Chapter 4

The summons came at nine.

A mind-link from Lawson. Formal. Brief. "My office. Now."

I was already dressed. I'd been awake since dawn, sitting at the desk in my quarters with the alliance documents I'd never finished revising. My hands were steady as I closed the files and stood. I checked my reflection in the small mirror by the door. Hair pulled back. Face composed. The woman I'd trained myself to be for seven years.

I walked through the pack house. Past wolves who wouldn't meet my eyes. Past the administrative wing where Renata's jasmine scent had already settled into the walls. Past the council chambers where I'd presented strategies Lawson claimed as his own.

His office door was closed. I knocked once.

"Come in."

Lawson sat behind his desk. The morning light came through the window behind him, turning him into a silhouette. The Lycan Council award sat on the shelf to his right—the plaque with Ironveil's name engraved in silver, the one that represented seven years of my work.

He gestured to the chair across from him. "Sit."

I sat. Folded my hands in my lap. Waited.

He looked at me for a long moment. His expression was carefully neutral. Prepared. This wasn't spontaneous. He'd rehearsed this.

"Emiliana." My full name again. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "I've been thinking about this for a long time. About us. About what's fair."

I didn't respond. Just held his gaze.

"You've been an exceptional Luna," he continued. His voice was measured. Calm. Like he was delivering a quarterly report. "The pack owes you more than I can put into words. But we both know this bond—" He paused. Looked up and slightly to the left. The tell. "It hasn't been what either of us needed."

My thumb pressed against my wrist under the table. Hard.

"I'm not going to pretend anymore," Lawson said. "Renata and I—what we have is real. It always has been. And keeping you in this position, unmarked, waiting for something that's never going to happen—" He shook his head. "That's not fair to you."

Fair.

The word tasted like ash in my mouth.

"So I'm doing this for you," he said. He actually believed it. I could see it in his eyes. "I'm freeing you. You deserve a second-chance mate. Someone who can give you what I couldn't. Someone who will choose you the way you deserve to be chosen."

Sera stirred. For the first time in days, I felt her. Not awake. Not strong. Just a faint, distant tremor. Like something breaking deep underground.

Lawson stood. Came around the desk. Stopped in front of me.

I didn't stand. I looked up at him from the chair and waited.

His jaw tightened. He took a breath.

"I, Lawson Black, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, reject you, Emiliana Graham, as my mate."

The words hit first. Then the pain.

It started in my chest—a sharp, tearing sensation like something vital being ripped out by the roots. Then it spread. Through my ribs. Down my spine. Into my bones. The bond I'd carried for seven years, incomplete and aching, finally snapping.

I couldn't breathe. My vision blurred at the edges. Every nerve in my body screamed.

I didn't make a sound.

Lawson's face flickered. Concern? Regret? I couldn't tell through the pain. But he didn't move toward me. Didn't reach out. Just stood there, waiting.

I forced air into my lungs. Forced my hands to unclench. Forced myself to look him in the eye.

"I, Emiliana Graham," I said. My voice came out steady. Clear. "Accept your rejection."

The pain doubled. Tripled. My bones felt like they were splintering from the inside. Sera howled—a sound so loud and broken it filled every corner of my skull. Then she went silent. Completely silent. The space where she'd been went cold and empty.

I stood.

Lawson took a step back. His eyes widened slightly. Whatever he'd expected, it wasn't this.

I turned. Walked to the shelf. Picked up the Lycan Council award plaque. It was heavier than I expected. Solid. The silver gleamed in the morning light.

I looked at it. At the engraved words. *Ironveil Pack. Strongest on the Continent.*

I built that.

I turned and threw it against the wall.

The sound was enormous. Glass shattered. The wooden frame splintered. Shards scattered across the floor, glittering like ice. Blood welled up on my palm where a piece had cut me. I didn't feel it.

Lawson stared at the wreckage. Then at me.

I walked past him. Opened the door. Stepped into the hallway.

The wolves in the corridor froze. I felt their eyes on me. On my straight back. On the blood dripping from my hand onto the floor.

I didn't run. I didn't hide my face. I walked through the pack house with my head up, leaving a trail of red drops behind me.

The silence followed me like a living thing. Not pity this time. Something else. Something I didn't have a name for yet.

I walked out the eastern gate. Into the forest. Into the cold.

Behind me, in his office, Lawson stood alone with the shattered plaque at his feet. And on my order—or rather, on the order I knew he wouldn't give—those shards would stay there.

A monument to the only real thing he'd ever done for me.

He'd set me free.
