Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, and I felt it like a silver blade sliding between my ribs.

I was standing at the very back of the great hall—where I always stood during pack events—pressed against the stone wall with the other nameless wolves. The Summit had been going on for hours. Twelve territorial Alphas filled the hall with their voices, their laughter, their thunder of approval as Calvin ascended the dais to accept honors for Shadowridge's dominance. I watched him move through the crowd like he owned the air itself. Maybe he did. Everyone said so.

The hall smelled like sweat and power and the particular musk that comes off dominant wolves when they're posturing for each other. I'd learned to breathe through my mouth at these things.

Calvin reached the dais. The Lycan Council's arbiter handed him a ceremonial plaque—some kind of recognition for territorial strength, for leadership, for being the Alpha everyone else measured themselves against. He accepted it with that easy smile he wore in public, the one that made people forget he could rip your throat out if you looked at him wrong.

Then he turned to face the crowd.

"I want to thank the Council for this honor," he said. His voice carried across the hall without effort. "Shadowridge has become what it is because of discipline. Vision. And the strength to make hard choices."

The Alphas nodded. A few murmured agreement.

Calvin's gaze swept the room. It didn't land on me. It never did.

"Which brings me to an announcement," he continued. "One I've been considering for some time."

Something in his tone made the hall go quiet. Not the comfortable quiet of people waiting to applaud—the tight, anticipatory quiet of people sensing blood in the water.

"I, Calvin Scott, Alpha of the Shadowridge Pack, reject—"

The words hit me before I understood them.

"—Hope Ellis, as my mate and bond-partner."

The mark on my collarbone went cold. Not painful. Just cold, like someone had pressed ice directly against the bone. Then it went hollow. Empty. A space where something had been and now wasn't.

I couldn't breathe.

"I claim instead Natasha Bell, daughter of Alpha Gregor Bell of the Silverpeak Pack, as my chosen mate."

The hall erupted. Not in shock—in approval. Congratulations. The Silverpeak alliance was a good move, politically. Everyone knew it.

My legs stopped working. I hit the stone floor hard, my knees cracking against the ground. The wolves near me stepped back, giving me space the way you'd give space to something contagious.

Natasha ascended the dais. I saw her through the forest of legs and bodies between us. She wore red. She was smiling. When she reached Calvin's side, she looked down—directly at me, crumpled on the floor—and her smile sharpened into something that looked like satisfaction.

The cold in my chest spread. My wolf, silent for eight years, stirred once. Just once. A tremor deep inside, something ancient and furious trying to claw its way up my throat. It felt like heat and rage and a sound I didn't have a name for.

Then it died.

I pressed my palm flat against the stone floor. The scar on my wrist—Natasha's gift from earlier this week, a heated silver coin pressed into my skin while Calvin watched—throbbed once in recognition.

I forced myself upright.

No one was looking at me anymore. The Alphas were congratulating Calvin. Natasha was accepting well-wishes. The ceremony was moving on.

I turned and walked out of the hall. My legs shook, but they carried me. I didn't run. I didn't cry. I walked.

Behind me, someone laughed.

I made it to the corridor before my wolf tried again. Another tremor, deeper this time, rattling through my chest like something trying to break out of a cage. My vision blurred at the edges. For a second—just a second—I smelled something that wasn't Shadowridge. Something wild and cold and far away.

Then it was gone.

I leaned against the wall and counted my breaths. One. Two. Three.

Eight years. I'd given him eight years.

I knew where the pack records were kept. I knew which documents would prove an unmarked bond existed, even if Calvin had never formalized it. I'd read them late at night when I couldn't sleep, memorizing the language, the legal phrases, the loopholes.

I also knew where the Lycan Accord texts were stored.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor. I straightened and kept walking.

The bond was gone. The mark was hollow. But I wasn't.

Not yet.
