. Lycan King Aldric. Silvercrest Court."

The restaurant was quiet. Somewhere in the background, silverware clinked against plates.

Jett's face did nothing. But Stella watched his pupils dilate. Watched his breathing change. Watched the exact moment greed overrode every other calculation in his brain.

Back at the pack house, I felt it through the bond.

A wave of heat. Want. Hunger so sharp it made my stomach turn. I was sitting at the kitchen table with Margaret, pretending to review nursery catalogs. My pen stopped moving. My wolf snarled.

I pressed two fingers to my mating mark. Forced my face to stay calm. Opened my cipher journal under the catalog and wrote the time. The quality of the sensation. The way it felt like being burned from the inside.

Margaret looked up. "Are you alright, dear?"

"Fine," I said. "Just tired."

She smiled thinly and went back to her tea.

I wrote three more lines. Then I closed the journal and went upstairs before she could see my hands shaking.

---

Stella delivered the territorial merger proposal two days later. Over coffee. Casual. Like she was discussing the weather.

"My father has holdings," she said. "Unclaimed land north of the regional borders. He's been looking for the right Alpha to steward it." She stirred her coffee slowly. "It would come as part of a mating alliance. A dowry, essentially."

Jett's coffee sat untouched.

"How much land?" he asked. His voice was careful. Controlled.

Stella named a number that made his breath catch.

"But there's a condition," she said quietly. "Lycan royal mating alliances require both parties to be unmated. Completely free of prior bonds." She met his eyes. "My father is very traditional about these things."

Jett was silent for a long time.

Then he smiled. The real one. The one I'd seen exactly twice in seven years—both times when he'd acquired something he wanted very badly.

"That's reasonable," he said.

Through the bond, I felt him start to calculate. The cost of discarding me. The value of a Lycan crown. The territorial empire he could build with King Aldric's backing.

He was adding it up. And I was less than the sum.

I pressed my pen to the journal page so hard the tip tore through.

---

The wolfsbane alliance came three days later. Stella fed it to him like bait on a hook—intelligence about a neighboring pack's supply chain, an opportunity to secure strategic resources before the formal mating ceremony with her.

"My father will want to see that you're capable," she said. "That Ironmaw is strong enough to stand beside Silvercrest."

Jett called an emergency meeting with his Beta that night.

Owen Marsh had served Jett for six years. Loyal. Steady. The kind of wolf who asked the right questions and trusted his Alpha's answers.

Jett didn't give him a chance to ask.

"I'm authorizing a fund transfer," Jett said. "War reserves. We're entering a strategic alliance with the Crescent Ridge Pack. Wolfsbane supply chain. It's time-sensitive."

Owen frowned. "I haven't seen the charter documentation."

"It's being finalized." Jett's voice was smooth. Absolute. "I need you to process the transfer tonight."

"How much?"

Jett named the amount.

Owen's frown deepened. "That's forty percent of our emergency reserves."

"I'm aware."

"Alpha—" Owen stopped. Started again, more carefully. "That's a significant risk. If the alliance falls through—"

"It won't." Jett leaned back in his chair. The posture of a man who had never been questioned and didn't intend to start. "Process the transfer, Owen. That's an order."

Owen looked at him for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Yes, Alpha," he said quietly.

But when he left the office, Teagan—who had been listening from the stairwell with a recording device she'd borrowed from Stella's Lycan Court contacts—watched his face. Watched the way his jaw tightened. The way his eyes carried something they hadn't carried before.

A hairline fracture.

Where trust used to be.

She texted me a single word: *Done.*

I read it in the bathroom with the tap running and my hand pressed flat against the tile.

The bond hummed. Jett was pleased. Satisfied. Certain.

I closed my eyes.

And I smiled.
