Chapter 4

The wolf arrived at Declan's border three days after I sent the petition.

I was in the safehouse study, cross-referencing wolfsbane shipment logs against Ironveil's official inventory reports, when Declan knocked once and stepped inside. His expression told me everything before he spoke.

"Maverick sent someone," he said quietly. "At the border. Says he has a message for you."

I set down my pen. "What kind of message."

"The kind he wants delivered in person." Declan's tone was careful. "Your call. I can send him back."

I looked at the evidence files spread across the desk. Six weeks of work. Every discrepancy documented, every transaction traced. The petition had been filed four days ago. The Council's intake office had confirmed receipt.

Maverick knew.

"Let him in," I said.

Declan hesitated. "Lily—"

"I want to hear it."

He studied my face for a long moment, then nodded and left.

I stayed at the desk. Didn't stand. Didn't move the files. When the wolf entered—a mid-ranking Delta I recognized from border patrols—I kept my hands flat on the surface and waited.

He stopped three feet from the desk and dipped his head. Not a full bow. Respectful enough to avoid insult, shallow enough to remind me I wasn't Luna anymore.

"Ma'am." His voice was neutral. "Alpha Maverick sends his regards. He's concerned about your wellbeing."

I said nothing.

The Delta shifted his weight. "He wants you to know that he recognizes the pup's death was a tragedy. That you suffered a loss no she-wolf should endure." The words came out rehearsed, careful. "He's prepared to offer a settlement. Financial support. Comfortable placement in a neutral pack, Omega rank with full protections. No hostility. No judgment."

I watched him. His gaze stayed steady, professional.

"In exchange," he continued, "he asks that you withdraw the tribunal petition. For the sake of pack stability. For your own peace."

The room went quiet.

I looked down at the files on the desk. The wolfsbane logs. The silver weapon transfers. The hunting rights sold to rogue bands. Six weeks of evidence that proved Maverick had been systematically disarming his own pack to fund Carly's family.

I looked back at the Delta.

"Tell Alpha Maverick," I said quietly, "that I received his message."

The Delta waited. When I didn't continue, his brow furrowed slightly. "Is there a response, ma'am?"

"That was the response."

He blinked. "I don't—"

"I received it." I kept my voice even. "That's all he needs to know."

The Delta's jaw tightened. He wasn't stupid. He understood what I wasn't saying. After a long pause, he dipped his head again—shallower this time—and left.

Declan returned five minutes later. He didn't ask what happened. He just set a mug of tea on the desk beside the files and went back to his own work at the far table.

I picked up my pen and returned to the shipment logs.

Barnaby, curled at my feet, shifted closer and rested his head on my boot.

The Council's confirmation letter arrived two days later.

Declan brought it to the study at dawn, the official seal still intact. I opened it standing at the desk, Barnaby at my side, and read the single page twice.

The tribunal petition had passed intake review. The hearing was scheduled for three weeks out. Five territorial Alphas would attend. The Lycan King himself would adjudicate.

At the bottom, in smaller text: *Counter-motion filed by Victoria Green, former Luna of Ironveil Pack, citing lack of legal standing. Motion reviewed and overruled. Tribunal will proceed as scheduled.*

I set the letter down carefully.

Declan watched me from the doorway. "Victoria tried to block it."

"I know."

"The Council overruled her."

"I know."

He crossed the room and stood beside the desk, looking at the letter. "This is real now, Lily. Once you walk into that tribunal hall, there's no taking it back."

I met his gaze. "I don't want to take it back."

He nodded slowly. "Then we keep building the case."

I picked up the letter and placed it in the evidence file. The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Victoria's fury reached Ironveil before she did.

I didn't witness it myself—Declan's border scouts reported it later—but the account was vivid enough. She'd returned to the pack house at midday, her car pulling up to the main entrance with enough speed to scatter gravel. She'd gone straight to the Alpha suite.

Maverick had been inside with Carly.

The scouts couldn't hear the conversation through the closed doors, but they heard Victoria's voice rising, sharp and imperious. Heard something heavy hit the floor. Heard Maverick's response—lower, strained.

When Victoria finally left, she slammed the suite door hard enough that pack members three corridors away felt it.

Declan's scout, positioned at the tree line, reported one more detail.

Maverick had stepped onto the suite's balcony an hour later. Alone. He'd gripped the railing with both hands, his shoulders hunched, his head down. And his aura—the dominant Alpha presence that usually radiated from him like heat—had flickered.

Not gone. Not collapsed. But visibly thinner. Unstable.

The scout said it looked like a candle struggling in wind.

I listened to Declan's report in the safehouse study, my hands still on the evidence files.

"The rejection's killing his wolf," Declan said quietly. "Slowly. But it's happening."

I said nothing.

He watched me for a long moment. "Does that bother you."

I looked down at the files. At the proof of every betrayal, every stolen resource, every lie Maverick had built his new life on.

"No," I said finally.

Declan nodded and left me to my work.

I opened the next file and kept reading.

Three weeks until the tribunal. Three weeks to make sure every piece of evidence was airtight, every transaction documented, every witness statement verified.

Three weeks until I walked into that hall and made Maverick answer for what he'd done.

I picked up my pen.

Barnaby shifted at my feet, his warmth steady against my leg.

Outside, the sun set over Declan's territory, and somewhere in Ironveil, Maverick's wolf flickered in the dark.
