Chapter 4

The nightmare started the same way it always did.

Calvin's voice echoing through the great hall. The cold spreading through my chest. Natasha's red dress. The hollow space where the bond used to be.

But this time, something was different.

This time, when the mark went cold, I felt something else. A pull. Not from the shattered bond—that was gone, severed clean—but from somewhere else entirely. Somewhere close.

I tried to wake up. Couldn't. The dream held me under like water.

Then the pull intensified. Heat flooded through the hollow space in my chest, filling it with something that wasn't mine. Wasn't Calvin's. Was—

The mind-link snapped open.

I wasn't in the great hall anymore. I was standing in a pavilion I'd never seen before, sunlight streaming through open sides, the scent of summer grass and ceremonial wine thick in the air. A Come of Age Ceremony. Years ago. I could feel it—the weight of memory, the specific quality of a moment that mattered.

And I could feel him.

Desmond stood across the pavilion, his entire body locked in place. His wolf—massive, black, ancient—was howling inside him with a recognition so visceral it made my knees weak even though this wasn't my memory, wasn't my body.

Mate.

The word echoed through the link like a bell. Not spoken. Felt. A biological certainty that bypassed thought entirely.

He started moving toward me—toward the version of me in this memory, younger, unaware, standing near the eastern edge of the gathering.

Then Calvin stepped into his path.

I felt Desmond's wolf slam against the cage of his restraint. Felt the political calculation override instinct—he couldn't challenge a sitting Alpha without cause, not here, not in front of the regional Council. Felt him try to move around Calvin, try to catch my eye, try to—

Calvin said something. I couldn't hear the words through the memory, but I felt their effect. Felt Desmond's hands curl into fists. Felt him watch as Calvin steered me away from the pavilion entirely, out of sight, out of reach.

Felt the bond—new, fragile, just beginning to form—go silent.

The memory shifted. Seven years compressed into flashes. Desmond standing in empty rooms. Staring at reports that mentioned Shadowridge. The phantom ache in his chest growing sharper, not duller, with time. His wolf pacing, relentless, waiting for a scent that never came back.

Him heating broth at 2 AM because he could feel, through some thin thread of the incomplete bond, that I was awake and hurting.

Him standing in the audience chamber the night I invoked sanctuary, every muscle locked down, because touching me—claiming me—speaking the bond aloud—would be taking the choice Calvin had already stolen.

Seven years of disciplined, agonizing patience.

Seven years of waiting for me to be free.

I wrenched the mind-link shut.

The pavilion vanished. I was back in my quarters, tangled in sheets, my heart slamming against my ribs. My hands were shaking. My wolf—silent for days—stirred once, a flicker of heat and confusion deep in my chest.

I lay there until the shaking stopped.

Until my breathing evened out.

Until I could think.

Calvin had lied.

Desmond wasn't a dangerous political rival. He was my fated mate. Seven years ago, I could have been free. Seven years ago, the bond could have formed properly, naturally, the way the Moon Goddess intended.

And Calvin had stepped between us and stolen it.

I sat up slowly. My wrist throbbed—the silver brand pulsing in time with my heartbeat. I looked at it. At Natasha's deliberate cruelty made permanent.

I'd thought the rejection was the betrayal.

But the rejection was just the end.

The betrayal had started seven years ago, in a pavilion I didn't remember, with a bond I'd never been allowed to feel.

I didn't cry. I was past crying.

I got out of bed and retrieved the Lycan Accord texts I'd carried from Shadowridge. Spread them across the small desk near the window. Started reading by the pale pre-dawn light.

I'd memorized these documents over years of reading pack records alone at night, thinking maybe if I understood the system, I could survive it.

I hadn't known they would become the instrument of Calvin's destruction.

But I knew now.

---

The next three days passed in a strange, suspended clarity.

I trained with Rowe. My wolf still wouldn't surface, but my body was getting stronger. Faster. I could hold a defensive stance longer. Could take a hit and stay on my feet.

I ate the broth that appeared outside my door at 2 AM. Didn't ask who left it. Didn't need to.

I avoided the corridors where I might run into Desmond. Not because I was angry. Because I didn't know what I'd say. What I'd feel. The mind-link had shown me everything he'd been holding back, and I didn't have a framework for it yet.

I studied the Accord texts. Found the clause I needed. Article Twelve, Provision Seven. The Luna Accord—the right of any rejected Luna-blooded she-wolf to demand a formal accounting before the Lycan Council.

It was old law. Rarely invoked. But it was there.

And I was going to use it.

---

Meanwhile, in Shadowridge, things were falling apart.

I heard about it through Marcus, who heard it from border scouts, who heard it from traveling rogues passing through neutral territory.

Calvin's wolves were weakening. Shifts were sluggish. Stamina was dropping. Auras that used to dominate were thinning to nothing.

He'd brought in outside healers. Found nothing wrong.

He'd instituted new training regimens. No improvement.

Natasha, installed as Luna barely three weeks, was demanding explanations he couldn't provide.

And packs that used to avoid Shadowridge's borders were testing them now. Probing. Seeing how far they could push.

I listened to Marcus's report and felt nothing.

No satisfaction. No vindication. Just cold, factual recognition.

Without my aura flowing through the bond, Calvin's manufactured dominance was collapsing.

He'd built an empire on stolen power.

And now the foundation was gone.

---

On the ninth night, I didn't wait for the nightmare.

I sat at the desk with the Accord texts and a single candle and began drafting the petition.

The language had to be precise. Formal. Unassailable.

I wrote until my hand cramped. Until the candle burned low. Until the words were exactly right.

When I was done, I read it through once more.

Then I folded it carefully and set it aside.

Tomorrow, I would present it to Marcus. He would take it to Desmond. Desmond would take it to the Lycan Council.

And Calvin would have to answer.

I blew out the candle and lay down in the dark.

My wolf stirred again. Stronger this time. A low rumble of heat that felt like anticipation.

I closed my eyes.

Seven years ago, Calvin had stolen my fated bond before it could form.

But he hadn't destroyed it.

And he was about to learn the difference.
