Chapter 2

The King arrived before dawn.

I didn't sleep. Couldn't. My wolf was still too loud in my head, pacing and growling and saying things I didn't have words for yet. I sat on the floor of the room they'd given me—not the Omega quarters, not anymore, just some guest room that smelled like dust and old furniture—and pressed paint-stained fingers against my wrist. It was the only thing that felt real.

Garrett had said hours. He meant it. By the time the sun broke over the ridge, there were vehicles in the driveway—black, sleek, the kind that cost more than most pack houses. I watched from the window as men in gray uniforms stepped out first, then a woman with silver at her temples, then him.

King Aldric Ashford didn't look like someone who'd spent twenty years grieving. He looked like someone who'd spent twenty years governing in spite of it. Tall, broad-shouldered, moving with the kind of certainty that comes from never being told no. He wore authority the way other people wore jackets.

He stepped into the pack house, and I heard it from three rooms away—a howl, low and resonant, that rattled the glass in the window frames. Not grief this time. Something else. Something that sounded almost like relief.

I didn't move toward it.

Mason met him in the main hall. I could hear the Alpha tone from where I stood, all formal deference and carefully chosen words. "Your Majesty. Thornridge is honored—"

"Where is she."

Not a question. A demand that didn't need volume to land.

Garrett's voice, quieter: "Second floor. East wing."

Footsteps on the stairs. Heavy, deliberate. I stayed where I was, fingers still pressed to my wrist, watching the door.

He knocked. That surprised me. A king, knocking.

"Come in," I said.

The door opened. King Aldric filled the frame, and for a long moment he just stood there, looking at me the way someone looks at something they thought they'd lost forever. His wolf was right there, just under his skin—I could feel the aura of it, silver-white like mine, humming with recognition.

He took one step into the room. Stopped. Started to speak, stopped again. When the words finally came, they sounded like they'd been rehearsed three different ways and he'd thrown all of them out.

"You have her eyes," he said quietly. "Your mother's."

I didn't know what to do with that. I'd spent nineteen years being nobody's daughter, and now a man wearing a crown was standing in a guest room telling me I had a dead woman's eyes.

"Garrett said you're my father," I said. It came out flatter than I meant it to.

"I am." He took another step, slow, like I might bolt. "You were stolen from the Silverfang Court when you were six months old. We searched for years. Decades. I never stopped looking."

I believed him. That was the worst part—I could hear the truth of it in his voice, see it in the way his hands stayed carefully at his sides like he wanted to reach for me but didn't trust himself to.

"And now you found me," I said. "So what happens next? You take me back to your Court, give me a title, and I'm supposed to be grateful?"

Something flickered across his face. Not anger. Something more complicated.

"I'm offering you what was stolen from you," he said. "Your name. Your bloodline. A place in the Silverfang Court. You're a princess, Bella. You always were."

"I was an Omega three hours ago," I said. "Nobody cared about my bloodline then."

His jaw tightened. "That ends now. The Council will be convened. Reparations will be made. The pack that failed you—"

"The pack that rejected me," I corrected. "Let's use the right words."

He stopped. Looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time—not as a lost daughter, but as someone who might not want to be found.

"You're angry," he said.

"I'm a lot of things." I stood up, still holding my own wrist. "And I'm not going anywhere until I know exactly what you're offering and what it costs."

For the first time since he walked in, King Aldric smiled. It was small, almost sad, but genuine.

"You're definitely my daughter," he said.

Before I could answer, footsteps in the hallway—fast, purposeful. A knock at the doorframe, and Garrett stepped in with another man behind him.

This one was younger. Thirties, maybe. Dark hair, sharp jaw, wearing the same gray coat as Garrett but carrying it differently—like the authority was his, not borrowed. His eyes found mine immediately, and I watched something shift in his expression, something he tried to cover and couldn't quite manage.

"Prince Damien," Garrett said. "May I present—"

The scent hit me before he finished the sentence.

Cedar. Rain. Something darker underneath, like smoke from a fire that hadn't been lit yet.

My wolf surged. Not the way it had last night, all rage and breaking free. This was different. Deeper. The kind of pull that felt like gravity.

No.

No, no, no.

I took a step back. Damien went completely still, and I saw his hands curl into fists at his sides, saw the tension in his shoulders like he was holding himself in place by force.

Every wolf in the room could scent it. The bond, snapping into place like a lock turning.

King Aldric looked between us, and his expression did something complicated—surprise, then understanding, then something that might have been concern.

I didn't wait for anyone to say it out loud.

"I need air," I said, and walked past all of them into the hallway.

I made it halfway to the stairs before I saw Mason at the far end of the corridor, frozen in place, staring at the rejection scar on his own hand like it had just started bleeding again.

He'd scented it too.

Good. I wanted him to know exactly what he'd thrown away.
