Chapter 3

I needed air.

The pack house felt smaller every hour. The scent of jasmine and amber had seeped into the hallways, the council chambers, even the administrative wing where I used to work alone. I grabbed my jacket and walked out through the eastern gate before anyone could ask where I was going.

The forest was cold. Late autumn had stripped most of the leaves, and the ground crunched under my boots. I followed the old patrol path toward the ridge where the territory opened into a clearing. I used to run this route with Sera every week. Back when she still answered me.

I reached for her now. The way I'd been reaching for seven years. The way you reach for a light switch in a dark room, your hand already knowing where it should be.

Nothing.

Just that hollow, silent space where my wolf used to live.

I kept walking. The trees thinned ahead. I could see the clearing through the gaps—open ground, pale grass, the kind of space wolves liked for running.

Then I heard them.

The sound came first. Paws on earth. The low, playful growl of a young wolf. Laughter—if wolves could laugh, that's what it sounded like.

I stopped at the tree line.

Three wolves moved through the clearing. Lawson's wolf was unmistakable—massive, dark-furred, his Alpha aura radiating even at a distance. Renata's wolf ran beside him, smaller, her coat a warm auburn that caught the light. She pressed against his side as they ran, affectionate, easy. Natural.

And between them, bounding with the uncoordinated energy of a pup still growing into his legs, was Bodie.

He yipped and tumbled, rolling through the grass. Renata's wolf circled back and nuzzled him upright. Lawson's wolf lowered his head and let Bodie climb onto his back, tiny claws scrabbling for purchase.

They looked perfect.

The Alpha. His mate. Their son.

I stood in the shadows of the tree line and watched them disappear around the forest bend. My hands were cold. I shoved them into my jacket pockets and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. The habit I couldn't break. The spot where a mate's scent was supposed to settle.

It was empty.

I turned and walked back the way I'd come. My boots found the path automatically. I didn't think about where I was going. I just moved.

When I looked up, I was standing outside my office.

Not my office anymore. Renata's office now. The one with the lovely light.

I kept walking. Past the administrative wing. Past the council chambers. I climbed the stairs to the records room on the third floor—the place no one ever went unless they needed historical pack documents. I unlocked the door and sat at the dusty desk in the corner.

Territorial alliance documents. I'd been working on them for weeks. Nighthollow Pack, Ashwood Pack, two smaller territories to the south. Ironveil's strength depended on these relationships. Lawson would present them at the next council summit. He'd smile and shake hands and accept congratulations.

I opened the files and started reading.

The words blurred together. I read the same paragraph three times. My hand moved across the page, making notes I'd probably have to redo tomorrow.

The sun set outside the narrow window. I didn't turn on the light. I just kept working in the growing dark, my pen scratching across paper, filling the silence with something that wasn't the sound of my own thoughts.

Footsteps on the stairs.

I didn't look up. The door opened. Beta Marcus stood in the doorway, his silhouette backlit by the hallway lamp.

He didn't say anything at first. Just stood there. I could feel his gaze on me—steady, assessing, the way he looked at problems that needed solving.

"Emiliana," he said finally.

I kept my eyes on the documents. "The Nighthollow terms need revision. I'll have them ready by morning."

"Stop."

My pen stilled.

Marcus stepped into the room. He didn't sit. He stood across the desk from me, his hands loose at his sides, his expression carved from stone.

"The entire pack pities you, Emiliana."

The words landed like a physical blow. I looked up.

His face was hard. Not cruel. Just honest in the way only Marcus could be honest—blunt because blunt was the only thing that would cut through.

"Every wolf in this territory knows what he's done," he continued. His voice was low, controlled. A field medic delivering a diagnosis. "They've known for years. And they watched you pretend it wasn't happening, and they let you, because your pretending kept the pack running."

My hands went still on the maps. The pen rolled across the desk and fell to the floor.

I couldn't breathe.

Pity.

They pitied me.

Not respect. Not loyalty. Pity.

I'd thought—I'd told myself—that if I kept my head up, if I kept working, if I kept the pack strong, then at least I had my dignity. At least I had that.

But I didn't.

I never did.

I was the woman everyone watched suffer in silence. The woman everyone felt sorry for. The unmarked Luna who kept pretending her mate would choose her eventually, while the entire pack whispered behind her back.

Marcus's voice softened, just slightly. "You deserved better than what he gave you."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Hard enough to hurt.

"The Nighthollow terms," I said. My voice sounded strange. Distant. "I'll have them ready."

Marcus stared at me for a long moment. Then he turned and walked out.

The door closed.

I sat in the dark records room with the alliance documents spread across the desk. With the pen on the floor. With the hollow space where Sera used to be.

And I finally understood.

Devotion wasn't currency. It was a loan I'd been making to someone who never intended to pay me back.

And the interest had just come due.
