Chapter 2

Three days after the rejection, I woke to the smell of cedar and iron in my pillowcase.

Not mine. Cali's.

I lay still and breathed it in. She had been in my room. Not just in it—she had touched everything. The pillow. The blanket. The edge of the dresser. The doorframe. She had moved through this space the way wolves mark territory, deliberate and thorough, erasing me one surface at a time.

I sat up slowly. My neck still ached where the mark had cracked. Three days, and the wound hadn't closed. Silver crusted at the edges. I touched it once, lightly, and my wolf stirred behind the wall I kept her behind. She wanted out. She wanted blood.

Not yet, I told her.

I dressed in grey—soft, formless, the kind of thing a broken Luna would wear. I braided my hair back and kept my eyes down when I passed pack members in the hall. They didn't speak to me. Most of them looked away. A few sneered. I cataloged every face.

Cali's scent was everywhere. The Luna suite. The corridor outside the archives. The entrance to the healer lodge. She had done this in one morning, moving fast and aggressive, claiming every space I used to walk through without thinking.

But she had been careless.

I followed her trail with my nose and my memory, and underneath the cedar and iron, I smelled something else. Faint. Chemical. Bitter at the edges.

Wolfsbane.

Not the raw kind that grows wild near the border. Refined. Processed. The kind you only get from someone who knows how to extract it without burning their hands. The kind that shows up in trafficking ledgers under false names.

She had touched wolfsbane recently. Within hours. And then she had touched every surface in the pack house that used to be mine.

I filed it away.

That evening, the communal meal was held in the main hall. I walked in last, the way I had been doing since the rejection. The hall went quiet when I entered. Not the respectful quiet of a Luna's arrival. The watching quiet of a pack that smells weakness.

Cali stood near the head table, her arm looped through Kian's. She saw me and smiled. It was not a kind smile.

"Anastasia," she said, loud enough for the room to hear. "Your seat is ready."

She gestured to the far end of the hall. The servants' table. The Omegas' table. The place where wolves without rank ate in silence while the rest of the pack ignored them.

I looked at the table. Then I looked at Cali. Then I walked to the servants' table and sat down.

The hall exhaled. A few wolves laughed. Not loud. Just enough.

I kept my head down and ate slowly. The food was cold. The Omega beside me didn't make eye contact. Across the room, I heard Cali laugh at something Kian said, bright and performative.

And while I ate, I memorized.

Every wolf who laughed. Every wolf who looked away. Every wolf who watched me with something that wasn't quite pity and wasn't quite contempt. I stored their faces the way I stored supply weights and patrol schedules and the faint chemical smell on Cali's hands.

One week later, the Winter Solstice Banquet filled the hall with firelight and noise. It was the first major gathering since the rejection. The pack dressed well. The tables were set with ceremonial plates. Cali wore red.

My name card sat at the Omega table again.

I stood at the entrance and looked at it. Then I looked at the head table, where Cali sat beside Kian in the seat I used to occupy. She was watching me. Waiting.

I walked to my seat. I did not hurry. The hall went quiet again, the way it always did now when I moved through it.

Cali stood. Her voice carried.

"Residents without rank will serve the lower tables tonight," she announced. "It's tradition."

It was not tradition. But no one corrected her.

I looked at the Omega table. At the cold plates. At the wolves who would not meet my eyes.

Then I turned and walked to the head table.

Cali's smile froze.

I reached into the pocket of my grey dress and pulled out a small silver bracelet. Delicate. Woven. The kind a Luna gifts to her successor as a gesture of goodwill during the transition period. It was tradition. Real tradition. The kind written into the Accord.

I held it out.

"For you," I said softly. My voice trembled just enough. "A departing Luna's gift."

Cali stared at the bracelet. Then at me. The hall was silent.

Silver is harmless to a true Luna. The fated bond offers protection against its burn. But Cali's bond with Kian was chosen, not fated. Incomplete. And she knew it.

She did not take the bracelet.

"I don't accept tokens from disgraced wolves," she said. Her voice was sharp. Too sharp.

I let my hand drop. I let my eyes fill. I turned and walked back to the Omega table, and this time, my shoulders shook.

Behind me, I heard the murmur start. Low. Uncertain. The pack elders at the side tables leaning toward each other, whispering.

Why wouldn't the new Luna accept silver?

I sat down at the Omega table and ate in silence. My hands did not shake. My wolf did not stir. I had given them exactly what I needed to give them—a question they could not ignore and a performance they would remember.

That night, Kian summoned me to the Alpha study.

I walked slowly. The study door was open. He stood behind the desk, his arms crossed. Cali was not with him.

"You need to stop," he said.

I looked at the floor. "Stop what, Alpha?"

"Creating scenes. Making trouble." His voice hardened. The Alpha tone bled into it, low and commanding. "You will not embarrass Cali again. Do you understand?"

The tone hit me like a hand on my chest. My knees wanted to buckle. My throat wanted to close. But the bond was gone. The anchor was gone. The command slid against my ribs and did not lock.

I stayed standing.

Kian's eyes narrowed. Just slightly. He had felt it too. The gap. The weakness.

"I understand," I whispered. I let my voice break. I bowed my head. "I'm sorry."

He watched me for a long moment. Then he gestured to the door.

I left.

In the corridor, I pressed my hand to the wall and breathed slowly. My heart was pounding. My wolf was clawing. But my mind was clear.

Kian's Alpha tone had failed. Not completely. But enough.

He knew it. And now I knew he knew it.

I walked back to my room and closed the door. I sat on the bed and touched the cracked mark on my neck. It was still cold. Still empty.

But for the first time since the rejection, I smiled.
