Chapter 1

The rejection came at 9:02, right after the third drumbeat, right when I thought he was about to say my name the good way.

"I, Mason, Alpha of Thornridge Pack, reject you, Bella, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my collarbone went cold first. Then it went empty, like a door shutting on a room I didn't know was still furnished. I felt my knees buckle before my brain caught up to what my body already understood. The crowd stepped back from me in a ring, the way people step back from a spill.

I didn't scream. I wanted to. What came out was a thin, broken sound I didn't recognize as mine.

Stephanie climbed the platform in a shawl the color of dried blood, and under the torch smoke I caught it — rose and amber, thick and deliberate, laid over Mason's skin like a second coat of paint. She'd marked him before he'd even finished rejecting me. The pack clapped. Somebody near the back actually cheered.

I made myself stand. That was the only rebellion left in me — staying upright while three years of my life got folded up and handed to someone else in a shawl.

A hand closed around my arm. Mason's Gamma, hauling me toward the dirt path that led to the Omega quarters, the place they kept people they'd decided didn't count.

"Move," he said, like I was furniture.

Something in my chest that had been silent for seventeen years finally answered him.

It didn't feel like a shift. It felt like a door I never knew existed getting kicked off its hinges. Bones rearranged themselves in one white-hot instant. Fur poured out of me, silver, then whiter than silver, and I heard — not felt, heard — a voice inside my own skull for the first time in my life, low and furious: *Finally. Get up. Get UP.*

I got up. Two meters of something that used to be me, standing over a clearing full of people who had just watched me collapse.

The aura came off me before I even understood I had one. I saw it hit the crowd like a gust through wheat — every wolf in that clearing dropped. Mason dropped. Stephanie dropped, the shawl slipping off one shoulder. The Gamma's grip on my arm let go because the Gamma was on his knees, forehead nearly touching dirt.

I looked down at Mason. His face did three things in quick succession — confusion, then something colder and more calculating, then, for just a second, real fear. Good. I wanted him to know what fear tasted like. I'd been swallowing it for years.

Stephanie wasn't looking at me at all. She was staring past me, at a man standing at the tree line who hadn't knelt — a stranger in a gray coat with a crest stitched at the collar, watching the whole thing with the stillness of someone taking inventory.

I shifted back. It hurt worse coming back than going out, my whole body shaking, sweat freezing on my skin in the night air. Somebody threw a blanket over my shoulders. I didn't look to see who.

The stranger crossed the clearing toward me, and up close I could see him go pale — actually pale, blood draining out of a face that looked like it had been trained not to show anything.

"My name is Garrett," he said. "I serve the Silverfang Court. That scent —" He stopped himself, recalibrated, spoke like he was reading off a card. "Your scent carries the bloodline signature of the Silverfang princess. She was stolen as an infant nineteen years ago. I need to contact my King."

He already had two fingers pressed to his temple before he finished the sentence. Mind-link. I understood that much, even wolfless and shaking.

I didn't say anything for a long moment. My whole life I had been the girl who wasn't enough — not wolf enough, not chosen enough, not worth marking. Now a stranger was telling me I was a stolen princess, and some small starved part of me wanted to grab that like a life raft.

I didn't.

I looked at Mason, back on his feet now, his eyes already doing math behind the fear. I looked at Stephanie, composure cracking at the corners like old paint.

Then I turned back to Garrett.

"I'll need that in writing," I said.

Garrett blinked. It was the first time all night anyone had looked at me like I might actually be dangerous.

Behind him, Mason took a step toward me — one step, slow, testing — his mouth already opening around my name, the way he used to say it before any of this, before the shawl, before the vow.

"Bella —"

I didn't let him finish.
