Chapter 5

I didn't go back to my quarters after leaving Lawson's office.

I walked to the healer's compound instead. My hand had stopped bleeding by the time I arrived, but the cut across my palm was still raw. The healer on duty—a quiet woman named Iris—cleaned it without asking questions. She wrapped the gauze tight and told me to keep it dry.

I thanked her and walked to Gregory's room.

He was awake. Sitting in his chair by the window, the carved wooden wolf on the sill where I always left it. He looked up when I entered. His gaze went to my bandaged hand, then to my face.

He didn't ask. He never did.

I sat in the chair across from him. The silence between us was familiar. Steady. The only silence in the entire pack that didn't feel like judgment.

"I accepted it," I said finally.

Gregory's expression didn't change. He just nodded once. Slowly. Like he'd been expecting this for a long time.

"Good," he said quietly.

I blinked. "Good?"

"You're free now." His voice was rough, but certain. "Whatever comes next, you're not carrying his cowardice anymore."

I looked down at my bandaged hand. At the white gauze already spotted with faint red. "The pack pities me."

"The pack is wrong."

I met his eyes. He leaned forward slightly, his hands folded on the armrest. The same hands that had built Ironveil into what it was. The same hands that had raised the son who just rejected me.

"You are worth more than what my blood gave you," he said. Not for the first time. But this time, the words carried a different weight. A finality.

I stayed with him for another hour. We didn't talk about Lawson. We didn't talk about Renata. We just sat. And when I finally left, Gregory was still holding the carved wooden wolf between his palms.

---

The knock came late.

I was in the records room again, trying to focus on the Nighthollow terms. My hand ached where the cut was. The words on the page kept blurring together. I'd read the same clause four times when I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Not Marcus this time. Someone lighter. Hesitant.

The door opened. Dara Ashwood stood in the doorway.

I knew her. Everyone knew her. She was one of the senior pack elders—a woman in her late fifties with silver streaking through her dark hair and a reputation for smooth diplomacy. She'd been one of Renata's earliest supporters. One of the voices that had legitimized Renata's presence in the pack house over the years.

She looked at me now with an expression I couldn't quite read. Guilt? Fear? Something in between.

"Emiliana." Her voice was quiet. Careful. "May I come in?"

I gestured to the empty chair across the desk. She sat slowly, her hands folded in her lap. She didn't look at me directly. Just stared at the maps spread across the desk.

"I heard what happened," she said finally. "In Lawson's office."

I didn't respond. Just waited.

"The blood," she continued. Her voice was getting quieter. "On your hand. On the floor. The shattered plaque." She looked up. Met my eyes. "You didn't cry."

I held her gaze. "No."

Dara's hands tightened in her lap. "I came to apologize."

I blinked. "For what?"

"For enabling it." The words came out in a rush. "For years, I told myself it wasn't my business. That you were strong enough to handle it. That Renata needed support after Bodie's birth, and if that meant—" She stopped. Took a breath. "I told myself lies because the truth was uncomfortable. And I watched you suffer because my comfort mattered more."

The silence stretched between us. Heavy. Honest.

"Why are you telling me this now?" I asked.

Dara's expression cracked. Just slightly. "Because I saw you walk out of that office with your head up. And I realized—" Her voice broke. "History is going to remember this. And I don't want to be on the wrong side of it."

She stood. Smoothed her skirt with shaking hands. "I'm going to see Gregory tonight. I'm going to tell him everything. The secret marking. The years of—" She couldn't finish. Just shook her head. "He needs to know. Before it's too late."

She walked to the door. Stopped. Looked back at me.

"You deserved better," she said quietly. "We all knew it. And we did nothing."

Then she left.

I sat alone in the records room with the alliance documents I couldn't focus on. With the bandaged hand that still ached. With the hollow space where Sera used to be.

And I wondered what Gregory would do when he heard the full truth from someone who had spent years helping to hide it.

---

The mind-link came at dawn.

Marcus. His voice in my head was clipped. Formal. "Emergency pack gathering. Full moon tonight. Gregory's orders."

I sat up in bed. "What's the reason?"

"He didn't say. But it's binding. Every wolf in the territory is summoned."

I closed the link. Stared at the wall.

Binding.

That word meant something specific in pack law. It meant whatever happened at the gathering would be permanent. Recorded. Irreversible.

I got dressed. Walked to the administrative wing. The jasmine scent was stronger now. Renata had moved her things into the office with the lovely light. I could see her through the open door, arranging books on the shelf, humming softly.

I kept walking.

Marcus found me in the council chambers an hour later. He closed the door behind him and stood across the table from me.

"Gregory told me what he's planning," he said.

I looked up from the territorial map I'd been staring at without seeing. "And?"

"He's going to strip Lawson of his title."

The words hung in the air between us. Heavy. Impossible.

"He can't," I said.

Marcus's expression didn't change. "He can. Blood-oath adoption. Ancient pack law. If he declares you his heir in front of the pack under the full moon, it's binding."

I stared at him. "Why would he do that?"

"Because Dara told him everything last night." Marcus's voice was quiet. Steady. "And he's dying, Emiliana. He doesn't have time to fix this slowly. So he's going to fix it the only way he can."

My hands went still on the map. "Is it binding?"

"Yes."

I nodded once. Looked back down at the map. At the territories I'd been managing for seven years. At the alliances I'd built. At the pack I'd held together while everyone pitied me.

"Okay," I said.

Marcus waited. Like he expected me to say more. To react. To show something.

I didn't.

After a long moment, he turned and walked out.

I stayed in the council chambers until the sun set. Until the full moon rose over Ironveil's eastern ridge. Until the summons echoed through every wolf's mind, calling them to the gathering circle.

Then I stood. Smoothed my jacket. Checked my reflection in the window glass.

The woman staring back at me looked calm. Composed. Ready.

I walked toward the gathering circle with my head up. With the bandaged hand at my side. With the hollow space where Sera used to be.

And I wondered if anyone could see that I was about to become someone entirely different.
