The mediation room smelled like old wood and anxiety.

I arrived alone. Declan had offered to accompany me, but I'd refused. This wasn't his fight. I carried my evidence case in one hand, Barnaby's leash in the other—the Council had permitted companion animals for witnesses under duress, and I'd filed the paperwork without shame.

Maverick was already seated when I entered. Victoria sat beside him, her posture rigid, her gaze fixed on me with the kind of contempt that had once made me flinch. Two pack warriors stood behind them, arms crossed. The mediator, a gray-haired Beta from a neutral pack, gestured to the chair across the table.

I sat. Barnaby settled at my feet, his body warm against my leg.

The mediator opened a folder. "This session is mandatory under Council procedure. Both parties are encouraged to reach a resolution before the formal tribunal. Alpha Maverick, you may begin."

Maverick leaned forward. His hands were flat on the table, his expression carefully composed. He'd prepared for this. I could see it in the way he held himself—shoulders back, chin level, the posture of a reasonable man making a reasonable offer.

"Lily." His voice was soft. Almost kind. "I know you're hurting. I know the pup's loss was—" He paused, his jaw tightening briefly. "Devastating. For both of us."

I said nothing.

He continued. "But this tribunal will destroy the pack. Not just me. Everyone. The instability, the resource investigations, the Council's scrutiny—it will cripple Ironveil for years. And for what? Revenge?"

Victoria's gaze stayed locked on my face.

"I'm offering you a way out," Maverick said. "A generous settlement. Financial security. Safe placement. You can rebuild your life somewhere peaceful. Somewhere you won't have to carry this weight anymore."

I looked at him. At the man who had severed our mind-link while I hemorrhaged. Who had spoken the rejection vow in front of the entire pack while I lost our pup on the floor.

"No," I said quietly.

His composure cracked. Just a flicker. "Lily—"

"I'm not withdrawing the petition."

Victoria's hand moved to Maverick's arm, but he shook her off. He stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. The warriors behind him shifted, their bodies tensing.

The mediator raised a hand. "Alpha Maverick, please—"

Maverick's gaze locked on mine. His aura flared—dominant, overwhelming, the full weight of an Alpha's presence flooding the room. The warriors straightened. Victoria went still. Even the mediator flinched.

And then Maverick spoke, his voice dropping into the tone I knew too well. The one that had commanded my silence in the Alpha suite. The one that had made my body obey before my mind could protest.

"Lily." The Alpha tone wrapped around my name like a hand closing over my throat. "You will withdraw the petition. Now."

The command hit my chest. I felt it—the pressure, the weight, the biological imperative to submit. My wolf had always been silent. The Alpha tone had always landed.

For half a second, my body prepared to obey.

And then something beneath the silence absorbed the impact.

The pressure didn't dissipate. It simply stopped mattering. Like a hand pressing against stone instead of flesh. The command sat in the air between us, fully formed and completely powerless.

I held Maverick's gaze.

His eyes widened. I watched the realization move across his face—confusion first, then disbelief, then something close to fear.

He'd felt it. The absence of the flinch he had always produced.

"Lily." His voice cracked slightly. He tried again, the Alpha tone harder this time, desperate. "Withdraw the petition."

Nothing.

Victoria stood slowly, her hand on Maverick's arm now, her grip tight. "Maverick—"

He jerked away from her. His aura flickered—not collapsed, but visibly unstable, like a flame struggling in wind. The warriors exchanged glances.

I stood. Picked up my evidence case. Looked at the mediator.

"I have nothing further to discuss outside the formal tribunal," I said.

The mediator nodded, his face carefully blank. "Noted. The session is concluded."

I walked to the door. Barnaby moved with me, his body pressed against my leg. Behind me, I heard Victoria's low, furious whisper and Maverick's silence.

I didn't look back.

That night, I sat on the floor of Declan's safehouse with Barnaby's head in my lap.

The room was quiet. No pack sounds, no footsteps in distant corridors, no voices drifting through walls. Just the soft rhythm of Barnaby's breathing and the weight of his warmth against my legs.

I pressed my hand to my abdomen. The scar tissue had healed. The cramping was gone. But the emptiness felt worse than the pain.

Five months.

I'd felt the pup kick. Small flutters at first, then stronger. I'd lain awake at night with my hand on my belly, counting the movements, memorizing the rhythm. I'd imagined tiny fingers, a small face, eyes that might have looked like mine or Maverick's or something entirely new.

I'd imagined holding them.

The grief rose in my chest—not sharp, not sudden, but vast and quiet and so heavy I couldn't breathe around it. I didn't cry. I sat with Barnaby's head in my lap and let the feeling fill the room until it was the only thing that existed.

I didn't know how long I stayed there. Long enough for my legs to go numb. Long enough for the grief to recede just enough that I could move again.

I stood slowly. Barnaby followed me to the bedroom. I lay down on top of the covers, fully dressed, and stared at the ceiling.

Something beneath my silence was growing. I didn't have language for it yet. But I felt it—steady, patient, ancient. Waiting.

I closed my eyes and organized evidence in my mind until dawn.

The notification arrived three days later.

Declan brought it to the study at midday, the Council seal intact. I opened it standing at the desk.

The tribunal date had been set.

I read the line twice, my hands steady on the paper.

The anniversary of my Mate Ceremony with Maverick. The date he'd repurposed for a bonding feast with Carly.

I set the notification down carefully.

Declan watched me from the doorway. "That's deliberate."

"I know."

"The Council doesn't schedule by coincidence."

"I know." I looked at him. "Confirm my attendance."

He nodded slowly. "Anything else?"

I picked up my pen. "Maren. Ironveil's healer. She needs a formal summons for medical testimony."

Declan's brow furrowed. "Have you spoken to her?"

"No."

"Will she cooperate?"

I thought of Maren's hands on the bloodied bandages. Her voice, quiet and precise: *The biological shock of a severed mate bond during active labor is always catastrophic.*

"She already knows what she saw," I said.

Declan studied my face for a long moment, then left to draft the request.

I returned to the evidence files. Three weeks until the tribunal. Three weeks until I walked into that hall on the anniversary of the bond Maverick had destroyed.

I picked up the next file.

Barnaby shifted at my feet, his warmth steady.

Outside, the sun moved across Declan's territory, and somewhere in Ironveil, Maverick's wolf flickered in the dark.

And deep beneath my silence, something ancient stirred—patient, waiting, ready to erupt.
